Redskins' Derrick Dockery Is A Man On A Mission

Derrick Dockery is on a mission, along with the other members of the much-maligned Washington Redskins offensive line.
That line came under a lot of heat last year. If you asked anyone who followed the team what unit was most responsible for the Redskins’ 4-12 record last year, the O-line would win by acclamation.
Certainly nobody was blaming the individual players as much as the team’s failure to draft and bring along younger players. Still, players take such criticism to heart, and Dockery, speaking to Russ Thaler on Comcast SportsNet’s Washington Post Live, let it be known that things will be different this year.
“There has been a lot of talk about this offensive line with Chris [Samuels] and Randy [Thomas] going down (with season-ending injuries), whether the guys are serviceable or if they’re getting old,” Dockery said. “We just want to come out and prove a point this year.”
“We want to be one of the strengths of this team,” Dockery said. “That’s why we go out to work every day and put forth our best effort.”
Dockery is in his second tour of duty with the Redskins. They drafted him out of Texas in the third round (81st overall) in 2003. He left after the 2007 season when Buffalo offered him a huge free agent deal. Things didn’t work out there, however, and the Bills released him in early 2009. The Redskins welcomed him back to his old spot at left guard.
While Dockery was at Texas, he was teammates with Kyle Shanahan, now the Redskins’ offensive coordinator. Dockery has been impressed by what Shanahan has done so far.
“He’s a great guy, very smart, very bright. He knows what he’s doing,” he said. “I’m just amazed each and every day when we’re out there on the field how wide open our receivers are. I’m just amazed by everything he’s bringing to us.”
