You're wondering, where did that come from. Some of you might have seen the 1980 version of "The Diary of Anne Frank" staring Melissa Gilbert as Anne Frank. Well anyway, the last scene of the movie Anne's father Otto was reading Anne's diary to a couple of people. In the diary, after everything Anne and her family endured at the hands of Nazi Germany, she said that their was still good in all people and pretty much forgave them. Otto read this and said "she puts me to shame."

A lot of people thinks he's praising her, which may be. On the other hand, is he saying he's ashamed for her or is he ashamed she thinks this way?

I'm GUESSING that he's ashamed because she's much more forgiving than he could ever be?

If he's using the phrase the way everyone uses it today, then ACW's guess is spot on.

Doesn't seem ambiguous at all to me.
