View Full Version : McDonalds: Eat like an Olympian!

I can't find a video link, but has anyone else seen the McDonald's Chicken Nuggets commercials that have been running during the Olympics???? It's an outrage. The hook: eat like an Olympian. I don't imagine there is a single thing on the McDonalds menu that is high on an Olympian's diet. Yes, I know, any adult who actually buys into the notion that eating at McDonalds will make you an Olympian is clearly missing a chromosome or two. However, there really are millions of people out there (mostly children) that see this commercial and will think, "Hmmmm, if famous sports people eat there, it MUST be good for you!" I see 10 Bajillion McDonalds commercials every year, but I can't remember one that promotes their food as part of an athlete's diet. This is the last thing that fatass America needs right now.

Am I overreacting? What does the ES community think?

Didn't one of the snowboarders win a chicken nugget eating contest right before the games started?

I don't know what that "chicken type substance" in their chicken nuggets is, so maybe it could help.

The Micky D's by my house has a sign up for one of their sandwiches and calles it a "culinary delight". Now that's funny.

 I totally missed that. He was probably stoned off his rocker and snowboarders do not count. ;)

Yeah. Overreaction. After watching many of these athletes train,I can honestly say if they want to eat some nuggets, have a shake, eat a triple cheeseburger combo at Wendy's even,go for it. My impression was that most don't do that as a habit, but even if they did, that training more than makes up for it. I mean whoa.

Yeah, when I heard it I thought it was kind of appropriate.

Yeah, for most of these sports the athletes need a ton more calories than the average 9-5 desk jockey. If you're training as hard as some of these athletes you can eat a big mac combo and not worry about it.

The commercial makes me laugh, but I have heard that a lot of the American athletes actually do choose stuff like McDonald's when eating in the athletes village as opposed to choosing some of the other more foreign cuisines.

Should see these folks. Really. They train so hard and for so long. I talked to some,(U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton crew),and they would train twice a day at the gym sometimes. And then throw some track time in-between. Yikes.

Count me with the yeses. You could probably eat McDonalds three times a day and still be able to lose weight, whip yourself into shape, or compete at a very high level of competition. It really would just depend on what you eat and how you supplement it.

Obviously that won't fly if you take a Super Size Me approach. Ultimately, that's the kind of approach to food that gets most Americans in trouble.

It's not McDonalds, but you get the point (http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/08/13/the-michael-phelps-diet-dont-try-it-at-home/tab/article/)

Yeah ... if the furnace is hot enough it will burn pretty much anything. :)

That said, you still want to watch cholesterol and salt intake, etc.

Complete over-reaction. McDonald's and fast food in general get a bad rap. I'm not saying it's good for you, but it's not evil.

As far as the Phelps thing, my metabolism is on par with his. If I worked out at all I'd be just as defined as he is. I used to be before I got old and fat - which for me is 135 pounds. :)

Good point about cholesterol and salt. For a lot of people exercise alone can't keep cholesterol completely in check.

This reminds me that I was watching Top Gear last night and they had Usain Bolt on the program. Before winning gold and setting the world record in 100m at the Beijing Olympics he woke up, had some chicken nuggets, laid around, slept for awhile, got back up, had some more chicken nuggets and then went and scorched the earth with his feet. :ols:

Now, in fairness, I doubt he does it all the time. His explanation was he didn't trust the food over there and didn't want to chance eating something that wouldn't agree with him before the race so he ate the one thing he knew he could find and knew sat well with his stomach, good old McDonalds chicken nuggets.

Burger King tastes so much better, why would you pay a dollar for a mcDouble when you can get a much better tasting double cheese burger at BK for the same price? If you are going to eat unhealthy fast food, at least get something that taste decent. But yeah MCD's nuggets are about the only thing that work for me, but BK all the way.

Yea the commercial annoys me as well. I actually wish these fast food restaurants would make a real effort to provide healthier options like turkey burgers and healthy sides. They have made some effort but its been very minimal. I would love to see a fast food chain open up that has specifically low calorie, low fat options. I know the food would cost a little more but I would gladly pay the difference to have a fast meal option that was healthy. If McDonalds would add a healthy menu to their current menu (one that is really healthy not fake healthy), they would capture an entirely new market.

Most of the Olympians are in their early 20s, and when I was that age I could pack in the McD's and not gain an ounce of fat.

Yeah, but the weight you wanted to gain then was muscle and the weight you would gain now would be fat. I notice that somewhat with myself, but I think it's way less than the average dude because I'm such a skinny little twerp to start with; runs in the family.

When I used to run track, McDonald's provided food for all of the athletes at big east coast events.

At that age, and at that level of constant training...nothing can stop your body from burning that up like it's eating a tofu lettuce wrap (disclaimer).

Athletes eat McDonalds. Same as fat guys. Just not as frequently and not the same quantity.

They have McDonalds in the Olympic Village, and the athletes eat it, so I don't see anything wrong with that ad.

Russian Olympic Hockey team's take:

Is it true the players are unhappy with the food?

"Yeah, it's pretty bad. So much so that we just went to McDonalds to eat. But like they say, a diet like that isn't going to make you want to go jogging. Before a game you need something else, like spaghetti. They have spaghetti here, but it's absolutely tasteless. The guys tried it and they all turned it down."

I saw that yesterday. I thought it was pretty funny... I'm sure the Olympic athletes all got to where they are by eating grease patties. Or maybe they were referring to mount Olympus? That may be more appropriate.

There are "healthy" options at Mcdonald's too. And I'd have to guess that most of the side-effects from all the extra ingredients and junk won't kick in until long after an Olympics athlete's career is over (assuming there are side effects).

Yes there are. Kind a sort of. And any "side effects",especially long term are more than likely as a result from long term, consistent eating of the stuff. And a few other things. As for the main topic,Ren got this one right earlier on I believe. And the U.S. team isn't the only one to do so for that reason from what I gather.

Ahhh...you might want to be careful with your words there buddy as Sarah Palin might have an issue with you making fun of people having genetic defects.

I worked at McD for 6 years and the nuggets are made mostly out of breast meat and cooked in 100% pure veggie oil and now I think they have changed the oil to be more healthier anyways.

Now where did I put that coupon for 20 nuggets.....
