ES Coverage: 2010 NFL Draft - Day 1

04/22/10

:helmet:

Guess who's back?

Greetings my friends. JimmiJo here to bring you all the action from Redskins Park on this glorious day 1 of the 2010 NFL Draft.

I haven't done much around here for a while, but with Murf being terminally lazy, and asking that I pitch in, I gladly stepped up. I can normally be found over at Warpath Confidential (http://web.warpathconfidential.com/) using the alias John Pappas. But tonight I'm all yours.

Except for the parts where I am somewhere else.

The excitment here is palpable. Picture a room with two large flat panel TVs and a dozen middle-aged writers. Man, it doesn't get any better. The good news is they are supposed to feed us, so at least I've got that going for me.

So with the draft set to begin in an hour, what do you think? We've been treated to a slew of rumors and depending on whom you listen to, every possible scenario could happen. They could trade up, they could trade down, they could pick the safety Eric Berry, the tackle Trent Williams, Russell Okung, or get Sam Bradford is he is there.

I'll tell you what I think and get it out of the way: The Redskins select Okung with the number 4 pick. I think everything else has been a smoke screen. Detroit might go offensive tackle so maybe floating the Williams interest is a way to boost his stock so that Washington can land Okung.

That being said, if they take Williams, I'm still pretty happy. If they take Berry, I will throw up in my mouth.

For the record, I'm not predicting this as a lock, just my thoughts. Anything could happen, and that's why you are reading this and we are watching what happens begining at 7:30PM.

I am aware of the rumors regarding the Vikings' interest in Haynesworth. I have already heard mixed things on this, so not sure where it is actually at. I got excited when I first heard the report because it suggested Washington could get more picks, something they desparately need.

Ok, I'm going to take of some business here. I would like to hear what you guys think is going to happen.

6:50PM

With less than an hour to go, the big news here is that they have not brought us any pizza.

Other than that, the press room is doing roughly what you are out in Internet land - waiting.

The way this normally works is that the team will make the pick. We will find out when you do. Shortly after however, we will get the selection on a conference call for an interview. I will post the audio of this.

Later this evening we are going to have a presser with Bruce Allen, and I will get you that audio as well.

As we go feel free to chime in. I will answer as many questions as I can.

7:10PM

Press room has filled up. No hot rumors here. Worst of all; no pizza.

Curse you pizza gods!

7:30PM

Time to get this puppy started. The pizza got here in the nick of time, so we are fat and happy.

Here's to a good draft!

And with the fourth pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select Trent Williams.
Offensive Tackle
University of Oklahoma Sooners
#71
6:04.5-314
Longview, Texas
Longview High school

Williams started 39-of-50 games during his Oklahoma career, including twelve at left tackle and 27 on the right side…He registered 369 knockdowns and 36 touchdown resulting blocks that included 230 knockdown blocks in his final two seasons, averaging 9.2 knockdowns and 0.84 touchdown-resulting blocks per game as a junior and senior combined…Also recorded five tackles (3 solos).

8:10PM

Ok, we are standing by to get him on the phone. I'll get the audio up once I get it.

More on Williams:

CAMPUS AGILITY TESTS
4.82 in the 40-yard dash…1.69 10-yard dash…2.84 20-yard dash…4.66 20-yard shuttle…7.58 three-cone drill…32-inch vertical jump…9’4” broad jump…Bench pressed 225 pounds 21 times…375-pound bench press…34 ¼-inch arm
length…9 ¾-inch hands.

Fun Fact

For the third straight year, the Redskins have drafted a player who attended Longview H.S. is Texas. Malcolm Kelly, Robert Henson, and Trent Williams

9:20PM

We will be interviewing Shanahan is about 20 minutes they tell us. Will have audio up after.

10:30PM

Here's a quick piece (http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?t=322283) on Shanahan's comments on Haynesworth.

12:00AM

Guys, enjoyed the heck out of tonight. I like the pick and think the Redskins helped themselves a lot. Thought Okung was better, but what the hell do I know?

I know that they had to have a tackle, and they got one.

What's not to like?

I will be on hand tomorrow in case the team makes a trade. Talk to you then.

It'll either be Okung or Berry I say, but the Rams could shake things up and pick Suh. Why? Just the fact they haven't made a move yet...its just odd. If Bradford's on the board, I see us grabbing him and not trading down.

