I don't know about you guys, but I was absolutely excited hearing them talk about UMD on The Sports Fix this afternoon.

With all of the mayhem known as The Blizzards and Deadskins, I feel like we should be embracing ourselves for the two teams already locked for tournament elibility ;)... we hope so for sure.

Let's get it rolling.

Haha no worries, just giving you a hard time. By the way Mason would wipe the floor with the Terps. Actually my Patriots just barely lost to Georgetown (by 1 point) in a recent closed scrimmage.

I approve this thread.

You're trippin if you think Maryland is a bad team. We got a good squad this year, and two solid forward recruits in James Padgett and Jordan Williams. With Vasquez coming back and Mosley due to only improve. Hayes and Milbourne are seniors. Bowie, Tucker, Gregory, Choi, Goins....Terps are going to be a contender in the ACC and a tournament team for sure.

Hoyas are eager to erase the sour taste from their mouth from last year. Greg Monroe coming back makes us infinitely better. And I think Chris Wright has the talent to be one of the best PGs in the nation. Watch out for Hollis Thompson. He could possibly be the freshman of the year in the Big East.

Let's go Terps and Hoyas!

I have no idea. It was a closed scrimmage, so I didn't actually get to see it. From what I hear though, it was a very competitive game. I imagine in this sort of scrimmage the coaches would coordinate who they were putting in so they could practice matching up against good competition.

I personally like this thread and am going to bump it. I love both Maryland and Georgetown basketball and think they deserve their own thread in the Tailgate like all the other local sports teams. Both squads are playing very well right now.

The Hoyas are ranked #14 in the nation and every starter is excelling. If you don't know who Chris Wright is you better learn the name, he is becoming a top 5 PG in the nation. Greg Monroe is a big man with finesse. Austin Freeman, Julian Vaughn, Jason Clark...ballers. Not a very deep team, JTIII typically only plays 7 players, but very talented. Big game on Monday at Syracuse that everyone should watch.

Maryland is 3-1 in the ACC and would be 4-0 if Wake doesn't hit a very tough shot at the end of that game. Vasquez is playing smart and everyone is contributing. Mosley, Milbourne, Tucker, Hayes...all finding their niche and shooting well. Jordan Williams has played extremely well for a freshman and is second in the nation in freshman rebounding. Dino Gregory has returned from suspension and is contributing. Looking like a team that will compete in the ACC.

I post there a lot too, in both the Hoyas and Terps threads, but it would be nice to have a thread in here for both programs when there are big games and stuff. Same as the Caps and Wizards, there are seperate forums for them but threads in here. I'll make sure to keep it alive.

Yep, Hoyas and Terps for me.

Both have been looking good this year. I don't get all the games out here, but there's been a fair share of them on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU, especially the Hoyas. The Terps had a few hiccups early on, but it seems they're hitting their stride. Lost a close on the other night in OT, and looked solid tonight against NC State.

Georgetown has been playing up to their talent level and have been consistent. That comeback against UConn was real nice and they almost did it again against Villanova. Hopefully they can pull off the win agains Syracuse Monday night and I think they actually play Duke in the next week or two, man I hope they punish them! Personally I think they're underrated, but maybe that's just me being bias.

I grew up watching both teams as well. I use to say I was going to be the first white boy to play under John Thompson. I don't see why people would have a problem with people cheering for both teams, they are far from being rivals.

Maryland is in a great position to be seeded in the tourney, I am thinking a 9/10 seed for them.

Georgetown is in a great position and it appears Syracuse and their bench are going to be their biggest obstacle. I wouldn't be suprised if they win the Big East.

The Pats losing by one to the Hoyas on a closed scrimmage might be the funniest post of this thread.

Terps are playing solid ball right now. They looked so sloppy early on this season but have turned on the heat and are bringing it every night.

Just to echo what others said, I never found any problems cheering for both teams. They both represent the area(DC and MD) which I both love. I am from Chevy Chase, which is right on the district line, so I have an affinity for both the city and the state. They aren't bitter rivals or anything.

Some people are worried that th Hoyas might get tired by only playing 7 players regularly. I don't think that will be an issue, these are young athletes we are talking about. Also, I absolutely love the way Julian Vaughn has been playing. I'm so glad he transfered from FSU, he provides a key big body down low and he has some great energy/moves. Him and Monroe make up a good starting front line.

Sean Mosley(sophomore) and Jordan Williams(freshman) are both going to be special players for Maryland, they already have good games. James Padgett(freshman) is also going to be good, he just isn't getting a lot of playing time now with Gregory back. I like how Vasquez is being less selfish this year and trying to get everyone involved. As much as people bashed Gary Williams the past couple years(which I thought was kinda crazy despite some of it being warranted), he has this team playing very hard. And he has recruited well, with a very solid class coming in next year too.

