NFL DRAFT MAKES PRIMETIME DEBUT IN 2010

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins will conduct their first draft under Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen beginning Thursday.

The 2010 NFL Draft will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and NFL Network.

The draft will continue at 6 p.m. ET on Friday with the second and third rounds, and will conclude with rounds 4-7 on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

The Washington Redskins will host media at Redskins Park all three days. Head Coach Mike Shanahan is scheduled to speak to the media on Thursday night. A Redskins executive will be available to the media following the team’s final selection on Saturday.

Following his press conference on Saturday, Shanahan will travel to FedExField, where he will address fans gathered at the Redskins Draft Party. The Redskins first-round pick is scheduled to attend the Draft Party at noon.

The 2010 Draft will feature a three-day format for the first time. Thursday’s first round will allow 10 minutes before each pick. Last year’s opening round took three hours and 29 minutes to complete.

The second round, which resumes the draft on Friday evening, allows seven minutes between picks. The third round, which allows five minutes between selections, concludes the second day. In 2009, the second and third rounds lasted a combined four hours and 30 minutes.

The final four rounds will take place on Saturday and allow five minutes between picks. Last year, rounds 4-7 took seven hours and 22 minutes to complete. Live coverage of the entire draft will be provided by both the NFL Network and ESPN/ESPN2.

Trading is allowed during the course of the draft. The Commissioner reserves the right to proceed with the selection process, however, if a club fails to complete a trade within their allotted time period in that round.

There will be a total of seven rounds and 255 selections (223 regular choices and 32 compensatory choices). The NFL awarded 32 draft picks to 16 teams that sustained a net loss of unrestricted free agents in 2009. Broken down by rounds, those 32 picks consist of three in the third, one in the fourth, six in the fifth, six in the sixth and 16 in the seventh round.
