Good, plan B if Okung is gone. I would suspect they would try to trade down a couple of spots.

I wonder if THIS is the guy we end up taking. He and Loadholt played pretty damn good at OU

Yep, I just posted something about this in the Okung thread.:)

Exactly, HigSkin. This would be the route I hope we take.

If we can pull off a trade down to Cleveland's spot, I think Williams should definitely be there. If not Williams, then Bulaga. Here's the scenario:
1. STL - Bradford
2. DET - Okung or Suh or McCoy
3. TB - Suh or McCoy
4. CLE - McCoy or Suh or or Berry or Clausen
5. KC - Berry or Okung or Bulaga
6. SEA - McCoy or Suh or Okung or Bulaga or Spiller
7. WSH - Okung or Williams or Bulaga

It's called doing your due diligence. Surprised that he wasn't brought in sooner.

BY no means is worth a 4th overall. We want him we need to trade down

We arent taking this guy 4th. If Okung is gone, we are more than likely trading down (which I hope we do)

Unless we get a few more picks before the draft I really think we will trade down if available.

Would prefer Okung (SUCH a beast) but if he's off the board, I'm fine with Williams. We just need a LT desperately.
Can't start new threads so sorry to veer off topic, but what do you guys think of trading Jason Campbell to Buffalo for Marshawn Lynch (and anything else we can get, if possible?) Lynch is an amazing RB (I saw him play at Cal) and was the 12th overall pick in 2007, but has had off the field troubles and Buffalo has had difficulty trading him.

RT @evansilva: Mayock believes #Redskins may well take Trent Williams over Okung at No. 4 because Williams "fits the scheme better."

Swapping with Cleveland, I think it's most likely to go like this:
Bradford - STL
Suh - DET
McCoy -TB
Berry - CLE
Okung - KC
Bulaga - SEA
Williams - WSH
What seems unlikely about this projection? I'm perfectly willing to see where I might be mistaken. Thanks.

I like Bulaga's run blocking ability and nasty demeanor a lot more than Williams.

Mayock: Trent Williams best fit for Redskins
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 7, 2010 9:00 PM ET
The Redskins have one pick out of the top 100 in the draft and it would be a stunner if they didn't take a left tackle with that pick.
Most mock drafts have Oklahoma State's Russell Okung (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=5632) as the choice at No. 4 overall, but NFL Network's Mike Mayock thinks Oklahoma's Trent Williams is the better fit (http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/04/07/williams-could-be-mcnabbs-protector-at-no-4/). The reasoning: Williams is more athletic and makes sense in Washington's zone blocking scheme.
There has been a growing belief lately that Williams could have the highest ceiling of any tackle in the draft, but is riskier than Okung. Shanahan plucked Ryan Clady (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=4616) in 2008, a similarly athletic player that some believed was a little raw.
Mayock was all over Clady back then, and loved Jay Cutler (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=3608) before anyone. Maybe he and Shanahan think alike.

Williams would be there in that scenario, the problem is that Williams is projected to be a RT in the NFL, not LT and you don't use a #7 overall on a RT.

That looks pretty close to me. The question is, what are we getting back for trading down? I'd rather address another need or trade further back than take Williams. Dare I say it, but could Clausen be an option here and OT later?

With all due respect, OS is this your opinion? TW is has been listed to play both T positions among most if not all draft boards.

I'm thinking that our interest in Williams as a LT is based on what some say is his ability to play in a zone blocking scheme. Mayock mentions this. If we swap with Cleveland, according to the trade chart, we should be able to get at least their 3rd and 5th round picks. They're also pretty well stocked at LB with the addition of Fujita. Maybe we get their third and D. Jackson (former Terp), who seems be out of favor with Mangini. With that 3rd round pick, we could take J. Fox or Capers to play RT.

I can remember about a couple weeks ago I suggested that the Skins could draft Williams if Okung was off the board at #4. But most were talking Bulaga if Okung was gone.
Now that Mike Mayock added his comment about Williams being selected by the Skins at four, everybody picks up on that. We need a LT at #4, do not trade down.

