View Full Version : Why is it that the NFL is incapable of scouting QBs?

Starters of note that were scouted or regarded well enough by the NFL:
Tony Romo - undrafted
Matt Cassel - 7th round draft pick
Matt Schaub - 3rd round, traded
Tom Brady - We all know this story.
Drew Brees - 2nd round pick... but this dude was a free agent people didn't want! Is there a better free agent singing ever?
David Garrard - 4th round pick
Matt Hasselbeck - 6th round, traded
Jake Delhomme - undrafted, NFL europe (this guy dueled Brady in a super bowl!)

Already we have 8 starters. Every year we see the first round of the draft fall in love with a QB and yet 1/4 of the league features a starting QB that not only wasn't a 1st round draft but was at some point grossly under rated.

Let's not forget Kurt Warner... no one even wanted this guy and he went on to have arguably be the best post season QB ever. He's out of football now of course but damn, how is one of the best ever go unnoticed.

There aren't that many "great" QBs to begin with, which is why a team that is lucky enough to find one stays a winner for a long time (see the Colts and Pats for example)

So much goes into the QB position, in particular that mental makeup. Heath Shuler could have been the greatest athlete to play QB for the Redskins if he could learn a playbook. If Michael Vick could read a D he would be unstoppable. But somehow a 10th round guy like Brad Johnson wins a Superbowl

You take your best guess. I mean you put your trust in the QB who was most successful in college based on what he's done. A team logically will always with a QB who has won a BCS championship or a major Bowl win rather than some QB from like Delaware University. Even if the Delaware QB ends up being the better QB.

Too bad Raiders didn't give Colt a starting chance or he would have been on your list as well. :silly:
