REDSKINS TRADE FOR DONOVAN McNABB
Redskins make rare intra-division trade for six-time Pro Bowler
LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have acquired Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for their second pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and a draft choice in the 2011 NFL Draft.
"Donovan is an accomplished quarterback who has been a proven winner in the National Football League,” Redskins Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. “I have long admired his competitiveness and feel he will be an outstanding addition to the Redskins and our community. He knows our division and the roadmap to success in the NFC East. He will set a high standard of excellence and we are very excited to welcome Donovan to the Washington Redskins."
McNabb, 33, played in 148 games with 142 starts during his 11 seasons in Philadelphia. While with the Eagles, McNabb earned six Pro Bowl appearances (2000-04 and 2009) and completed 2,801-of-4,746 passing attempts (59.0%) for 32,873 yards, 216 touchdowns, 100 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 86.5. McNabb also added 573 rushing attempts for 3,249 yards (5.7 avg.) and 28 touchdowns.
He currently has the third-highest winning percentage among active quarterbacks (83-45-1, .647) behind Peyton Manning (119-59-0, .669) and Tom Brady (88-25-0, .779).
Since entering the NFL in 1999, McNabb ranks third in completions (2,801), third in passing yards (32,873), fourth in passing touchdowns (216), 14th in quarterback rating (86.5) and third in passes of 25 or more yards (273). McNabb also holds the best interception percentage in NFL history (2.1%) among quarterbacks who have played in 75 or more games.
In addition, McNabb has the second-best touchdown-to-interception ratio of all time, (209-96, 2.18) behind New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (217-92, 2.36).
The 6-2, 240-pound McNabb, is one of six players in NFL history with at least 25,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards (Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Steve McNair and John Elway).
In 2009, McNabb started 14 games, completing 267-of-443 passing attempts (60.3%) for 3,553 yards, 22 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 92.9.
McNabb was named NFC Offensive Player of the Year in 2004 when he set career highs in yards (3,875), touchdowns (31), completion percentage (64.0%) and quarterback rating (104.7) while leading the Eagles to an NFC Championship and an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIX. He also became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 30 touchdowns and fewer than 10 interceptions in a season (2004).
While in Philadelphia, McNabb led the Eagles to five NFC Championship games while setting franchise records in passing attempts, completions, passing yards and passing touchdown and was named to the Eagles’ 75th Anniversary Team.
McNabb was originally selected by the Eagles in the first round (second overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft.
McNabb, played collegiately at Syracuse where he was a four-year starter at quarterback and was named the Big East Conference’s offensive player of the decade (1990s), Big East offensive player of the year three times (1996-98), and first-team all conference quarterback in each of his four seasons. McNabb sett the Syracuse and Big East career records for touchdown passes (77), passing yards (8,389), total offensive yards (9,950) and total offensive plays (1,403). He also set school records in yards per game (221.1), passing efficiency (155.1) and yards per attempt (9.1).
McNabb was born on Nov. 25, 1976.

when i read this i had to check the date and make sure it wasn't April 1st.I like it, the Skins can now trade down and then trade one of those picks again and stock pile a few pciks and build some things on this team.maybe trad with Seattle with their 3 pciks in the first 40 or soemthing like that.Yes we could take Okueng but to me it would be better to trade down, not too far as to take ouselves out of the running for one of the top Lt's.but from what i amseeing from this front office i am gaining confidence that they will do what needs to be done.Unbelieveable, thats about sums it up.I have often said to Eagles fans that if they didn't want Mcnabb i would be glad to take him off their hands.I will also say that Kolb is no gaurentee to succeed either.Never saw it coming even though i heard that they were talkin.Just never thought the Eagles would trade him to us.

Love it. The haters are crazy.
This is what the haters wanted:
1st round: Clausen
2nd round: Best Tackle available.
NOW we will have:
1st round: Okung
2nd round: Mcnabb
Sounds good to me. Well, some may argue that the 3rd or 4th round pick next year changes everything, however we can definitely get a 3rd or 4th round pick for Campbell so that point is moot.