They have us relegated to another building, and even when we were in the building, the powers that be would be holed-up in the war room.

So, can't say. There is no real buzz here in the press room.

In other words, we have no damn idea.

Thanks for the coverage - your work is highly thought of in this household.

But I do like how this FO is keeping everything close to the vest. It is a refreshing change of pace - the future looks very good with this regime.

Why?

Genuinely curious. I didn't hear much about TW until about a week ago. So i'm a bit confused of the TW over RO pick.

Any reasons anyone is aware of?

It seems to me that TW may have fallen quite a ways if we hadn't taken him.

He would have gone to Seattle I do believe.

Honestly, he's got the most upside and I'm thinking the best athlete and the highlight they showed of him...he looks like a perfect fit for the ZBS so he should do great for us. Honestly, I hear he was rated above Okung in January or what not but Okung started moving up because of some odd reason, not sure though.

Because they picked a guy rated very high who can help them right away.

While the reports on Williams are a little mixed, no-one believes he is not a major talent.

What I'd seen is TW and Okung flipping selection spot (or "bpa spot") on many boards, like some had McCoy ahead of Suh. I don't watch college football so I'm just hoping the two were pretty close in value because of this.

I've been saying elsewhere that a number of people called this (not me)....and there was plenty of vaild reasons presented in those discussions...I thought the arguments pro/con vs okung were good enough, though I (being an expert and all) still had a slight preference for Okung...that said, if Shanny thinks between the two this guy was the right one, I'm fine with that...like I said, this should not "stun" anyone with a brain who's been paying any kind of attention...disagree, fine, but it's hardly some big "ONOZ"...

I think we may have gotten the best Offensive Tackle in the draft. I felt that way months ago about Trent Williams. The only thing is I think you will have to play him at right tackle and develop him a while so he improves his pass blocking enough to be relied on at left tackle. But this also tells me we plan on running it even more than I thought before with the 3 pro bowl running backs. This team is going to run run run... and then run some more.

Most Mocks had McClain going 11 to Denver. He is a great prospect at MLB he is a heat seeking missile. This is actually a quality pick for the Raiders.

Posted this in another thread...

There WERE some people who thought Williams would be worth a top 5 pick:

This week's updated version of Sporting News' mock draft shows one change from last week: the Detroit Lions could go with Trent Williams, whom Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande and his team of former NFL scouts believe is a more athletic player than Russell Okung.

Here's the projected the first round:

1. Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma. While Ndamukong Suh is the player many have been pencilling in for the Rams since Bradford's injury, it looks like Bradford's shoulder is going to check out fine and if it does you can be sure the Rams are going to get their young QB to re-build around.

2. Lions: Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma. While many believe the Lions will pick Russell Okung, we believe that based on film, Williams is the better player. If the concerns about his weight are not a deal breaker, then the Lions may surprise some by picking Williams ahead of Okung.

http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/article/2010-03-18/sns-mock-nfl-draft-oklahomas-trent-williams-moves-board

Round One, Pick Five—Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma

Matt Cassel was tossed around like a rag doll last season, taking 42 total sacks. Trent Williams is a very balanced blocker with the quickness and explosiveness to be an elite tackle in the NFL.

With not a single receiver reaching the 50-catch mark last season, Williams gives Cassel must-needed protection and visibility to find his open receivers.

Oklahoma OT Trent Williams is making quite the surge in draft boards as of late. According to a Redskins beat writer, he's the "likely" pick for Washington's fourth overall selection. The reasoning is that he's a better fit for the Redskins zone-blocking scheme, which is a similar scheme the Chiefs run.

So, the Chiefs probably like him (if they are thinking offensive tackle).

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/4/20/1432882/add-oklahoma-ot-trent-williams-to

This franchise (the Seahawks) has so many needs that it’s kind of hard to determine where to start. With that said it seems as though finding a replacement for Walter Jones at left tackle is a top priority and they will likely choose from whoever is left in the Trent Williams, Russell Okung, Bryan Bulaga grouping. Williams is actually a perfect fit for the zone blocking scheme that Alex Gibbs is installing so finding him still available would be a real stroke of luck for the Seahawks.

