OK, I need some help. My 12 year old wants to buy Rock Band or Guitar Hero with her own money, which is fine. However, I am wondering if we need all the instruments that go with them? Do you have to have the drums, guitars, etc that I see described on the Beatles Hero, for instance?
Also, anyone have any preference between the two, or want to make a recommendation? I have a feeling I will end up playing this some as well, and would love to play the Beatles, Zeppelin, Bon Jovi (:paranoid: - uh, for my wife), etc.
Help please!

Absolutely 100% need all of the instruments.
And my advice...if you are new to GH/Rock band...buy an older one, maybe GH World Tour because the instruments are all up to date (cymbals and all) for much much cheaper than GH5. Then buy the discs for the other GH games (cheap and used) so that you have more tracks to play to.
Are there any new features of GH5 that necessitate the new instruments, anyone know? I guess even if so they will always do that so unless you buy the new set every year you will be behind the 8ball anyway, so may as well start now.

Having all the instruments makes for a more interactive experience, you can play together which is always fun. You should at least have 2 guitar controllers.
I find the drums difficult and not that much fun but I'm not 12 either.
Personally I prefer Guitar hero over Rock Band, just because I like the display better. Personal preference for oval jewels vs. rectangular.
I have Guitar Hero III, Aerosmith, Smash Hits, 5 and Van Halen. The only Guitar Hero I didn't like was Metalica, but I'm not a Metalica fan. I rented it to see which bands/songs they liked.
Rock Band does have the advantage of having some AC/DC and Guitar Hero doesn't.
Some of the most fun songs to play are 80s hairbands, Poison, Ratt, Twisted Sister, etc.
I've played Beatles Rock Band and I found it to be incredibly boring. It's cool because it's the Beatles but the songs are dull to play.

You don't need them all to start ... original Guitar Hero was just the guitar and game.
But obviously it's more fun with friends etc. if you have multiple guitars (2) and the drums, and microphone.
If you buy the big box set you usually get 1 guitar, game, microphone, and drums. This is good to start. Then you can buy the other game disks just for more music.

Rockband 2 is the same as the Beatles version without paying over a hundred bucks more for them to look retro. So save the money.
You can always buy the Beatles game and use the same instruments that come with Rockband 2.
My brother and my girlfriends brother both have GH and they like the challenge of Rockband better because you play other instruments.
And I was told that with Rockband 2 you are going to be able to play all of the older games with the instruments as well as the new ones for the foreseeable future.

I would get the Rock Band 2 bundle set. One all you have to do is buy or rent the Beatles and Original Rockband Set for the songs. Also the Rockband 2 Instruments are vastly improved over the original Rockband Instruments. Imo you NEED two guitars so someone can play Bass while the other plays Guitar. The game is so much fun when you can get 3 or more people involved on a daily basis. Start out on easy and work your way up. Oh and there are alot of songs you can download for free if you buy the bundle new. The bundle goes for about $99 now and you can find a good reliable extra wireless guitar for around $25 if you look around. Rockband is my most played game this gen. ^_^

Couple things here...
All the guitar hero controllers are compatible with all the guitar hero games. Same with Rock band and rock band games. This is nothing new...if you have guitar hero WT your guitar will work with GH5 unless something has drastically changed - thats always how it has worked with RB and GH for their respective lines.
GH and Rockband both have drums, bass, and mic on top of guitar.
Remember the assortment of instruments arent just for people to play together...playing the game on guitar mode...then playing it on drum mode...then singing...etc...they are completely different games. Sometimes your kid will pick up the guitar, sometimes the drums...it makes for a much longer replay experience.
The older guitar hero (world tour) instruments are better then the older Rockband (1 or 2) instruments so if I was looking to do this on the cheap that would motivate me to go with GH.