It could be a blessing or a curse. Blessing if the Eagles do poorly in 2010, Curse over the fans treating McNabb like garbage all during his tenure.

Yeah how people can be against this is beyond me. We will end up trading Campbell and maybe others to acquire more picks or you'll see a possible trade down. Bradford will be gone at #1 and I honestly don't think any other QB in this years draft deserves a 1st round grade. Draft a QB next year for the future and let him learn the system for 2-3 years while McNabb stays the starter.
I always said it...Philly fans don't deserve Donovan McNabb. All the guy did was win for them and they have been running him out of town for years. I'm beyond happy. The haters won't be haters when they see an accurate QB complete passes for us finally.
As far as the line goes...don't worry, Shanny does well with little talent and I guarantee you we address the line during the draft. This is a great move and actually makes us competitive next year.

 See that, that is me comming to terms with the fact that Sam Bradford won't be a Redkins franchise Quarterback. That is me crying tears for the doomed career of my beloved Sam Bradford's career in St. Louis. :(
Ok so we get a Pro-Bowl proven winner at QB, but at 33 years old and at the very end of his career. Which means a very small window to win, which our offensive line is not prepared for even if we did get Okung. Maybe we can trade him to St. Louis to swap spots and get their 2nd rounder. (Hey I can dream.)

This is the best thing that Shanny has done since coming to DC. Now, as long as Kyle can talk to Donovan and help him stop throwing the ball into the ground between 5-10yds...this is definate improvement in wins over last year. Kolb is Philly's JC...guess they finally get to find out about their "kid".

I'm against it because McNabb is 100 yrs old in football years & besides if they don't fix the O-line he won't do any better than Campbell. What away to build for the future. There is one group of people I can't stand on this message board, the Jason Campbell haters. He might have been a bad, average, good, or great QB if given half a chance. But with a crappy O-line & 5 or 6 different coach with 5 or 6 different offensive system the man didn't have a chance.

You're free to go elsewhere. This is actually the most Jason friendly board on the net, as far as I know. You could even start a Jason fan club to follow him from team to team and system to system.
Most of your other arguments have been debunked. Great Qbs don't take 5 seasons and 50+ starts to figure it out usually and he was the reason we didn't have homefield advantage in 2007. Never have I seen a player get a pass while the rest of his team is bashed relentlessly--not until you guys. And he didn't have 5 or 6 systems. He had Gibbs, then Saunders (for two years, still sucked) which are both related systems and then Zorn for two years and sucked in year 2 of Zorn.
Thankfully, though, we don't have to worry about you and your excuses anymore. At an end JC's rule is and not short enough it was!

Well, then how old does that make Favre? 500 yrs? Well guess what, a 500 yr old QB took a team who couldn't get over the hump even with Adrian Peterson to the NFC Championship game last year. Tavaris Jackson, who I consider to be equal to JC in talent, couldn't make the jump and neither has Campbell...yet. If JC's gonna eventually do it one day, it won't be in DC.
WTF?????????????????? I hate this. I hate McNabb. This ****ing sucks!
I hear Cleveland always needs fans. I hated Donovan for always kicking the Skins butts for years, now we don't have to worry about that as fans anymore. Oh, and he has a winning record against the Cowgurls and Gnats...JC doesn't.

We're playing the win now game. I would have liked a season or so where we could sit back and relax and watch people grow, rather than the usual 'you spent to win, so you'd better win' we are so used to.
Unless we win a SB, then I'm happy lol. Nothing less will do though. Winning our division and a playoff game or two doesn't interest me. **** or bust.

Now we have four QB on the roster and none is a long term answer so far. What upsets me is that we lost another set of valuable draft picks for an aging QB. I hope we are going to put up a trade to get these picks back. On the other hand the Eagles could experience the boomerang effect of this trade to a division rival (I hope McNabb will pluck those Eagles). It is also probably a sign of the end of JC in DC. Wait and see, Allahan will probably trade again, and in the end we will have a very good team.

