Keenan McCardell Is Transitioning Nicely To Coaching

Posted Apr 20th 2010 10:18AM by Matt Terl (author feed)

Before this past weekend's minicamp had even kicked off, I had already heard a lot about how impressive new wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell had been.

Malcolm Kelly, for example, told me that "He showed me stuff, man, the first day I talked to him. Just stuff where I was messing up during the season and if I would've just tweaked it just a little bit, it would've made it that much easier on me. "

And Santana Moss was similarly enthused. "He's already drilling us now telling us what we need to do better," Moss said, "what he wants to see from us, and that's great. I like when a coach can tell me to put everything to the side, who you are, what you do, how you've done in this league, and say, 'I'm your coach, I'm going to tell you when you're right, I'm going to tell you when you're wrong, and that's how it is.' I respect people like that."

Good. Have to see it on the field, but good.

Love it anytime players say they respect their coaches here.

Sounds good - hope it translates to production!

Did anybody else see in the mini camp reports that Devin Thomas was limited working out on a side field with the other guys returning from surgery and injury. Its very early but I want to see him get as many reps in the offense as possible - anyone have any idea why he was limited?

It would be nice to have a legitimate WR coach on this team again, I hope McCardell can fulfill that role like he appears to be so far.

These quotes from the WRs are a direct result of Stan Hixon being here for the last 6 or so years. It's like eating filet mignon after having nothing but hamburger.

with the WR corps the Skins have now, I wouldn't mind seeing McCardell dress fora few games.

Its funny that McCardell played for Hixon in 2008, wonder what he thought of him? I know we all had our opinion but being a player and now a coach so soon, that has to be a strange transition.

I especially liked this:

"I'm gonna give you some love when you need it," McCardell said as minicamp wrapped up, before quickly adding, "I'm gonna give you some hard love when you need it, too. I mean, I think those guys are adjusting to the way I am; they understand that I'm a competitor, and I want them to have that competitive drive like I have."

I like that. Light a fire under their butts! Though I think Santana has always given it his all, but for the younger guys...go get 'em Keenan!

I hope this translates into results on the field.

It's too bad such a good article is accompanied by such a terrible pic. McCardell looks like he's going for a stroll down the catwalk in high heels.

I still believe that getting rid of Stan Hixon will do wonders for our young WR's, along with everything else. This is great to hear.
