Sources: Gholston working on D-line

The Jets' acquisition of Jason Taylor Tuesday is a tacit admission the organization has lost hope for Vernon Gholston. In fact, Gholston's days as a rush linebacker appear over.

After mulling the move for weeks, the Jets are leaning heavily toward making Gholston a full-time defensive end, league sources told ESPNNewYork.com. The former first-round pick has been working out with the defensive linemen for weeks, sources said, and now the Taylor signing all but clinches it. The team will wait to see how things shake out in the draft before making it permanent.

Gholston, the sixth overall choice in 2008, was drafted to play outside linebacker in the base defense and rush the quarterback on passing downs. But he has yet to record a sack in two seasons, earning the "bust" label. He's entering the middle year of a five-year contract that pays him $21 million in guarantees, arguably the worst money the Jets ever spent.

Rex Ryan inherited Gholston from the previous coaching staff, promising big things for the former Ohio State standout. It was one of the few bold predictions that Ryan failed to deliver.

The move to defensive end means Gholston is one step closer to the door. In Ryan's 3-4 scheme, the end is a non-glamour position. The ends have a two-gap responsibility, tying up blockers so the linebackers can make the plays. It's believed that Gholston will serve as Shaun Ellis' backup.

Ryan, speaking Tuesday night to reporters, said he plans to use Taylor, Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas in a rotation as outside linebacker. He never mentioned Gholston. Ryan wants to keep his pass rushers fresh for the fourth quarter, with the hope of avoiding some of the late-game meltdowns that almost ruined the Jets in 2009.

They're gonna put him at 3-4 DE...?

He's gonna go from bad to really bad unless a miracle happens.

If he is cut Id gladly take him. Such bust labels were put on Cedric Benson his entire time in Chicago, he goes to Cincy and tears it up. A change of scenery can help certain people.

I wouldn't say he tore it up but I know what you mean.

Factor in he missed three games last season.

8th in the league in total rushing yards. Second in yards/game. I believe he also set a franchise record for 100 yard games in a season but I can't find a stat for that at the moment.

Gholston seems light to be playing DE in a 3-4 but hopefully they can figure something out. I never like to see guys bust out of the league unless they deserve it (Jamarcus Russel, Pacman, etc.)

Gholston a bust? Nobody saw that coming. (Ditto on Heyward-Bey and Ginn.)

:ols: Well, Ginn was really obvious and Heyward-Bey, well give him some time, I don't know (but probably yeah.)

Gholston, I heard different things about, actually. At least more conflicting views than with Ginn or H-B.

Ginn was a total joke. I mean, he'd have been a GREAT later round spec. teams pick, hell, even 3rd round if you value that highly. But to pick him that high, I'd have fired Cameron (or whoever) ON THE SPOT for even suggesting it.

I won't go too much into Ohio State players, other than to say they seem to turn out a lot of gigantic busts. Their less heralded players actually end up being solid contributors in many cases but Andy Katzenmoyer? Ginn? Gholston?

Meanwhile Michigan (though I wonder with RichRod) gives the league Manningham, Jake Long, LaMarr Woodley, Davis Harris and soon the great Brandon Graham.

Well Ginn was slotted as a 1st in most of the mocks I saw. Just late round 1st. His receiving skills (hands, routes, etc) were iffy but his speed was legit. So there was a thought that he could be coached up and turned into a stud. You don't take projects top 10 though.

Another workout warrior failing to live up to his draft position.

When Ryan originally agreed to be the Head Coach of the Jets I immediately thought that Gholston would become a Suggs-like player . . . I figured he had the athletic ability to thrive in Ryan's system and play the same role that Suggs plays in Baltimore . . . Obviously I was wrong.

True, I guess he was ranked higher than a 2nd rounder. But yeah, it was still silly. I think a lot of people were looking at Hester and upping his value. But he was not quite the returner Hester was and would still need work on his game as a receiver. But that said, you're absolutely right on using a top 10 pick on a project wideout when you are not already a great or even very good team.

It's all in the hips. Suggs is fluid, Gholston is stiff. Suggs can move, Gholston is a train, following the tracks and nowhere else.

Gholston is a younger version of Andre Carter. He should be successful if he gets the chance to play DE in a 4-3 scheme.