Trent Williams is the only highly regarded LT prospect who sucked at the position in REAL COLLEGE GAMES.
He got an AA nod purely on name recognition and "it's Oklahoma" - he was terrible last year. Just watch him play. He plays slow, yet he's athletic. He plays weak, yet he's big and strong. He's passive. He lacks toughness. Questions about work ethic.
I'm telling you, Williams will be a capital-B BUST. You think Gallery was a huge bust? Wait until you see this joker.
He's just another player who rose because of the combine, which isn't real football but RUNNING AND JUMPING IN A SHIRT, but isn't actually as good at football as people think he is.
I can tell this is the first of many years of OL reaches.
Taking him at 37 would be a reach.

TRADE DOWN...it would be HUGE to get a 2nd rounder! (or Marshall)

He's only played LT one year and that was last year. He struggled doing so. Now you can attribute that to Bradford going down or you can attribute that to the fact that he is a natural RT that was forced to play LT. I'm more of the mind that he's the later not the former.
http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2010/3/17/1376878/trent-williams-nfl-draft-scouting
Among all the mindless and incorrect scouting reports on the internet, this one actually has the most truth when it comes to Williams (even though its incomplete).
Pass Blocking: Williams was inconsistent in his pass protection in 2009, his first year at left tackle. At times, he was slow to adjust and get set. He works well enough to the outside, but counter moves to the inside gave him trouble. Is a natural knee bender, and has solid agility, so it's not out of the question that he could stay on the left side.
Pulling/Trapping: Used some on slide blocking and showed the footwork to move around good enough. Although he needs to improve his footwork some, it's good enough for the few times he'll probably be asked to pull or trap.
Run Blocking: Played in a man blocking scheme and looked good playing the run. He has a toughness that a lot of this year's top linemen don't possess. Williams gets good position and doesn't let defenders into his pads. Really does nice work running opponents right out of the play and pancaking them.
Size: Williams has a solid frame and a powerful built. He's not trim and cut like Bruce Campbell, but he doesn't need to be. He has long arms, but could use them better.
Strength: Has good functional playing strength but isn't a mammoth of a tackle. Could stand to get stronger, which would help him against power rushers. Williams has had trouble in the past with aggressive power rushers who can push him backward.
Technique: Where Williams gets knocked behind someone like Russell Okung is in his technique. Williams lunges at defenders too much and doesn't always get proper arm extension. Goes in reverse too much instead of just shuffling his feet laterally.
Final word: Williams' draft stock fluctuated for a lot of 2009 after switching from right tackle to left tackle. Although the left is where Williams has said he wants to play, he's clearly better on the right side. Before his senior year, he started 25 games on the right side and was one of the best blockers in the country.
Starting 13 games at left tackle, Williams was spotty. At the beginning of the season, he was erratic, particularly in his pass blocking. Williams wasn't fundamentally sound and got beat too often by rushers who could beat him to the outside. But as the season progressed, Williams clearly became more comfortable on the left side.
Williams played through some nagging injuries during his senior year, which clearly affected his transition to the left side. He sat out a game, but doesn't have an injury history to worry about.
With Williams, a team will get a surefire top right tackle. But if Williams can address some minor technical issues, he has the athleticism to play the left side.
Now the issue as it is noted above is his technique. Why that suffer is due to 2 things: arm length and strength. 34 1/4 inch arm length compared to 36 inches to Okung. 23 reps at 225lbs versus 38 reps for Okung. The only thing that Williams excels in is run blocking and straight line speed. His pass blocking is suspect at RT and was exposed at LT last year.
Can he play both Tackle positions, possibly even guard? Sure. I wouldn't draft him to be a LT though.

I was on a plane today from Indianapolis to Dulles Airport...
I see a big guy on the plane with an Under Armour sweatshirt with "OL 35" on it...
I text my brother to check the combine roster...
It was OT from Indiana, Rodger Safford.
Any chance he was being looked at by the Redskins today... or tomorrow???

Best news of the offseason. I have Saffold as the 15th rated prospect in this draft. Saffold is a great value late in Round 1 or early in Round 2. If we can trade down and still be in position to get him, that would be the best scenario in my mind.
