View Full Version : MMQB: Payton Sticks it to Jerry Jones

Thought the cowboys haters here would appreciate this:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/02/28/combine/index.html
I smell a nice rivalry cooking.
On Friday night, the Saints' staff at the combine gathered in a private room at St. Elmo Steakhouse, an 108-year-old Indy landmark, for a final celebratory nod to the Super Bowl win over the Colts. This is a group that likes its wine, and likes to have fun.
At the restaurant, word passed that Dallas owner Jerry Jones would have his Dallas group in this exact room Saturday night for a team dinner. Jones had even phoned ahead, according to a waiter, to make sure a magnum of a wine he loved, Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon, was ready to be served at dinner.
Sean Payton told the waiter he'd like to have that wine, too. The waiter told him: Sorry, sir. We have only one bottle left, and it's reserved for Mr. Jones.
Payton said he'd like to have the bottle nonetheless. I assume there was much angst on the part of the wait staff at that point. My God! Who do we piss off? One of the most powerful owners in the NFL, or the coach who's the toast of the NFL, the coach who just won the Super Bowl?
Here came the bottle of Caymus Special Selection, and the Saints' party drained it.
But drinking Jones' wine wasn't enough. Payton gave the waiter some instructions, took out his pen ... and, well, the Cowboys party found at the middle of their table the next evening an empty magnum of Caymus Special Selection cabernet sauvignon, with these words hand-written on the fancy label:
WHO DAT!
World Champions XLIV
Sean Payton
That's the kind of thing Jones will get a big laugh out of. And remember.

Congrats Sean, you have won 1. No knock on that, it's a big deal, Congrats.
Jerry meanwhile has 3.
Therefore by my math 3>1?
Now ask yourself this ... if the Cowboys would have done this, how would everyone react? I am pretty sure they would be ready to go to Dallas with pitchforks and hand grenades.
But, I guess his crap doesn't stink so it's all good.

I believe it. Like others have said, they probably found another bottle somewhere so they didn't piss of Jones too much. By doing this antic, it gets their name in the paper and increases publicity. Creates a story associated with the place. All of that increases sales. Plus, people don't blame the restaurant, they blame Payton. So it's not even negative publicity.

lol first there is a difference between winning as an owner and a coach.
yes we would be ready to bash the cowboys all day long. just like we are ready to do that today. you do realize you're on a Redskins board right? News flash Redskins fans don't like that crappy team outta Dallas. Always have, always will, and in every way. Basically the only negative things i don't wish on them is permanent injury or death. Sickness, sprains, economic woes (at reasonable level) and jessica simpson are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how much i hate the cowboys lol

LOL @ all of the Cowboys fans in this thread.
You make your victory over the Saints to be some sort of glorious we're-still-better-anyway type deal.
Why don't we go back in history and look at 1995? Some 6-10 team SWEPT the Super Bowl champions that year.
By the dumbass logic being used in this thread, which is expected by Dallas fans, that 6-10 team is better than the Super Bowl champions of that year. Makes perfect sense, right?

How did Payton even know about Jerry Jones' wine? I mean you'd have to know something just to think about asking about it. Do they like the same wine? Was it coincidence? Do they know each other?
Sounds to me like he knew about it and did it as a prank. No big deal.

Peyton won the super bowl. They thrived when it mattered and now are world champions. It doesn't get much more perfect than that. To even think Peyton would be better about a regular season game, after just winning the super bowl, is just stupid.

Yeah, I'm sure Payton can only think of that game the Cowboys won in New Orleans. He probably can't even think about the Super Bowl because of that.
Tom Coughlin doesn't remember beating the Pats in the Super Bowl, he has nighmares of the two regular season games he lost to the Cowboys that year.

Don't bring reality into this argument! You know that Dallas fans live in their own little world where the Cowboys are the best team evar and can't be bothered by what happens in the "real" NFL.

Re the Sean Payton/Jerry Jones/wine spat from yesterday's column (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/02/28/combine/index.html):
NFL.com friend Craig Ellenport e-mailed to say the NFL site had a live chat with Payton on Monday, and Ellenport relayed this response from the Saints coach about the incident of taking the Dallas owner's pre-reserved magnum of wine and drinking it Friday at the team dinner at St. Elmo steakhouse:
"After he replied to a question about raising the intensity of the rivalry,'' Ellenport wrote, "I asked Sean if he had spoken to Jerry since the Dallas dinner on Saturday night. He said yes -- he actually stopped by at the end of the dinner Saturday night to see them. Here's Sean's reply from the chat:
" 'I was at the Dallas dinner Saturday -- stopped by at the end of their dinner, and we had some good laughs. Jerry and I chatted, and we had the empty wine bottle right next to us. Jerry was going to bring it back to Dallas with him as a keepsake, but it accidentally broke that night at the restaurant!' "

More like Sean Payton one, Jerrah none, and Jimmy three. All three of your titles were with Jimmy's players, not Jerrah's. Jerrah's players have zero playoff wins all-time because this year's playoff win should get credited to the Tuna since alot of these guys were his players.

How would everyone react? Definitely not how you think they would react. Sport center probably would have put that in a top 10 somehow. Or had an entire segment on it, or maybe even a reality show for jerry jones would result.
The media loves you guys, there is no way you can deny that..
