Mike Shanahan took time out from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship on Thursday in Lake Tahoe to discuss Terrell Owens and Albert Haynesworth -- two high-profile names linked to the Washington Redskins. And the coach didn't mince words on each player's situation.
When asked about the possibility of reuniting Owens with former teammate Donovan McNabb as a Redskin, Shanahan told New York's WFAN-AM (via The Washington Post) that "I made a commitment relative to T.O., that we were not gonna go in that direction."
Shanahan also was asked about Haynesworth, who has lost over 30 pounds as he prepares for the start of training camp -- an interesting development from a player who has been vocal about his unhappiness with the team's switch to a 3-4 defense and has stayed away from offseason activities.
"I talked to Albert about a month after I got the job and sat down with him and I said if he did not want to be part of the Washington Redskins, that I'd let him go," Shanahan told WFAN. "I wouldn't trade him, I'd let him go to another football team. But if he did take the check for $21 million, I expected him to play any position that we thought would be in the best interest of the Washington Redskins, be it nose tackle, defensive end or if we wanted to play him at free safety, but we expected him to come in in great shape and do the things that he's capable of doing.
"And hopefully he does that. He hasn't shown up for minicamp, so guys are gonna be looking at him, to see what type of shape he's in, if he's willing to do the little things the right way. And time will tell. If he is buying in, and he is in great shape, we know what type of talent he is, and we know he can help our football team win."
Several of Haynesworth's teammates have been outspoken about the lineman's absence from workouts. When Shanahan was asked Thursday if he was concerned about the players' reaction to Haynesworth's return, he said: "You know, I don't even worry about that. I want guys that are gonna come in and work extremely hard, and hopefully Albert does that."
"Does he need to do that with the rest of his teammates? I think he does. I think he's got to come in in great shape. People have to know that he's gonna do what's in the best interests of our organization to help us win. We're gonna play him at a position that we think will help us win, and hopefully he can play at that high level, because he's very talented. And hopefully he makes that commitment when he comes in."

Maybe some of those who are STILL clamoring for T.O will ACCEPT that he will NOT be donning a Redskins uniform in 2010. Shanny has spoken and so shall it be:D.

Right now I'd say you are 100% correct. However, if there is an injury to Moss, Kelly or Thomas during camp then this may have legs again.

Translation: There is no way that ****ing headcase will be joining the 'Skins.
seriously though, TO is like adding a match to a powder keg drenched in gasoline, with a hint of C4. He would have had our locker room divided in a matter of months, do you think TO and Portis could co-exist. Seriously the confluence of those two egos would take out DC and Northern Virginia in a massive pile of prima donna

TO will probably end up in Tennessee - he and Jeff Fisher have been longtime good friends, from what I understand. The Titans have alot of vets in their locker room, and TO is "good" for one year, so it will be a good mix short-term.

Don't know about everyone else, but a sigh of relief came over me when I read this.

He made a "commitment".
Who wants to bet that no matter what everyone says to the media, that was a promise to McNabb.

I love posts like this.
Polo3 knows better than Mike Shanahan when an old FA WR, who nobody else in the league wants to sign, should be a Redskin.
T.O. will end up on some team's roster during training camp, play in some spot duty this year, and retire immediately following the season. He's just not a big time WR anymore.

Maybe. Maybe not. Could be to the front office to try and push Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly this season as their "put up or shut up" time without any outside interference from a guy like T.O.
It could be anything really. I wouldn't read too much into Shanahan's wording there. It's a couple of weeks until training camp opens and T.O.'s still sitting at his house without a contract. So it seems like 31 other teams made a similar "commitment."

True enough. I don't think his career is as over as you do, and I do think he'll end up on a roster and be effective enough. No where near his old self, but not enough to actually retire after the year, either.

Well, like I said, we're only a couple of weeks away from training camp for this season, and T.O.'s still sitting around unsigned. So demand isn't that high for him right now.
By the start of next season, he'll be 37 years old, and it's pretty unlikely at this point that he'll be coming off of a noticeably productive year. I don't see what big opportunities he'll have next year.
The NFL has largely moved on. The flashy names now are guys like Fitzgerald, Marshall, Andre Johnson, and Roddy White, with young guns like Crabtree, DeSean Jackson, Steve Smith in New York, and even Dallas replacing T.O. with a highly touted 1st round pick in Dez Bryant.
It's not just T.O. either. Torry Holt's only a couple of years removed from an 1,100 yard and 7 TD season, and he's playing for basically the vet minimum right now in New England, hoping to just make the final roster this year. Randy Moss is probably going to be released by the Patriots after this season, and I doubt we'll see a lot of teams fighting for him.

When I first joined up here, I never thought I would see more than a very slight minority calling the decision to keep Terrell Owens out of D.C. a bad one. Times change I suppose.

I swear, if TO comes to DC, I'm going to buy 500 bucks worth of TO jerseys, get a catapult, drive down the street to redskins park and light those ****ers on fire and toss them onto the practice field. You heard it here first.

T.O. = Never a Redskin? GOOD!
A.H. = 2010 Defensive Player of The Year as a Redskin? BETTER!
