I was actually thinking the Skins should look into getting Sims cheap a while back, might make a good 3-4 MLB. But him going for Scheffler probably means...I would guess a 3rd or 4th rounder?

Great move for the Eagles IMO depending on the pick number

Thats pretty crazy. Seems like an awful big luxury (for Det) to trade a good MLB for 2nd TE so that the 1st round TE you drafted last year can have more time to rehab knee.

If the pick is 4th or later, pretty good deal IMO for yall.

fast guy but coming off two disappointing seasons.

Does this open up any talk of Cooley or Davis to the Broncos?

Rufus T Firefly

Wow, Scheffler goes for less than a 5th. Can't believe that.

If we could have dealt Cooley for a 2nd and 5th and deal the 5th for him........

What a pick up for Philly. Sims fits there pretty well. If he stays healthy they just got a steal.

Sims has fallen off since his first two years in the league. He is definitely a talent though and could perhaps flourish in the Eagles system because of his speed.

at first glimpse looks like a steal the Eagles, and the Broncos should have kept Scheffler if that's all they could get for him...

If Sims is had for basically a 5th....could the Skins expect any more than that for McIntosh?

ugh, sims is great, this sucks for us.

and why the hell does detroit want another tight end? they used a first rounder on one last year and now theyre trading for one? are they trying to emulate the ever feared jim zorn DOUBLE tight end set??

McDaniels offense utilizes blocking TE's, not passing. They dealt Tony for a reason...

Yes. Sims had not only failed to develop into the star they expected, he had regressed to the point of riding the bench a lot.

Great move for the Eagles.

Why would the Lions want another pass catching TE to go with Pettigrew? It's not like D-town has a plethora of solid defenders.

Lions may be counting on getting McLain in the second or Spikes at some point in the draft.

Pettigrew/Sheffler gives them a Davis/Cooley like situation...I don't really get this move for the Lions.

I think McClain is looking at top 15. Spikes in the 2nd-3rd makes sense.

The popular media spin is that this will allow Pettigrew to take his time recovering from his knee injury.

But again, trading a smart young LB who had simply fallen out of favor with Schwatz for a 2nd TE seems awful luxurious for a team that won 2 games last season.

But the ultimate loser is Denver. I guess McDaniels has to prove that he can do everything from scratch.

Sims has been a major disappointment. He's been downright awful the last three years. Zero instincts, constantly overran plays, missed a ton of tackles in space, etc. I don't know what Sims y'all have been watching but it wasn't #50 on the Lions.

The Lions plan on using a ton of two TE sets.

On defense?

Seriously I think you did well out of this. The Eagles did OK even if Simms is a bench guy but the Broncos got hosed IMO if it is true all they get is a 5th round pick.

The Eagles have so many damn draft picks that it was virtually giving up nothing to get a talent like Ernie Sims. Unfortunately, I could see him becoming a solid player in Philly with that aggressive defense.

Would you say that's a product of an overall lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball? Or has Sims just been giving up and blowing plays by himself?

The Broncos are the clear loser in this trade, the Eagles are the clear winner, and the Lions still manage to break even.

DeAndre Levy played well enough for the Lions after taking over for Sims that they likely won't be looking to upgrade.

Ken
April-19th-2010, 11:12 PM
I don't think it is the major upgrade some are making it out to be.. I don't view Simms as any better than Will Witherspoon that they let go. The only difference is Witherspoon is a bit older and has made plays in his career.

1 Int and 5 Passes defensed in a career for a guy who is a burner and undersized is unimpressive.

I think everyone who's saying the Eagles got a great player and a steal in this thread are basing this off of the Ernie Sims in Madden, not the one who sucked the last two years in real life....

My first thought was great pick up by the Eagles.

But if Millen says the Eagles got a steal I know the Lions did alright!

Matt Millen says Ernie Sims didn't fit with Detroit's new defense

As yet another first-round pick from the failed Matt Millen regime in Detroit becomes a former member of the team, who better to explain what happened with linebacker Ernie Sims (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=3667) than, well, Matt Millen?

In an interview with 97.3 FM in Atlantic City, Millen told Mike Gill of The Sportsbash that Sims simply doesn't fit the new defense that's being implemented in Detroit.

As Millen explains it, Sims was drafted to play weakside linebacker in the Tampa Two/Cover Two defense, which is premised on speed and athleticism. Under coach Jim Schwartz, larger linebackers are required.

Millen also suggested that the Eagles got a steal, given that they got the ninth pick in the 2006 draft for only a fifth-round selection.

"The problem is when you change the defense, sometimes guys fit, [and] sometimes they don't fit," Millen said.

Still, the Lions got tight end Tony Scheffler (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=3705) and a seventh-round pick for Sims. If anyone got screwed here, it was Denver, who got a two-round upgrade (from seven to five) for a guy who was a second-round pick four years ago.

Exactly. There were some players coming out of college I thought would be great in the pros, but for some reason (sometimes injury) they fall flat in the pros. I thought Mike Williams the receiver would do fine in the pros. I thought Mike Williams the tackle would also be fine. Everyone has their list. Courtney Brown? The Broncos tried to rehash the former #1 pick a few years ago and it didn't work.

A former 1st rounder that looked great in college doesn't really mean much.

Now I loved Sims coming out, and the Eagles will only pay like 1M this year and a 5th rounder, so it's certainly a risk worth taking, but this is far from a sure thing.

I hate to say it, but a very good move for the Eagles - their LB corps was their weak link last year(even WITHOUT the injuries) - but although Sims may not have lived up to his #5 overall pick status, nonetheless, he fits in perfectly with Philly's D schemes. With Bradley/Gaither/Jordan/Sims, McDermott is going to be able to utilize alot of speed, especially in the blitz department. Bad news for us - we won't be able to exploit their front 7 like we did the last 2 games of last year.

Make no mistake - Eagles, even without McNabb/Westbrook, are going to be very good this year.