There's no problem cheering for both, especially when Gary is reluctant to schedule Georgetown and they rarely play against each other unless it's a tournament game.

It's all about DC Pride. Pride of the great teams around this area. And I know I might get some **** from "Guy who thinks it's stupid to pull for an entire conference instead of a team" but this area has some good teams and I'm proud to support all of them, even the obscure ones such as George Mason ;)

What facts straight? Maryland and Georgetown played last year if I remember correctly in one of those regular season tournaments.

Maryland doesn't schedule Georgetown regularly too. I think they played in the NCAA tournament way back in 2000 or 2001 or something, but someone may need to check facts on that. One thing is certain though, Maryland and Georgetown don't play a lot, at least lately.

The Carrier Dome is always a tough place to visit, and that’s especially been the case for Georgetown in recent years.

The 12th-ranked Hoyas look to end their five-game slide in the dome Monday night when they meet No. 5 Syracuse, which is seeking a seventh straight win.

Syracuse (19-1, 6-1 Big East) has won 10 of the last 11 home meetings with Georgetown (15-3, 6-2). The Orange’s 98-94 overtime victory over the Hoyas on Feb. 14 drew 31,841 fans to the Carrier Dome, and a similar crowd is expected Monday.

“We have great fans here in Syracuse,” forward Kris Joseph said. “Our fans are die-hard fans and I think them being here and being so loud helps us a lot. I think it scares a lot of teams.”

Syracuse's zone is just too good. They rotate to every player so quickly and swarm those who get the ball in the middle. On offense they shoot too well and get the ball inside at will. They will be a tough out in the tournament.

Monroe needs to learn to think one second ahead, often he will get the ball and just hold it. Shoot, drive, or pass. I thought we could've tried so more dribble penetration tonight, Clark and Wright should dribble into the zone and then look to pass as opposed to just rotating it around the perimeter.

A tough team to play against. Hopefully the Hoyas learned something tonight.

Yeah because MD was such a relevant program before he came to MD. McDonalds all americans have MD as a top school on their list to attend.

Some people that don't know about coaching shouldn't comment on Gary Williams.

Exactly. Sorry, Gary just doesn't cheat like many other coaches and he'd much rather go after a player he can coach to become better for 4 years instead of a One-year superstar. You can't tell me coaches like Callipari or Pitino or even Calhoun get all these amazing players just because they're 'great' coaches. It's because they don't play by the rules.

Georgetown just wanted to win very badly today. After losing to Syracuse we were angry. Playing at home against a traditional powerhouse in front of a large crowd which included Obama and Biden.

Ball movement was superb(still is actually we are up 21). Wright knows when to score and when to distribute. Production off the bench from Thompson and Benimon(who has become more of a factor in recent games). Greg Monroe with the gigantic game, he is such a tough matchup. Freeman, Clark....everyone contibuted. Great win!

*edit* The criticism of Gary Williams is so unfounded. Realize he is one of the greatest motivators in college basketball and he recruits players that he feels will buy into his system and want to stay more than one year. And have you looked at the class he has recruited next year? 2 top 100 players in Terrell Stoglin and Mychal Parker with Terrence Ross still considering. He got Sean Mosley, one of the highest scoring players in Maryland high school history(I think the highest ever actually have to check). Two very good forwards in Jordan Williams and James Padgett this year. It is difficult to recruit every single player in the DC Metro area because there are so many good players! He's a great coach, don't be ignorant. I admit some of the criticisms last year were legitimate in terms of getting his team ready for games, but you can't put that all on him, it's the players who are ultimately responsible. He's a great coach, period.

*another edit* I never cared about George Mason, I am sorry. Nothing against them because they play hard and well, but I just never followed them hence I don't really care about them.

Didn't W&M beat down your school just a few weeks ago? Doesn't the CAA have a very good record against the ACC so far this year? Seems to me George Mason has been to the Final Four more recently than Maryland and that both GMU and VCU have both had more tournament success than teams like Maryland in the last several years.

you act as if george mason has been to multiple final fours.. it was once in a lifetime thing for them... md has a few down years but gary has the most wins against #1 teams and the jump to NBA really set back his plans for md after the national championship. he thought he got a great recruiting class with garrison, medley, gilchrist, and ibewke but now he is back on track with getting good recruits.. the NBA jump after 1 year is really simmering down not like when anthony and others made the jump so quickly

Comparing GMU and UMD is like comparing Apples to Oranges.

