View Full Version : Matt Millen apology

Matt Millen playfully called Ron Jaworski a "Polack" and they made him apologize in the next segment. Are you kidding me? TVLand can replay "All in the Family" every day, where Archie uses the word in a derogatory way, but one slip by Millen makes ESPN freak out!

what happened to "sticks and stones (not to mention 300 lb linemen) will break my bones, but words (not to mention stupid crap like this) will never hurt me"?
Political correctness will be the downfall of this country.

All in the Family was filmed during a much different time. You have to be very politically correct now or unemployed.

I just find it funny how hypocritical these executives can be. New shows aren't allowed to have a guy using a racial term, but we can replay the old shows as much as we want because they're classics!

The apology was more uncomfortable than the comment. Mostly just because it was more time Matt Millen spent on the screen.

I saw it live and I was wondering if anyone would say anything about it.
The funny thing here is that Millen made a harmless joke about both himself and Jaworski, who are both pollocks.
It was harmless, but thats the day and age we live in. Political correctness, or die.

FYI: the slur is properly spelled "Polack" in English, from the Polish Polak.

Very true...with everyone worried about being P-C there is no way "All in the Famiily" or "Blazing Saddles" would be made today.

I find it more offensive, as a polack, that one of the worst drafters in league history is covering the draft.

Yeah, I caught the apology today but I didn't know what it was about. I was like wtf was that.

These is a big difference between a scripted show that is intended to make fun of the character's shortcomings and an off the cuff comment on national tv. Personally I don't think it's a big deal but I am not Polish. Everyone knows you can't say stuff like that.

After the apology, Millen should have said, "P.S. I very much apologize to the city of Detroit for the many drafts I effed up and set them up for an 0-16 season. It was my every intention to win at least 2 or 3 games per season and for that I'm sorry."

There are people everywhere today that are LOOKING for things to be offended about. That is the product of a Politically Correct society. No one can laugh at themselves or take a non-threatening or playful joke any more. In today's world, people of all races and ethnicity are supposed to be offended even if they're not sure what was said. It is sad, and it is something that people should be trying to change rather than embrace. But, as one can see by a few posters in this very thread, the brain-washing of the PC Liberals is a long way from being eradicated.

(BTW.. as to the OP, Archie Bunker was supposed to be over-the-top bigoted. That was the point. He illustrated beautifully how ignorant it is by being as prejudiced as that. Archie is one of the greatest characters in TV history.)

I dunno... the guys from southpark, familyguy, cleveland, simpsons, american dad, and on and on and on get away with tons worse everyday.
The major networks pick and choose their battles pretty carefully unless its animated.
Maybe we should animate espn talking heads so everyone can just say whats really on their mind? Bang! there's your next project, you frank caliendo and some racial epithets! Party time!
What a bunch of pansies.:flowers:

He'll never do that. Ever. In fact, he is on record saying that the fans used him as a scapegoat for everything under the sun, which is completely off base and simply laughable.
In Detroit, they need a bad guy. I was a bad guy. I was to blame for the fall of the auto industry and the housing market. Somehow, I had something to do with [Detroit mayor] Kwame Kilpatrick [resigning], although I'm not sure what. But that's what happens when you lose in this game. You give everyone a cheap and easy story to jump on.

Trust me, I know this. I watch the show all the time. I'm only saying that it's totally hypocritical to find the show acceptable to air, with all it's racial slurs, and then force Matt Millen to apologize because he was trying to be funny. Yeah, they're not the same networks etc., but this happens so often that I think I'm find to generalize the popular TV networks. Fictional character or not, it's still the same word they're using.

If I were Jaworski, I'd have asked Millen the same question, based on his years in Detroit... ;)
I kid, I kid
If that got the NFL in a tizzy, they'd have never made it through "Gran Torino."