Updated version of the 'Hot 100' prospects for 2010
Gil Brandt By Gil Brandt | NFL.com

HQ video delivered by Akamai

It's been almost three weeks since I published my early list of the "Hot 100" prospects for the 2010 draft. Even broken down into groups of 10, there has been enough information gathered in recent days to call for a few tweaks.

I'm not going to nitpick to the point of saying something was t5he 25th-best prospect and now they're No. 23. But there are enough guys who I have moving up and down in the "tier" groupings to provide an update.

Here is my final list of the "Hot 100" draft prospects, listed alphabetically within their tiers:
Tier One (1-10 listed alphabetically)

Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
5-11 5/8, 211
Smart, with excellent ball skills. Former cornerback with outstanding athleticism. High-character person.

Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
6-4 ¼, 236
A natural leader, athletic and very accurate. Threw 50 touchdown passes in 2008.

Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
6-5 3/8, 314
An outstanding run blocker in the zone blocking system. He is mean and aggressive, and has been very well coached.

Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
6-2 5/8, 222
A very accurate passer. He threw only four interceptions in 2009 -- and one of those was a fluke that bounced off a player's back. He can work under center or in the shotgun. Well coached by Charlie Weis.

Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
6-foot-5, 323 pounds
(UP FROM TIER 2) Huge man with ability, and he moves well. He needs to get stronger, and also needs to show more passion for the game.

Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
6-4 1/8, 295
Outstanding athlete who is very quick. He is comparable to Tommie Harris of the Bears. Plays with very good technique.

Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
6-5 1/4, 307
His 38-inch arms and great footwork make him an outstanding pass protector. Four-year starter in a good program. Was great in college against top pass rushers.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
6-4 5/8, 270
(UP FROM TIER 2) Very limited football background. He was a high school basketball player with only eight games at the Div. I level. Has outstanding speed and athletic ability.

Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
6-3 7/8, 307
Very strong and very athletic, he has outstanding quickness and a motor that never stops. He can play end if needed.

Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
6-4 5/8, 315
Has outstanding fundamentals for the system. Well coached, he can play right or left tackle. Has a very good punch.

I'm crazy excited about this guy. He's mean mean mean as a blocker PERIOD! Dude has a knack for putting dudes on their *****. He's a vicious blocker. We're going a monster run game because of this dude and he'll be fine pass blocking cause our QB will get the ball out fast. This is a GREAT pick.

EDIT: OH, and I almost forgot, we have an OT with a knickname already. Honestly, how awesome does "Silverback" sound!!!

I'm so happy to see Shanahan was lying about being happy with the current offensive line :-)

Building a good offensive line isn't so much about picking a couple of the right guys, its about bringing in linemen after linemen after linemen and seeing who sticks. Its EMPHASIZING the offensive line. Good to see us start doing that!

Bryan Baluga is still available. I wish we had some ammo to go up and get him too, because he sure is not going to get past the Packers.

Edit: Same concept can be said about Jimmy Clausen.

Trent Williams OT Oklahoma

Overview

After the Sooners failed to capture the national championship in 2008, many draft analysts figured that Williams, tight end Jermaine Gresham and quarterback Sam Bradford had played their final game at Oklahoma. With all three expected to be high draft picks, they surprised experts and Sooners coaching staff alike, as they announced they were returning to college in 2009 for one more shot at the "brass ring."

That dream never materialized, as Bradford suffered a shoulder injury in the 2009 season-opening loss to Brigham Young, immediately ending Oklahoma's title march before it could even begin. Gresham never made it out of fall camp, missing the entire season after undergoing knee surgery.

With All-American offensive linemen, Phil Loadholt and Duke Robinson having graduated, the leadership role on the Sooners front wall fell upon the shoulders of Williams, who was also making the move from right tackle to the left side position made vacant by Loadholt's departure.

Williams made a smooth adjustment to his new position and remained relatively injury-free until late in the campaign, as a concussion would sideline him for the season finale vs. Oklahoma State and the Sun Bowl match-up vs. Stanford. The Sooners limped through those final games, as their left tackle joined fellow offensive linemen, centers Ben Habern and Brody Eldridge, along with right guard Jarvis Jones on the sidelines with season-ending injuries.

