View Full Version : Should the NFL keep this new draft format or change it?

Well, the ratings for round 1 were a 30% increase. I am sure tonight's ratings will be higher too.
Should the NFL keep this format? Go back to the old format? Tweak the new format?

I like the new format but I would hold the draft in primetime Friday-Sunday.

Change. New format sucks for the west coast guys.

I thought I'd like it, but I really don't. Kids Tball, or soccer, or other crap, and I just can't veg out on the couch like I usually do on saturdays and sundays and focus only on the draft.
Perhaps the first round friday night, then the rest of the draft sat and sunday?

Yeah, I guess that would work better. I guess it would be impossible to have a primetime draft with 1-3 on Friday without it going into the wee hours of the night.

I like it for the aspect that team's get a bit more time to plan out what they do. I really like that aspect. Not a big fan of the time its on, or the days.

I also don't like that there is only 10 minutes. Maybe I'm just a draft junkie, but the longer it is, 15-20 minutes, just makes it more exciting. It's the anticipation, and as the clock ticks down, it just makes it more dramatic.
Plus the extra time lets me soak in the player that was just picked, do a little research on him, and evaluate if I thought it was a good pick.
Like I said, maybe I need a life, but I just enjoy the drawn out process of it all.

The coverage was pretty terrible on both networks. Other than that, I'm fairly apathetic as to when it's on.

Change to Fri-Sat-Sun layout. I'd like to watch the first round, but my Thursday night NBC sitcoms took priority. I followed online and during commercials while laughing my ass off at The Office and 30 Rock.
Or, go back to just 2 days (1-2-3 on day 1). On day 2, the anchors' give-a-**** tends to go out the window pretty quickly. That's bad in the current format, when a lot of guys who are going to be immediate contributors are getting drafted and Chris Berman is telling body surfing stories and Steve Young is chowing on candy bars instead of talking about the picks.

The only thing I like about it is that I don't have to sit all day. Problem is it was up against some of my favorite shows friday night.

I like the old format. Prefer it being confined to the weekend. And I don't like that I'm stuck in traffic when the 2nd round starts.

I'd rather have it start on Friday too. Preferrably 530 pm for us west coast people. I was at work on Thursday when it started.

Friday Saturday Sunday. And stop showing the pick talking on their phone before the pick is announced.

I was a fan of the late format, but I'll watch either way.

The three day format has to go. It's absurd and drags the process on way to long. Do rounds 1-3 and then 4-7 the next day.

I don't see this format going anywhere- someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think ratings were an all time high and it was a huge success.
That said- I voiced concerns way back when this was announced that it might be hard for us family guys who are trying to get their kids fed and put to bed, etc. to stop everything on a weeknight and watch the draft for 3 hours.
For me, I watched up until the 4th pick then kind of tuned out and did other stuff while the draft was on in the background. I didn't even watch Friday night- probably because the Skins didn't have a pick. I watched for about 30 minutes Saturday morning.
Overall, not bad surprisingly enough. I liked it better than I thought I would. I probably would prefer rounds 1-2 on Friday night with 7 minutes between picks and rounds 3-7 on Saturday

Last year when they said they were changing the draft to prime time, I thought it was a stupid idea. Almost as stupid as changing the Pro Bowl to one week prior to the SB. However, after going through the draft I have decided that this was a smart decision.
Not only did they have the highest ratings for the draft, but they allowed teams more time to think about trades. They had the 2nd most trades then they have ever had on draft day. Saturday got a little monotonous as it took 7 1/2 hours to go through rounds 4-7 and if there was something they could do about the 3rd round to make it a bit shorter that would be the only change I would suggest.

New format should stay. It was a hit with viewers.

I didn't mind it being on Thursday night. It was nice that the Skins picked early so when The Office came on, I didn't have to choose between the two. I really only watched the 1st round. Especially because we didn't have any picks on Friday so it was easy to not pay attention.

YES!
I loved it and hope it stays this way for years! The draft flew by on Thurs night.

I liked it better when I could just dedicate a weekend to the draft. Load up on wings, pizza and drink, have some pals over for an all-day saturday event. It was good times. This whole "goto work -> watch a round -> bed -> work -> watch 2 more rounds -> bed -> watch the rest of the rounds" is for the birds.

I ended up watching a lot less of the draft with this format. I had plans come up Friday Night and watched none of it. And I can't see giving up an entire Saturday just for the later rounds. I only watched the first round. Normally, I watch the entire thing.

I liked the "format", but not the days. I think it should be Friday-Saturday-Sunday instead.

I liked it the first 2 days. The 3rd day sucked...but as an avid NFL fan, I feel like I needed to watch it even though I was bored the entire day.
I think the 3rd day was overkill. Have 1, 2, and 3 on Thursday night. 4-7 on Friday night. And we still have our weekend.

I don't necessarily think that the 3-day draft is a bad idea, but I think it needs to be shifted a day. I think it needs to be round 1 on Friday night, rounds 2-3 on late Saturday afternoon, and 4-7 on Sunday. And I say this as a person who currently has a job that forces him to work Friday/Saturday nights. The whole idea of starting on Thursday really threw me off (and it seems quite a number of others as well), and if they start it on Friday night, it's basically an all-weekend event still. Get out of work Friday, invite some buddies over Friday night/Saturday to watch the bulk of it, and check in on Sunday while doing whatever you neglected around the house the last 2 days. :ols:
Then people don't have to worry about trying to focus at work on Friday in the middle of the draft, and the draft keeps to keep it's "party" feel that it's developed.

I was going to say the same thing. I'd do 1 on Friday, 2-4 on Saturday and 5-7 on Sunday.

Huh? What's the difference?
Personally, I like the new format. The first round on Thursday night. The second and third rounds on Friday night. And 4-7 rounds on Saturday.

THere is no way they put rounds 1 2 and 3 on the same night. No way. You'd be running till like 5 AM or something LOL

I actually watched less of this draft than in years past.
Not that I ever watched much of it to begin with.

I don't care how they show the draft, but I would like them (NFLN, ESPN) to stop beating the draft to death for 2 months prior to it. :beatdeadhorse:

i love the new way!!! i just wish espn and nfln would actually PAY ATTENTION to the current picks past the first round!!!!!!!! if your covering the draft..is it too much trouble to focus on the current pick!!
