So I'm going to Tokyo next month for 7 nights, anyone that's been before can you suggest anything to do or things to buy? I should be meeting with some people there and I have some friends that grew up in Japan, but the more suggestions the better.
Thanks!

The heading is bound to end up in the 'Out Of Context' thread.

Why Tokyo? Surely you could have your 'first time' at home?

I'm sure Tiger Woods would have something to say about it

for the flight alone Bose headphones are a must. Nothing like having a nice set of headphones for a long flight when listening to music or watching the movies on the screen in front of you.

if you are meeting up with friends who grew up in Japan then you shouldn't have too much trouble having fun...

the best thing I would recommend is that bring down your barriers and try out everything that would normally make you little uncomfortable such are Karaoke...

also remember everything is always more fun when you have girls in your group especially when you go to Karaoke

i'd recommend going to a teppanyaki restaurant and having some kobe beef. i went here (http://www.anaintercontinental-tokyo.jp/e/rest/akasaka.html) when i was in tokyo, and the kobe was the single greatest thing i've eaten in my life. EXPENSIVE as hell, but it was worth it.

if you have local friends, they will be able to take you to a great place that probably costs less than the restaurant above (it's in a 5 star hotel, and priced accordingly).

This. I went to China in October. I told myself I would try every food put in front of me at least once, and go anywhere or do anything that the group was doing.

I tried a lot of food I normally never would and had an amazing time. It's probably a once in a lifetime trip so enjoy and do everything you possibly can!

Thanks for the input! The meeting up with people isn't 100% yet because their schedules can easily change. Thanks DCHogs, I totally forgot about getting Kobe beef there! I kept just thinking about all the fish and noodles.

You MUST go to Ruppungi. I also used to hang in Yokohama as well, but I don't know if it is still a good place to party since I was last ther in 99. Ruppungi is where are the international people are and its a BLAST. Plan on partying till 5am and catching the train home. oh and the clubs have a HIGH covercharge but they are worth it.

yeah if your budget allows then Kobe beef should be worth it... remember EVERYTHING in Tokyo is expensive...

if you cant meet up with your friends in Tokyo... you might want to try to meet up with some people online to be your guide who might be interested in learning/practicing english... its a hit or miss and little hard to get setup but it woudl be better than going at it just by yourself...

See this is one area I'm getting mixed tells about. Being that I live in NYC, I can go to international clubs anytime I want and choose not to for the most part. So going to Tokyo, I kinda wanna see local spots more. Maybe worth heading over there one night just to check it out though. Thanks!