Wait, Wait, Wait. Hold on you mean I'm gonna have to cheer for McNabb this year? Wow this is going to be weird considering I hated McNabb for all these years because he was an eagle first of all and second he used to abuse us. I'll get over it though once I hear McNabb drops back he's looking deep, oh he connects with Moss for the TD:ols:. You know what I do like JC but the one thing I didn't like was how he over threw his recievers and if he was more accurate we would have had a better offense. So we'll have at least like 9 more passing TD's alone this year wit McNabb playing QB because he has tremendous accuracy when it comes to the long ball. I am going to be honest I was not expecting to much this year, but I am truly excited now even though we still have alot of holes to fill.:helmet:

Guess I'm going with the last choice on this. Yall can say what you want but IMO...we drop JC & TC and get what we can get out them (maybe some more picks) and pick up Donovan McNabb. Yes, it pains me to say it too but Donovan McNabb. He's got a buttload of WCO experience knows our division opponents and only has about another 4 year signing left in him.
Bring in McNabb and start him. Bring in two young rookie QB's and let them learn while we continue to work out the O-line. Then next off-season open up the battle between the QB's and let the best man play while McNabb continues to influence and teach our young QB's.
There I said it, and yes it pains me to say it but it's my opinion and I promise you won't hear it again on the QB subject.

True...not only that though, but i'm sure they definately considered the fact that McNabb has played in essentially the same system. So the learning curve shouldn't be much of an issue. I'm still waiting to see what we can get for JC, but overall this was a great deal.

Come on bro., they will likely trade JC for additional picks. They can draft Okung @4. They can trade out of the 4th to aquire more picks to address the Oline. They can wait until after the draft to aquire released players....There are many options to address the line. Put the hateraid down.

So the people that are against this move or hating it and know what is best for the team than Shanny and our GM are just wasting their talents on this message board. I suggest you boys and girls send in your resume's to the Redskins ASAP, I am sure they cant wait to hire you :D
What are you going to do with JC? He sucks, he is not a good QB and Shanny knows it. You cant bring a rookie QB and have him start and get killed so what do you do to give you a good shot at winning some games while improving? Bring in Mchunky, trade JC for a 3rd round pick, pick a QB in the draft and improve the OL and DL the next 2 years.

And this is why the Skins will always be the quick-fix offseason champs. Look how excited the fan-base gets at a move that will have a maximum of 3-years worth of dividends, if that.
We'll all be sitting around in 2013, with a still-depleted line, no depth at any position on the roster, no core of young players to rely on, no QB, and no Super Bowl, and we'll wonder why no one saw it coming.
Seriously though, renew your season tickets and order your jerseys now.

Now here is the question I have for you: If you know that is how the Redskins will end up in 2013 will you still remain a fan? If so, doesn't that make you look like the silly one?
I'd much rather believe that upgrading at the most important position on the team will make the team better. I also believe that the Skins are not done dealing, meaning they still have PLENTY of time to add quality offensive lineman.
One thing that another poster pointed out was that this draft is deep with OL talent. This means that a lot of teams will get a influx of OL on their respective teams and will have to make decisions about keeping the incumbent OL player since they now have younger talent. This means that we may see a LOT of quality o-lineman get cut which we can pick them up for cheap.
But hey you keep cheering for that team you described.

they shipped Randy Moss out for a 4th and brought in Seymour for a 1st rounder. That organization should not be used in any kind of comparitive measure, IMO. What they do or do not do is irrelevant to the rest of the NFL, IMO anyways.

We can all speculate about what OTHER moves the team will make, but right now on its own merit and within the context of what this team needs, I don't think it's a good move.
Sure, if they move Campbell and some other players and recoup their lost picks and somehow manage to have their cake and eat it too then it's part of a great offseason, but if this is their only move, I don't like it.

Agreed, if this is their only move than yes the move is bad. But with the moves that Allen/Shanahan have made so far they make me believe two things: 1. That I have no idea what their next move will be. 2. There are more moves to come

Donovan makes the OL better by getting rid of the ball quicker instead of holding on to it forever like Jason did at times. We will draft a LT, and I will concede we will still need a RT but a quicker and more decisive QB will improve our mediocre line might even make them average.

