View Full Version : Are the 2010 Redskins linebackers the best we've had in years?

Im really happy with our linebacking corps of Fletcher, Orakpo, Mcintosh, and Carter.
The last time I think we had a very formidable linebacking crew was when we had Arrington, Trotter, and Jesse Armstead.
Can anyone recall a time over the past 20 or so seasons when we've had a better group of talent at the position?

I wouldn't go so far as to say Trotter was ever good with us. More like a large disappointment who had decent moments (see ARE)
Clearly the group we have now is the best we've had in awhile though, probably as a whole they are the best group we've had in the past 10 years and it helps that this group has stayed together for little while now, say roughly the last 4 years we've had the same unit.
I'd say our most over rated LB we've had was Derek Smith, lot of tackles but no leadership by quick comparison to Fletcher.

The fact that we have Carter playing LB makes me want to say no.
I can't come up with a better squad off the top of my head though, so I can't really disagree :ols:
Carter is a great guy and a hard worker but he's a 4-3 DE plain and simple.
Plus, doesn't Alexander get more playing time in his spot anyways?

I'd agree in that Trotter was an overall disappointment with us, but I did think he was pretty solid. Arrington (01-03) and Armstead I thought were great for us

You guys are crazy lol. Mcintosh is a horrible inside linebacker he gets beat all the time, in fact i bet all the teams see what side he is on and runs to that side or passes to that side. He was a good 4-3 linebacker but a bad 3-4 backer. Alexander helps this defense big time, but our best line backer of the last ten years was Antonio Pierce the guy was a beast, and has a superbowl ring to prove it.
This is a horrible linebacker core just look at the stats, one of the worst defenses in the league, you got to be kidding me with this question.

I disagree but can't really argue at the same time, I was mad we got rid of him but he made me hate him as soon as he left. I don't know about beast either, LaVar Arrington was a beast.
Fletcher > Pierce, superbowl ring to prove it...;)

Fletcher is damn good but pierce was a young up and comer who stuck his nose in every play. Youre probably right arrington and fletcher are real good, but i think Mcintosh is our weak spot playing as an inside backer, he gets picked on in games bad what do you think.

McIntosh is playing out of position, hes not an ILB in a 3-4 or 4-3. I like him playing on the outside of a 4-3. Rocky McIntosh is another player I used to be down on but besides his rookie season he's been solid and I like him. I think hes doing a decent job but hes undersized for the position we want him to play. I'm comfortable with him at the position I think he can hold his own unlike Andre Carter playing outside.

I don't like Carter at LB, he is a 4-3 DE and everybody in the league knows it. I like watching Orakpo, Fletcher, McIntosh and Alexander out there however.

What are you guys talking about, Carter really hasn't played LB for us in weeks. It's largely been Orakpo, Alexander, Fletcher, and McIntosh when we go 3-4. Carter only comes in when we go nickel and have four down linemen.
Anyway, I don't know if it's the best. This is our first time using the 3-4 so it's a little odd to compare having 4 LBs regularly to just 3. I'm really loving Alexander though. I still don't know if he's a real full time starter in this league, but he plays with so much fire and heart it's hard not to start him. And I think Orakpo is going to be a dominant 3-4 edge rusher(assuming we stay in that D)for the next 10 years.

Trotter & Armstead were never that good as Redskins. Armstead was too old and had little left in the tank, and Trotter was too one-dimensional for the system we ran. Both were another example of having a poor coach/gm combo of evaluating talent and how they would fit.
Trotter was a great LBer vs. the run, but that's it. The Eagles played him to his strength, on run blitzes and to shoot gaps. When the Redskins signed him, we tried to use him in coverage, which he was horrible at. Then he went back to the Eagles and was instantly good again.
It was pathetic.

I'm hesitant to put Carter in there, at least not for now. Those LBs plus the very solid secondary make this defense rocks. I can't recall when is the last time we lead the league in takeaways. Must be ages ago. We just need to capitalize in those takeaways more effectively.

Alexander is the other LB now. Carter is back on the line during passing downs.

I liked our LBs in 2000, with Derek Smith, Shawn Barber, and Lavar

I always liked Shawn Barber to, we've been losing some "core skins" for years. Guys you dont let get away.

Our inside linebackers are both much more suited for the 4-3. London Fletcher is smart enough that he can be effective but he isn't your prototypical 3-4 middle backer. Fletcher is our best linebacker since Ken Harvey. Personally I think the best linebacker corps we've had in the last few years was 2004 when we had Pierce in the middle flanked by Marcus Washington and Lemar Marshall. Those guys were all over the field. A lot of people only remember the Marshall from 2005 and 2006 but he was really, really good at OLB in 2004.
