View Full Version : Say it isn't so... Wonder Woman gets a makeover and loses America?

It was bad enough when they took away the eagle... now they take away flag motif entirely. Tis an outrage. I never really like it when they feel the need to update the classics. If it doesn't work anymore then invent something new. The Wonder Woman that was born as part of the group of Super Heroes to battle the Nazis and uphold the ideals of liberty and the American way (even if it's mixed up with ancient Greek stuff) ought to remain. She's DC's Captain America in a weird way... so, is Superman, but she wore the flag proudly and should remain doing so.
Most of these retoolings don't work. Think about all the recent remakes of Robin Hood. They all flop. The Robin Hood story is great. Calling something Robin Hood and ignoring the legend, but keeping the character names always ring false.
Anyway, 20th Century Wonder Woman

Being an old fart... I remember back in the early 70's after Vietnam and during Watergate when Captain America gave up the name Captain America and his trade mark uniform and became "Nomad" in a much darker facad for awhile, so disgusted was Steve Rodgers with the state of the country. It was a relatively powerful editorial statement by Marvel. I was a pretty young kid, but I remember it made an impression on me, and many of my friends about what was going on in the country.
I think what you descibe is something that has always been the difference maker between Marvel and DC comics. DC comic characters rarely if ever evolve (dark knight being one of the few exceptions, even then it was more about a reinterpretation than an evolution). Marvel Comic book hero's evolved and grew with the readers, they changed names, outfits, got married, devorced, graduated from schools, changed jobs, had families and basically allowed them to remain relevent.
I see nothing wrong with Wonder Woman changing her look, I hope the character evolves some too.

Doesn't matter much. The older Wonder Woman had too much of a chicken-fried country cowgirl look anyway. No wonder they finally updated her style.
Maybe DC will find something to actually do with the new character story and look this time!

She's got a red shirt and a blue jacket with white stars on it. Not the classic look but she's still wrapped in the flag.

I agree with those who say the old look was a little over the top. She still looks like Wonder Woman to me.

ha. Didn't even notice the stars at first.
It's just a better looking costume, more streamlined and sensible.

Dude.... bite your tongue... Linda Carter was and remains my first crush... She was Farah, before Farah.

Ms. Carter has hips but zero backside.
I met her a few years back and she is certainly a very attractive woman (still), so I understand the crush. But her costume really is kind of lame.

It wouldn't be the first time that they changed the look of Wonder Woman.

I think the far right look is from the 90s. It might have coincided with Artemis wearing the traditional costume, which I know she did for a while.

I like the new look. Frankly, she should go full dominatrix - that's what she is really all about. :)

I think the new one is sexier than the old one. Her costume is much more believable, like someone I would see on the street.
Well, maybe U Street.

I don't know. That look is just so iconic. It's like stripping Superman of his S or taking the Bat off Batman.
And Bang... your comment is way too unPC. We all blink to the fact that many of the greatest DC heroes are illegal aliens. Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, etc.

Themyscira is pretty far removed from Greece. My understanding of the stars and stripes costume was that it was a goodwill move to the country who made contact with Themyscira. Not to mention that she fought in WWII on the side of the US.
Course, Fox News is posting a somewhat negative slant toward the change.

Personally, I like the costume. It looks more practical while still looking like Wonder Woman.

It's pretty rare when a character's costume for their entire run...it happens but not often.
That being said I think part of the reason that a Wonder Woman movie has never been made is because they can't find anyone willing to wear the costume like Lynda Carter wore.
Overall it's a not a bad change. If they tell interesting stories and make her character interesting the rest will take care of itself.

I don't know about that. I think of a ton of movies where the lead actress wore less or something less comfortable. Heck, the Baywatch babes all wish they got to wear the Eagle.

I don't understand the problem. WWII era values don't sell comics anymore. If kids bought these corny costumes, they wouldn't try to change the character to boost sales.

Generally speaking, not sure why they had to change the look, but since they did:
I think the pants look stupid. For some reason they just don't look like they match the rest of the outfit. They bother me. The top half is pretty cool though.

Point taken...the reason I mentioned it was Kate Beckinsale was up for the part but she menioned that the costume embarassing her daughter was one of the main reasons she turned down the role.
That being said...oh yeah I am sure there are many other actresses who would gladly put on the stared hot pants.

1 - The old outfit was absurd.
2 - The US has itself abandoned the entire old "American way" idealism that comic heroes represented. We've entered the Jack Bauer period in our nations history where ideals have accidentally been killed while questioned on the suspicion that they held information that would have been deemed useful had they had it but there was only one way to be sure and that was by sending those ideals to Syria.

It's not about the Americana. It's about the silly, outdated costume.
You can still hang up posters of her in your room if you want.

Umm. you can still take the colors/style and modernize it to fit your needs. After all. Kosher Ham is the authority on everything. Just ask him.
BTW. I didn't have a Wonder Woman poster. Mmmmmkay? I had Heather Thomas and Farrah hanging on my walls. Get your facts straight.

They did as far as the costume I see. Looks like red, white, blue, and stars to me.
Not the authority, the end all, get your facts straight. :D
Heather Thomas, Bo Derek, among others for me. Yum.