The Eagles traded him because they had a deal they couldn't refuse, they are going to continue getting younger and more talented with that 2nd round pick, while we as the Redskins get older. This draft has a deep draft full of talent, and the Eagles have 11 picks, how many do we have?
I'm not sure if this is a good deal, seems eerily similar to when Gibbs v2 came back and traded away Ramsey and we acquired Brunell. I just hope Mcnabb punishes the eagles year after year for trading him.

Love it. The haters are crazy.
This is what the haters wanted:
1st round: Clausen
2nd round: Best Tackle available.
NOW we will have:
1st round: Okung
2nd round: Mcnabb
Sounds good to me.
Or we could have had Okung and Campbell AND a second round pick AND a fourth round pick. I'd bet most haters thought Campbell was pretty good compared with most others. For example:

Beating Philly a time or two doesn't count as a success, JC did that twice the other season and it counted for jack, same now. Getting to the playoffs doesn't count either, Romo does it regularly and it is as meaningless for us to do the same 'get there, go home' as he does.
Nothing wrong with trading picks for players. All comes down to winning the SB. Do that you're a hero, don't and you're a failure. As the anti JC crowd says, it's all about winning.
On a personal note I'm excited to see us play. Shanny Snr obviously thinks we can win now, Shanny knows best ;)
If he wins a SB he's going to Canton, if he doesn't I don't see him getting in (it was Elway/Davis that made the difference). High stakes indeed.

I suspect that there is much more in the works. After the off-season is over I think we will be able to look back over the big picture, and most of us will come to the conclusion that this was a great move for the team.

Donavan is definitely an upgrade. And poor JC continues his legacy as the most unlucky QB in NFL history.
Today Detroit traded for a quality offensive lineman (Sims) increasing the chances they will draft defensive T Suh (instead of Okung).
If the Skins do get Okung and somehow improve/draft at RT.... and get a safety to cover passes....
And Haslett adapts to his talent, gradually moving to a 3-4, rather than forcing square pegs (Haynesworth, Carter, Macintosh, Orakpo into square holes.....
We have outside chance at the playoffs!

I love this move and all the moves so far this offseason and heres why.
We need depth on both lines. We upgraded at QB, we will trade JC and maybe a acouple others and recoup some picks. and focus ALL picks on line help. Next year we can start focusing on getting younger at QB, RB, and what ever else we need.
Anyone complaing that we are getting older not younger this is true but with the picks we had there is no way we do it over night. So we focus on getting younger on the line this year. Then next year we can look to draft our franchise QB let him sit and learn. Draft a young running back drop willie and CP.
Believe it or not this move made us younger and you dont realize it yet.

False. McNabb wasn't willing to go to the Raiders. He wouldn't sign an extension there, and even threatened to retire.

Sounds good to me. Well, some may argue that the 3rd or 4th round pick next year changes everything, however we can definitely get a 3rd or 4th round pick for Campbell so that point is moot.
What are you going to do with JC? He sucks, he is not a good QB and Shanny knows it. You cant bring a rookie QB and have him start and get killed so what do you do to give you a good shot at winning some games while improving? Bring in Mchunky, trade JC for a 3rd round pick...

True enough, but there's a humongous difference between acknowledging something like that as a possibility, and counting on it happening. It seems to me that some people here are counting on someone giving them a 3rd round pick for Jason Campbell, and barring an ill-timed senior moment, it's not going to happen.

I agree with your point, but the second round pick could pay off for much more than just one year, or 3-4 years. With that being said, I am for the deal. A couple of years of McNabb is more production that you could likely get from that second and fourth round pick.

HTTR!I'm all for it as well but McNabb was not and never has been an 'accurate' passer. Check his completion percentage!

It really did irk me that Campbell HAD to go through his progressions each time. He could never figure out before the snap where the best place to go with the ball was unless it was a quick slant, which was already determined anyways. McNabb will bring that.