The senior closed out his career with a string of 39 starting assignments, allowing just two assisted sacks during his final two seasons. His 230 knockdown blocks and 22 touchdown resulting blocks were the most by any active Big Twelve Conference offensive lineman since the start of the 2008 season.

Williams attended Longview High School, where he was a unanimous first team All-District selection as a senior. Considered a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, he was rated the 28th-best offensive guard prospect in the nation by that recruiting service. He added All-State second-team and All-East Texas honors in his final year and was an All-District 12-5A pick during his junior campaign. He would conclude his prep career by playing in the Max Emfinger All-Star Game.

Williams earned Freshman All-American second-team accolades from The Sporting News during his first season with Oklahoma in 2006. He started the final seven games at right offensive tackle when Brandon Braxton was lost for the season with a broken leg prior to the Missouri clash. In just 462 snaps, he delivered 75 knockdowns with eight touchdown-resulting blocks.

With Braxton fully recovered, Williams shared right tackle duties with the junior during the 2007 season, starting seven times. He delivered 64 knockdowns as the co-starter, helping the offense average 190.7 yards on the ground and 448.9 yards in total offense per game.

In 2008, Williams started all fourteen games, lining up at left tackle for the season opener before shifting to the right side for the rest of the schedule. He registered a career-high 131 knockdowns and 10 touchdown-resulting blocks for an offense that ranked third in the nation in passing (349.36 yards per game) and total offense (547.86 yards per game).

Williams garnered All-American and All-Big Twelve Conference honors in 2009. He finished third in the voting for league Offensive Lineman of the Year honors. He started the first 11 games at left tackle for an injury-ravaged offensive unit, collecting 99 knockdowns and 11 touchdown-resulting blocks. With several All-American sidelines by assorted injuries, especially on the front wall, the Sooners dipped to 77th in the nation in rushing (134.62 yards per game), but the aerial attacked finished 11th, averaging 289.23 yards.
Analysis

Pass blocking: Improved at left tackle throughout 2009, getting into his pass set quickly and learning to adjust to inside moves. Engulfs most defensive ends on the edge. Bends his knees and anchors very well -- does not get pushed back into the quarterback. Strong initial punch and usually coils back quickly, although he can be out-quicked after initial contact on occasion. Easily absorbs a punch. Reaches at times, instead of moving his feet, to maintain control of secondary rush. Recognizes outside blitzers and usually meets them at the corner of the pocket. Effective cut blocker despite his size. Comes out a little flat in his kick-slide, giving up the corner. Doesn't have elite foot quickness and will sometimes back up instead of moving laterally, but still mirrors most ends without problem.

Run blocking: Fires off the line and dominates when drive blocking. Turns his man whichever way is needed and sustains the block. Only adequate moving his feet on zone blocks, allowing defenders to chase the play. Overextends when trying to punch and looks a bit slow against blitzing linebackers or in space.

Pulling/trapping: Not asked to pull or trap, but is mobile enough to be effective sealing off the MIKE linebacker on strong-side run plays. If moved inside to right guard, would work best in power scheme.

Initial Quickness: Good burst off the snap to run block, and latches onto his man immediately. Sets quickly after his kick slide on both the left and right side, but will be more consistent protecting on the right side.

Downfield: Reaches linebackers and safeties at the second level quickly off the snap. Gets hands into the jersey and moves his feet to drive the man back. Will miss his target or fail to find someone to hit on occasion. Looks for secondary targets to block downfield when needed.

Intangibles: Unselfish player who works hard on the field and in practice. Plays through minor injuries. Returned to school despite being a probable second-round pick in order to return to the BCS championship and complete his education.

This is awesome.

I was definitely disappointed in the pick since I thought we could trade back, but it all comes down to having faith in shanahan. The league called our bluff on Berry. Nothing you can do. Gotta roll with the punches baby. Time to go work Trent. Lets do it boy.

Anyone else shocked by what Denver did yesterday?

Trading up to pick Tebow in the FIRST ROUND?!?! A first round project?!?! Unheard of.

He looked like absolute **** in the Senior Bowl?!?!

I don't even want to think of the **** storm we would be in if we had done this.

Exactly, two lower caliber players and picks won't equate to Trent. We needed to grab an elite OT as they don't come around often as well as the opportunity to get one.

We also have some of the smarter fans in the league. Sometimes I question that though. :pfft: ;)
