Wade Phillips wasn't the only person to get the boot by the Dallas Cowboys (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys) on Monday. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of fans, couldn't access the team's website because the team reportedly forgot to renew the registration for dallascowboys.com.
The domain name expired Sunday night after the Cowboys got drubbed 45-7 by the Packers, according to a Dallas Morning News report. The team quickly re-upped, but there was a lag before a generic ad for Network Solutions reverted to the Cowboys site. For some fans, that downtime encompassed the firing of coach Wade Phillips, easily the biggest story of the Cowboys season.
Whois.com, a public database, lists the registrant of the site as the Cowboys and gives Jerry Jones Jr.'s e-mail address, according to the Dallas Morning News. The son of the team's owner and general manager, who fired Phillips on Monday, was not available for comment, the newspaper reported.
A shame a Redskins fan did not get the domain name before the Cowboys could re-up :ols:

Why did you link to creating a thread in ATN? Are you being an instigator? :ols:

Can't claim this as my own joke, but:
The Cowboys are so bad even their website has quit on them.

Adding insult to injury is always okay with me when it comes to the Cowboys.

Unfortunately, there is like a 90 day grace period before you can actually buy an expired domain name. It doesn't matter though in this case - even if someone had managed to grab it, their legal team would be all over you & you'd have to give it up.

I remember reading a case a few years ago where a kid got Wal-Marts domain name (or maybe it was K-Mart). He was 12, and had the backing of his parents, but he won the case.
Granted, he purchased the domain before the company did, it did not have anything to do a re-up. Not sure if that makes a diffrence.
EDIT: I think said company went with another site just to spite the kid, so in the end he got no money.:ols:

It used to be possible to grab and "squat" on a domain, but recent changes have made that pretty tough. As long as you can show precedent that you own the name, you'll get it in the end. Interestingly enough, I forgot who it was, but a celebrity won a case over this as well.
They can hold out for a bit if they are in a relatively lawless country, but ultimately the IANA will release the domain to you regardless of their location provided that you have the legal paperwork to back it up.
I used to do a handful of these a month.

The fail is strong with the cowboys. If only I could have snagged it and redirected it to some gay cowboy porn site. permanently...
