I figured if Hot tub Time Machine gets it's own thread then this movie deserved one too.....
Saw it yesterday with the family. IMAX 3D is the only way to see this movie. I was floored by the entire experience. The colors, the story, the characters, all good.
What say you?!?

I concur absolutely - only we didn't get to see it IMAX just regular 3d...but the movie was SO amazing...so well done, and of course, Johnny Depp was absolutely amazing!!

Hell no! Sorry, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in particular was just awful, totally bastardized an excellent story. God it was creepy. Considering how much I love the book Alice in Wonderland I refuse to watch another of his bastardizations.

FYI, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is NOT the only movie that Tim Burton has made.

Tim Burton and Danny Elfman will be confined to the seventh level of Film-making Hell. That is all

No but his other movies suck too. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is just the one that pops to mind because it is another take on a classic story.

In this topic: opinions stated as fact.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Tim Burton, but don't really dislike his stuff either. When I heard a new Alice in Wonderland was coming out by Burton I was excited as I love Alice in Wonderland in general. However after seeing actual footage of it I don't know if it'll be as good as it sounds on paper. I'll probably see it any way, but it doesn't look special to me. I would love to be wrong about that though.

Just talked to someone who JUST saw it. They said it's pretty lame. Visually ok, but not on Avatar's level. That there is no story whatsoever and that Johnny Depp is just (what has become) the same old Johnny Depp. The same exact character as Jack Sparrow and Willy Wonka. I was gonna see it until now. Oh well.

Can't hate on Burton's directorial debut Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Classic and it's all been downhill since. The first Batman was good as well.

That's about exactly what I would have guessed. Burton and Depp continue to do the same thing over and over.
That said, I enjoy it a bit and will continue to watch their movies, just not in the theater.

I did and it is pretty awesome! The guy who blended the song with the scenes from the movie is seriously talented.

You could still see it and make your own decision. Not trying to be a jerk...just saying that one man's opinion is just that.
Looking at rotten tomatoes, there's definitely a string of criticism about the story. But "visually ok" may be an overstatement by your friend. You might find it visually fascinating, in which case I have no doubt it would be worth the price of admission.
I still plan to see it.

i actually expected to NOT like charlie and the chocolate factory. i've kind of been 'blah' and burtons movies (but i would probably like the older ones mentioned above more now than when i was younger and into different things). but i did like it, to my surprise. and i loved gene wilder in the original, too.

i think the previews look pretty good actually. i'm sure i'll see it.

Burton's storytelling has always been his downfall. Visually he can be amazing, but as far as plot and character development and other nuances of storytelling, his movies usually drift apart by the midway point and end up kind of meandering for awhile.

I think a problem is most people don't understand Burton. He is a dark person movie wise. This is why depp fits his roles perfectly. hell even in 21 Jumpstreet you could tell Depp was kind of dark. Depp fits real well in Burtons movies.

I saw it earlier today in IMAX 3D. In a nutshell the movie was good, not great, but good. I feel like the movie definitely had potential to be amazing, but it really wasn't "amazing". The visuals where tremendous, but story was just kind of blah. Some of the cinematography was really bad. There were parts in the movie where I couldn't clearly understand what the characters where saying which got pretty annoying.
I would definitely recommend people see it though!

So what you are saying is watching the movie with a little assitance from Mr. Fungi would be INSANE?