Maryland lost to W&M at the beginning of the year...theyve come on strong now and are on a roll.

In 2009, UMD upset a good California team in the NCAA tournament and lost to Memphis in the next round, whereas VCU lost to UCLA in the opener.
In 2008, UMD didnt make the tournament, and GMU lost in the first round.
In 2007, both UMD and VCU made it to the second round
In 2006, GMU made it to the Final Four
In 2005, only Old Dominion made the tournament
In 2004, UMD advances to second round, VCU loses opening round
In 2003, UMD advances to the Sweet 16
In 2002, UMD wins National Championship

Terps with the huge win tonight on the road at Florida State. I didn't watch the game because DirecTV doesn't get Raycom games but I was following online and saw some highlights on ESPNews and I saw Vasquez score some big buckets. He finished with 23 points. Milbourne with 18 and Hayes with 12, seniors stepping up. Jordan Williams had 14, he is playing very well for a freshman and has been playing very well recently. A little troubled by Mosley only scoring 1 point but everyone has off games every once and a while.

This win improves Maryland's resume siginificantly, at least for the moment. FSU is a decent team and road wins in the ACC are always hard to come by. Next game: home Sunday against the Tar Heels. 2 pm et, everyone tune in for a little pre Super Bowl Terps basketball!

It didn't occur to me until about 5 minutes left in the game that I could've been watching the game on ESPN360. I think you are being a little hard on Mosley, he's played well this year. He'll bounce back from this game.

That was indeed a tough loss to South Florida by the Hoyas. I think they were still caught up in the glamour of the win against Duke and didn't really take USF seriously. They will be alright, but they need to stay hungry in order to get the best seed possible. I'd love to see them win the Big East tournament this year too.

White, of course, was referring to Maryland senior guard Greivis Vasquez, whose eccentric and brash style of play has facilitated a unique relationship with the Cameron Crazies, the avid Duke student section that creates renowned hostile environments for visitors at each home game. On Saturday, Vasquez will play his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium when No. 8 Duke (20-4, 8-2 ACC) hosts Maryland (16-6, 6-2).

While White promises that the Crazies have plenty in store for Vasquez, he said their jeers would reflect a deference that slowly has developed over the past four years.

"I feel like a lot of Duke has had the same kind of experience," said White, a senior. "A lot of us do have a lot of emotion towards Vasquez, whether that's hate, whether that's dislike. It's hard to say exactly what it is. . . . However, I can tell you that a bunch of us, no matter how much we may dislike him, we do have respect for Greivis. He certainly, at least he shows the Crazies respect."

Georgetown's inconsistency is bothersome. It seems like they only get up for the "big" games. JTIII better be doing some serious motivating at practice.

Huge game for Maryland coming up in a few hours vs. Virginia(who also needs some wins). After the loss to Duke we need to get back on track. Also, frankly, our resume isn't that good. Florida State is the only good team we have beaten(twice). This from the Bubble Watch article on ESPN:

The Terrapins won't have much time to recover from their ugly 21-point loss at Duke on Saturday. Because last week's home game against Virginia was postponed because of a snowstorm, the Terps will play three games this coming week. Maryland hosts Virginia on Monday night, plays at NC State on Wednesday and hosts Georgia Tech on Saturday. Even with a surprising 6-3 record against ACC foes, the Terps have plenty of work to do before Selection Sunday. Maryland has only two victories over RPI top-50 foes (beating Florida State twice) and is 2-6 against RPI top-50 opponents. There isn't much that is impressive about the Terps' nonconference profile either, with their best victory coming against RPI No. 107 Fairfield. After this week's three-game slate, the Terps still play road games at Virginia Tech and Virginia and home games against Clemson and Duke. Maryland could use a couple of more signature victories to impress the NCAA selection committee.

It was that fool Jeff Allen who kept turning the ball over or bouncing off foul shots. Blame Delaney too for missing two critical free throws that would have tied it, or the last possession where Green? tries to hit a three for the win even though they were down two. Call it conservative but I would have probably tried to tie the game up and go to a triple overtime.

It was a tough loss from VT's perspective but if you're looking from MD's perspective it was a solid win and yes, that game against Duke is going to be big. Duke is scared. The only shame is the game is hidden on cable instead of being broadcast on Raycom so I have to put up Johnny Holliday and Chris Knoche again.

abdcskins

I like Delaney a lot, he's a baller. But yeah those two missed free throws hurt. I thought the refs missed a lot of traveling calls in VTech's favor, but I'm not gonna complain about it because I am sure they missed some in Maryland's favor too.

