ES Staff Edit: This is a great, great, great video. The quality is good enough to watch full-screen on your monitor. It is full of facts and images that are very hard to come by. In celebration of the fact that our new general manager is George Allen's son, and in appreciation of the fact that we have a new Head Coach this year, and in recognition of the fact that it's the middle of July with nothing going on, we will stick this thread for a while. It's 44 minutes long, so if you can find some time, sit down and watch this video.
Enjoy.

Just finished watching this video--it was awesome, thanks for the heads up. It intrigued me because I was a became a football fan and a Rams fan in '69 when Allen was their coach, and a lot of those players were brought with him to the Redskins (hence the nick "Ramskins").
I was wondering if Allen was this way w. the Rams (Gabriel, the fearsome foursome, etc.) as well--Rams players gathered together to protest Allen being let go and got him back for the 1970 season, before Rams owner Dan Reeves finally let him go because Allen was "too intense." This film quality was unusually crisp for 1971 I thought. Fascinating show, thanks again.

I just got done watching the whole thing and really enjoyed it. I also was stunned by how clear the footage is. That was my 2nd or 3rd year being a fan. I remember Sonny & Billy both playing just not sure what year that was. Hobble & Wobble all the way.

The 1972 highlights are awesome. I even saw Riggo in a couple of plays for the Jets...including one of Pat Fisher tackling him....cool.
Is that our GM in the white painters hat on the sidelines and locker room shots?

Same here; it didn't seem like '71 footage--very clear.

Without question that 1971 Highlight Film (Three Cheers for the Redskins) is the best Redskins highlight film I have seen.
I really love the inside look at the team and at the way George Allen ran things.
You also do get the sense just how crazy DC got as Allen's Gang began to win and win alot. It must have been fun seeing the Redskins win for the first time in a generation.

That's because it was NFL Films producing it. Key word here: Film
The grainy stuff you find is from broadcasts on video, which degrades over time.
Film can degrade somewhat if you don't take care of it, but NFL films are kept in climate controlled vaults.

I agree. Its the inside look that makes this film special (along with the quality). I think Shanny should show this to the team on the first day of traning camp. Let them see what Real football is all about.

Interesting, we went to the Super Bowl in Allen's first year with the team. Shannahan's first year with the team?

We went in his 2nd year - his first year was 71, Super Bowl year was 72.
Reason to be optimistic about next year though - both Allen & Gibbs went to Super Bowls in their 2nd season here.

One of the vox pops that really spoke to me was the one with the young lady who said "We've never had a winner in anything in Washington," or something along those lines. I mean, think about the state of Washington sports in 1971. The Senators had just left town, we didn't have a basketball or hockey team, and the Redskins had been awful for 20+ years. George Allen brought WINNING back to a city, and introduced winning to a generation that had known nothing but losing.

That was truly incredible. Very nice stuff. I loved Double O. George Allen was clearly all about winning, and it worked. The video was very clear as well. I loved how the players bought into his system. You know Bruce will do everything he can to bring success to the Skins just like his father. Very exciting and eerily similar to what Shannallen are trying to do with the Skins, and I think they will succeed just like George Allen did. All the players need to do is buy into what is going on with the Skins now.

That was fantastic. Playing with enthusiasm where i come from is called playing with heart. Something that can't be teached, but an oppenent or teammates greatest strength. I hate seeing players on the sidelines during the 4th quarter getting crushed or after a loss laughing it up and joking around. Drives me nuts, and drove me nuts when i played sports and people on my team did that although it was rare.

Sounds like Cleveland area sports now. Man i would've hated to have been born into sports there.

I agree that the 1971 film is much better than the 1972 one, which covers the playoffs decently but that's about it.
I remember when ESPN Classic started as Classic Sports Network in 1995 and they had a "Washington Week" and they showed the 1969 highlight film, among others. It was pretty cool with the psychedelic music and all that.
I hope Shanahan and George's son bring us back to AT LEAST those good times of the 1970s, because it seems like a generation since we've had something to seriously cheer about with this team.

I saw it last year when it came out on the NFL channel. It helped me explain to my wife why I became a Redskins fan back in 1972. She loved it as much as I did. Classic.

Agreed, it should also be noted that film, even back 50-60 years, was HD quality. It's the transfer process that degrades it. As an example, the History Channel had a documentary, WWII in HD, that was crystal clear. With the technology today, you can transfer from the original film to a video file without degrading the video quality.
Btw, Good video!

Yes, I believe the Senators did use the curly W. And the player wearing the cap was Sonny J!
