This past year i have started really getting into the Blues. As some of you know i went to Clapton's Guitar Festival in Chicago about a month ago, and that really opened my eyes!

What are some your favorite Blues players, and what are some that are not as well known? Post youtube videos or whatever else you want to.

My favorites are: Buddy Guy, BB King, SRV, Clapton, Lang just to get started...

One that i heard in Chicago that really stood out was: Gary Clark Jr (goes good for us Skins fans huh )

WIllie Dixon rolls on the bass in this tune.

This one is audio only, but is one of the best examples of the purest blues. Muddy, Willie Dixon, and a young Buddy Miles acoustic record from 1963

I have had a blues obsession since I was in my late teens. Beth and I took the kids to the Lloyd's blues festival in Hershey PA to see Tommy Castro, BB, and Buddy Guy, among others. The boy was 7 and our daughter was 3. Got him started down the right path of musical taste, and at 19 it still sticks. The daughter? Not so much.

If you guys are ever in Chicago, while Buddy Guy's Legends is a good place..... You have to go here. http://www.kingstonmines.com/flash/main.html
The place is amazing. It has hosted some of the greatest blues musicians EVER. Two stages so when one band goes on break, you walk around the back into the other stage area where another band is getting ready to go.

BTW Derek Trucks is the man! Saw him tour with Clapton and Robert Cray last time around in Philly

I'm real pumped. Didnt know it was his B-day. Should be a good show, haha.

The only two times I've seen him was opening for BB at DAR constitution hall, and I saw him last summer at Wolf Trap. So this will be the smallest place I've seen him.

Maybe I'll take some video and post in this thread.

I saw CD when that LP was released and a few other times. Quite a player.

Willie Dixon wrote a lot of songs that became hits by British rock bands. He also was on most of the Chess recordings composing, cowritting, and playing bass. enjoy this high quality stereo recording from his LP "I am the Blues"
Highly recommend that CD for your collection

Willie Dixon. I still remember going to see Willie Dixon & the Chicago Blues Allstars in a small arena when I was a freshman at college (Michigan State, 1984). My friend and I screamed for them to play Spoonful (which Cream made famous) and they did. Awesome.

Led Zeppelin did some of his music as well.

The blues is something I like, but really need to buy more of. I have very little blues music. This one album I have called Martin Scorcese Presents The Blues is pretty cool, though. And I have a couple of Allman Brothers albums, but other than that I have no blues music in my collection.
Anyone recommend some blues albums to start a collection with?

If you're dipping your toes into blues for the first time, I wouldn't start with the Delta musicians. They are important and there is a lot of brilliant Delta blues music. But it's not accessible for an ear that's not accustomed to very old and very poor production qualities.

But if anyone wants to check out some Delta blues beyond the Robert Johnson and Son House recordings, here are some of my favorite artists:

- Charlie Patton (kind of the father of the genre, one of the first male blues stars)
- Lonnie Johnson (brilliant guitarist with a Jazz background, probably the most technically skilled guitar player from the genre)
- Tommy Johnson
- Blind Lemon Jefferson
- Mississippi John Hurt
- Willie Brown
- Reverend Gary Davis
- some more I'm forgetting about right now.

I've always liked the Piedmont musicians too. In general, I like the country picking style.

These guys are pre-electrification of the blues for the most part, mostly recording in the 30s.

I really like Elmore James as kind of a master of slide. He recorded in the 50's IIRC and plays the electric guitar. He's not my favorite but he's really good and really important.

One of my favorite bluesmen of all is Lightnin' Hopkins. So much personality, such a voice, terrific guitar player too. He's extremely listenable. I prefer country blues musicians to the guys who play electric instruments. He was the rare old school bluesman who was successful recording in the 50's and early 60's before Alan Lomax dug up Son House.

Keb' Mo' is a pretty widely appreciated contemporary bluesman from Compton who plays in a more traditional style. He's a hell of a guitar player too and I've got a couple of albums where he plays on a Dobro that are awesome.