What was up with that "USA" chant when Vasquez was on the line in the first half? I mean, I get it yeah he is from Venezuela, but that was just dumb. I saw him nodding his head like okay that's how it is. Then he comes out in the second half and just torches them. I gotta say I loved that.

Yeah the Hoyas are struggling right now, they look so lost on offense. If they lose to Cincinnati and their first round Big East tournament game they could potentially be a 5 or 6 seed, which three weeks ago would've been impossible. Then again if they win a few in the Big East tourney they could be as high as a 3.

The shame is all pro sports except hockey used to have fans storm the field, fans stormed the field after Chambliss won the pennant for the Yankees, fans stormed the field multiple times for NFL games (see Giants - Bears 47-7 win in 1956)

LOL at the Duke fans bitterness. Instead of giving MD props for beating them they turn there attention to the fans. Obviously the MD fans got under not only the Duke players, but REALLY got under the skin of Duke fans. I love it!

Great game and was the epitome of what a college basketball game should be. The crowd was unbelievable and played an integral part in MD's victory. Vasquez was Vasquez and the role players did their jobs. Williams is growing up fast.

I do however think a two seed in the big dance is a reach at this point, but win the ACC tourney and it's very possible.

Nice enthusiasm man. Not sure about the #2 seed though, and I'm one of the biggest Terps fans on this board. I will agree that if we beat UVA and get say at least 1 win in the ACC tournament we can get a #3 seed. Even if we win the ACC tournament(which is a good possibility *no jinx*), I don't think we can get higher than a #3 just because of our lack of out of conference wins and technical "quality" wins because the ACC is down this year. Wins against Florida State, Clemson, and GTech are great, but they aren't like wins against solid top 25 teams like Purdue, Pittsburgh, Villanova, etc. Never know though.

Also, there is no way George Mason would "mop the floor" with Maryland. There's a slight possibility that they could beat Maryland, but even that is pipe dreams this year. We lost a very good William & Mary early in the year by 6 points when Gregory was just coming back. They are a much different team now. It's a posssibility, but I highly doubt George Mason would beat the Terps this year.

I can assure you that very few non-Terp fans are "bitter, envious, and jealous" of Maryland basketball.

A portion of Maryland fans are the most arrogant, entitled, bitter people you will ever come across. Backtrack a year ago and the majority of the fanbase hated Vasquez and wanted Williams fired. The perception of Williams being the most hilarious - you have a HoF coach and suddenly he's "not good enough" for Maryland in the eyes of a lot of fans.

Never has there been a more entitled and fickled group of fans than what certainly seems to be a large portion of Maryland fans. You beat Duke for the first time in 3 seasons and all of the sudden you think you're the class of the ACC and act like idiots burning things and blocking Rt. 1 over A REGULAR SEASON GAME.

I went to MD and I still feel the same way as I did a year ago. Replacing Gary is dumb and Vasquez is still a douche. He made some big plays last night, but I still cannot stand the guy.

MD is a good basketball program, but winning that championship made a lot of people think that they should be in the class year in and year out with Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, etc. Therefore, people wanted Gary gone because they were not.

Also agreed about the rioting after a regular season game, DUMB. But think about it, this generation of college kids did not have any big wins. They wanted a chance to carry on the tradition (good or bad haha).

The difference is playing in a below average conference vs The ACC(not this year, but historically one of the best, if not the best conferences in the NCAA).

You really can't compare the two, the ACC always has teams ranked in the top 25 with 6 or 7 teams making the tournament every year where the CAA fights for a at large bid every year. Every once in a while the CAA has a bracket buster that makes a solid run, while the ACC usually has at least one top seed(1 to 4) in the tourney.

At this point I wouldn't be suprised to see MD end up as a 4 seed for the tourney.

And the Redskins have gone through like ten coaches in the time that Gary Williams has been at Maryland. Teams that taste success want more success - it's like how the Wizards fanbase was pretty happy with just making the playoffs a few years ago, but now the standards are much higher (although the team is worse).

In any case, there was no way that Gary Williams was getting fired in reality - that was all just sports radio stirring the pot.

Yeah UVA is a big game to keep momentum going. Honestly I don't see us lower than a 4 seed...I just feel that we are gonna get one more win against UVA or in the ACC tournament and that would give us a stellar record.

Also, I would like to point out that Jordan Williams is the best freshman we've had in a while. He has shown up in big games all year. And look at his body! Dude is a warrior. Really helps to have a big man like that down low who will battle for rebounds(like the huge on last night to go up 2 with 1:28 left) and score down low. Also, I think Vasquez has played himself into a late first round early second round pick. Questions about his position(1 or 2) and his shooting still remain, but I think he has proven he can make big shots.
