Bucs, Redskins looking at McCardell as WRs coach (http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/01/26/bucs-redskins-looking-at-mccardell-as-wrs-coach/)
Posted: January 26th, 2010 | Jason La Canfora | Tags: Keenan McCardell (http://blogs.nfl.com/tag/keenan-mccardell/), Mike Shanahan (http://blogs.nfl.com/tag/mike-shanahan/), Richard Mann (http://blogs.nfl.com/tag/richard-mann/), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://blogs.nfl.com/tag/tampa-bay-buccaneers/), Washington Redskins (http://blogs.nfl.com/tag/washington-redskins/)
The Buccaneers and Redskins are considering Keenan McCardell for their receiver coaching vacancies, according to league sources.
McCardell, a longtime stalwart receiver, has had contact with both teams and likely will meet with them more during the Senior Bowl this week in Mobile, Ala.
McCardell, who spent time assisting the Giants during the 2009 preseason, has a strong reputation within the league, and his technique and preparation defined his 16-year NFL career. He originally was a 12th-round draft pick by the Redskins in 1991, but he became a star with the Jaguars (1996-2001) and later ended his career in Washington in 2007. He also played two seasons (2002-03) with the Bucs and spent time with the Browns (1992-95) and Chargers (2004-06).
The Redskins interviewed former Bucs receivers coach Richard Mann several weeks ago, but the job has remained vacant on new coach Mike Shanahan’s staff.
Interesting. What are your thought? Mine are.... Finally a coach I know something about. He would improve the recievers.
Now if only Darrell Green would come and coach the corners and safeties!

It does make you wonder with no appointment thus far for the job.
I'd read about McCardell being a favourite within the Buccs organization to replace Mann, but this is new him being linked here.
Interesting if Coach Mike did go with a complete rookie on his staff as regards actually coaching.
Hail.

I'd give McCardell a shot. I don't know if he could be a good coach or not, but he was a technician of his own craft when he was playing.
I also don't know anything about this Mann guy though.
Either would be far better than Hixon though.

I'd like McCardell in a WR coach position. Obviously I'm too young to remember him coming into the league but as a 12th round pick I'm willing to be he had physical limitations. If he could put together that long of a career he must know a thing or two about the position, the question is just whether or not he can communicate it.
Is James Thrash still under contract? I'm not sure he needs to be a position coach but I would love to still have him playing a role with the team. If anyone knows how to prepare its James Thrash.

He was here on Norv's staff for a year. Or was it Spurriers?
Shoot, it was that "memorable" a time I don't recall who's staff he was on..

Wow- a 12th round draft choice- :evilg:
The 1991 NFL draft, the one that gave us the infamous Brett Farve,'
Oh an Todd Marinovich and Browning Nagle.
Heck since Farve is still playing, maybe we get McCardell to come out of retirement................

Don't know how good of a coach he is, but I know he had great technique as a receiver and I am sure he has a lot to teach.
I'd like to see him work with Devin Thomas and Kelly

He may not have any interest in coaching.

I remember in 2007 after a missed pass play that resulted in a 4th down, McCardell was all over JC on the sideline and JC just stared at the ground. I can't remember if the play looked like a mix-up on the route or if JC threw it way high, but McCardell was letting him have it. I thought now that's something you don't see too often. Usually it's the quarterback screaming at the WR.

That's been pretty typical behavior on the Skins since 2007 (but not at the end of 2007.) Wonder why that might be?

Doing stuff with his church and his charities.
Really, there are other things to do in life other than football. One doesn't need to make it their lifetime commitment.

sign him as a coach, and if we make the playoffs, bring him out of retirement :-) i bet he can still play, he was underused in 2007, his lack of production was based solely on the lack of playing time he got, when he was on the field he produced!
i'd like to see a breakdown of yards recieved per play on the field in 2007 for him, i bet his numbers had him on pace for 1000 yards if he was seeing an average number of plays for a starter, i swear everytime he was on the field he caught a ball

I liked McCardell as a WR -- uncertain how he'd be as a coach.
Mann has a good track record of producing 1,000 yard WRs. i was hoping we'd be able to lure him here.
At least we won't have Hixon anymore.

McCardell was the WR coach in NY. He did a pretty good job with NY. Don't know why he isn't being brought back there. I certainly wouldn't mind if he came here. He was also here on the comcast set for a little while as an analyst.

If he coaches like he played, this could be the spark that DT needs to set off a stellar career. I remember McCardell being a very physical receiver and always using his big frame to his advantage. If he can teach DT to do the same, we may be in for a treat.

Either way we needed a new WR coach, I hope we can sign McCardell. Hopefully we have the edge as I don't think he left Tampa on favorable terms, or wasn't he traded to San Diego?

We're going to hear all kinds of stuff this week considering the Senior Bowl is one big coaching network event. That's why Zorn is there looking for a job. My guess is they go with someone who has actual coaching experience but you never know. He was interviewed by the Skins and Bucs.

He always was sharp and disciplined when he played. How that translates to being a coach, I don't know.
He surely couldn't do any worse than Hixon did.

A consummate Wide Receiver who was the definition of Blue Collar type player. Excellent, work ethic, etc. I would be happy with this signing.

I'm hoping he can teach Kelly how to do that if he comes here. Kelly could be a great guy to go to for the jump ball and for those tough catches in the middle because of his big frame.

I forgot he retired. Whoo. I thought we were bringing in yet another retread WR. I'm cool with him as coach though as long as he can teach what he's learned through the years well.

NFL Network yesterday was talking about how he was a "consultant" for all the young receivers on the Giants roster..... I don't know about you all, but I think our youngins have more physical talent than Manningham, Hixon, and even smith. The mental game and technique is the problem.

Definitely can relate to these young guys. I'd say take a chance on him. Also what about James Lofton, I don't think he's with anyone. I just want someone who's played in this league and been successful, Keenan or James Lofton would define that

As for the play in question, I think it was in the GB game where JC threw to Betts on 4th down and Betts came up short, while McCardell was wide open just past the marker. Not a good play by JC.

Gibbs was an idiot to let this guy go ... Skins putting together great coaching team ... now all they need is a decent QB.
And the Skins will have that when they draft Bradford in April.
Also, I would like to see McCardell get the job, but either he or Mann would be a good addition.

You are not going to get a different answer in this thread. Thrash was a below average receiver who stayed on the Skins and Philly's roster because of his special teams play. I'd rather have Mann or Hilliard in this case, and if Thrash wants to stay on as an assistant for receivers, then great.

I support this notion! McCardell should have been a top 5 WR of all time for the skins...
