Redskins vs. Broncos – Things to watch

By John Pappas
Warpath Confidential Editor

The matchup against the Denver Broncos has some interesting subplots. Sure the Redskins are 2-6, have lost to five NFC, and two division teams; but there are still eight games to play and in the NFL, anything can happen.

The Redskins’ offense hopes to build on last week’s third quarter performance, when the team had two 80-plus yard drives for touchdowns. The defense hopes for a much better performance against the run, having been embarrassed by Michael Turner and the Falcons.

This week the defense faces a Denver team that ranks 19th offensively, 18th rushing, and 16th passing. Meanwhile the Redskins’ sixth-ranked defense is number one against the pass, but only 25th against the run.

Offensively, Washington pits it’s 20th-ranked offense against Denver’s number three defense. Denver is seventh against the pass, and eighth against the run.

Eleventh-and-a-half Man?

The Redskins fans remain in revolt. There are expressions of discontent everywhere on the Internet; facebook groups dedicated to firing Vinny Cerrato, websites petitioning for Snyder to sell the team, and write-in efforts to show fan unhappiness. Never in modern times have fans been so displeased with the team, but will they protest in a way that most counts; by not showing up?

Greg Blache holds the key to an upset. He has to have his corners press the receivers. If they allow their usual 10-yards cushions, Orton will dink and dunk and play ball control at will.

Good article JimmiJo.

I fear that the only battle that we even have a chance at winning is the one against Orton... if Blache decides to pressure him at all.

12th man? No way. I am going, but I don't know anyone else personally who is going.

Levi Jones? Smoked. It could get ugly.

Moss vs. Bailey? Bailey will shut him down, hard.

My own personal match up:

Hall vs. Marshall? Marshall is a much too physical receiver for Hall. Marshall will probably have a huge game against our secondary that has developed a case of tackleitis.

I think our D bounces back this week.

Good article John, I'd sure like to see a win. I've almost forgotten what that is.

11 1/2 man? I'd probably say lower. Snyder has scared the 12th man out of his "house".

I'm gona' be taking the "Eleven and-a-half Man" option and be keeping one eye on, and cheering for, the Buccs, Lions, Jags, Rams and Titans games early. Draft position and all being at stake.

And as much as I don't want him ANYWHERE near a field the Redskins are playing on, may God go with Jason Campbell today against Dumervil, Williams and co.

Hail.

I think LB will have a good game, bying him more time on this team2(years) by then,ES fans will learn slow once again, that him and AC wouldn't start on any other NFL team..

Our Passing game should open up too. With Cp being hurt is a good thing for the Offense. With Cp playing, teams normally play 90% to stop CP(8 in the box,run biltz's)with CP out, the WR's ,and tailbacks should have open running room..We will win today

I'm sick of building off of third quarter drives. How about building off a drive that was made while the game was competitive?

Jason Reid has wrote that Cerrato is now on the hot seat.As well as Portis, Zorn, Campbell, and anyone else who does not fit the next system. These next games should have a high output of intensity because whoever stands out the second half of the season might be re-signed next year. The Broncos love quick slants and outs and feature Marshall all game. The corners have to press and the DEs have to pressure Orton. Last week Orton was terrible under pressure.Denver has had no success running the all which will help the Skins. The Skins D would have better numbers aginast the run if they were not on the field for 3 quarters.
My prediction:
Skins win TOP
4 Sacks
No turnovers
Betts rushes for 80 yards
Skins win by 3

I think Jones and Rhino will step up this week and protect Campbell. They will run screens to WRs and RBs to keep the D frompinninf their ears back. Orakpo wil get his first fumble recovery today.

Jones and Rhino? Are those guys playing?

Yup. :(.

We're now down to Jones NFL return at left tackle, with Heyer moving over to the right, and last years hopeless 3rd rounder finally seeing the field at right guard.

Again, may God go with you Jason with that line-up against Dumervil and co.

Hail.

I could barely make it through one quarter last week. I have a feeling I won't be finding too many "things to watch" this week either, unless I flip over to Red Zone Channel.

Be honest here, how many people are really looking forward to watching the Redskins take the field today?

What's the population of the greater Denver area. I'd say probably millions of people are looking forward to the game today.
