View Full Version : Over/Under on Sam and Sonny?

I'm guessing they both have jobs as long as they want (and Sonny is still pretty good). But Sam could be tough to listen to next year -- reminds me of Ralph Kiner's final days in the Mets booth.

First of all, its Sonny and Sam :silly:
Second, Sam has to go...yesterday. With all due respect considering what he's done for this franchise he is absolutely horrible on the radio right now. I don't know if its age or perhaps concussions that he suffered when he played but the guy has no clue what he's talking about.
I'm not trying to mock the guy, I honestly feel bad for him because listening to him is painful.

Sonny's fine but Sam?
Sam needs to hang it up. He sounds like Grandpa Simpson trying to describe the game.
Sam: "Hey!! What's London doing all the way down there??"
Sonny: "He's covering the tight end"
Sam: "He's the middle linebacker!! He needs to be in the line hittin'!! He's not a safety!!"
Sonny: "That's his assignment Sam. Larry, can ya help me out here??"
Sam: "I like ice cream. Where's the Good Humor man at??"
Larry: "Brandon Banks is back to receive the punt...."

I was listening today wondering if it would be the last time I heard the two together. I've known nothing but Sonny and Sam on Redskins radio in my 33 years, but Sam's time should be up. All things must come to an end. The poor old fella is an embarassment these days. Sonny is still awesome as always.

Well since I'm usually watching it on TV, I thankfully don't have to hear them much... I do have a radio in my bathroom that comes on with the lights so I guess it's fitting that I only hear them when I'm taking a dumpsky. They even make that painful

I had to listen to the Jax game on the road and Sam is unbearable to listen to. Sonny isn't very good either but I wouldn't be surprised if Sam isn't brought back.

Yes. It's hard to listen to Sam, but can't imagine Sonny going on without him. Then again, I couldn't imagine Sonny and Sam going on without Frank either. I would like to suggest that it's time for Larry to step aside. There is something in his voice that sounds like he has a head cold of massive proportions. It tends to get on my nerves.

I listened to the very end of the game today on the radio and I felt like Larry and Sonny just let Sam talk and then they rarely comment on it. And if they do, its correcting him.

A few things.
1. As long as I've been listening to them, I still have trouble differentiating between Sonny and Sam. They really do sound like the same guy.
2. Sam Huff is a great human being and a legend of the game. We all love him. He needs to step down. I had to listen to the game today in the car... it was just awful. Poor Sam is completely senile. He doesn't even know the rules of the game. (no, seriously. He doesn't).
3. Sonny is a great Redskin, but he's an extremely lazy broadcaster. I can forgive Sam on some level simply because he's lost his mind... but it's clear that Sonny does no prep prior to gameday. He just shows up with the team and talks about the game to thousands of people listening in.
4. Larry Michael is not popular I know but among the three he is the only professional.
Wouldn't it be refreshing to have a broadcast Team that actually does pre-work and doesn't just wing it on gamedays? A broadcast Team that can point out interesting backstories on players, coaches, etc... or share interesting points of view based on research and preparation for the broadcast? That actually exists you know...

Replace them. Bring back Frank for a game and give all three a place on the Ring of Honor. Make a big bruhaha over it and move on with some new announcers.

Thanks for saying this. I've always found the "Sonny is still sharp" arguments weak. Yes, Sonny is aware that there is a game going on and can line up his comments with what is happening on the field. But I haven't heard hims say anything interesting or insightful in years. Sam was always a much better broadcaster; he could actually explain why certain plays work or don't work. Sonny is of the "They need to pass the ball better" or "The line needs to step up here" school of stating the obvious.

The Giants actually have a pretty good setup using former players of more recent vintage -- Carl Banks in the booth, Howard Cross doing the sideline work. Both guys are candid and are not afraid to be critical of the team on the air. I'd like to see the Redskins try something like that, but I don't know what players from the first Gibbs era could do the job without infuriating Snyder.

I'd just like to point out that Joe Theismann and John Riggins are 61. And they are always the first names mentioned when the discussion turns to replacing Sonny and Sam. The First Gibbs Era was a long, long, long time ago. Hiring those guys as broadcasters would mean more senior moments in a few years.
Is there no one who was on the team in the last 15 years that could qualify for the job? How about Phillip Daniels moving to the broadcast booth in a year or two? He might be pretty good at it.
Also, there is no law that says you need a three-man booth. I find the three man booth somewhat distracting in radio anyway since the play by play man has to do so much more.
Larry Michael and Phillip Daniels for 2012? Put Fred Smoot on the sidelines.
Boom!

They need a 100% new radio booth that is only 2 guys. 3 is just too many. Find a play by play guy that can speak intelligently on what's happening with maybe a few general comments to get the color guy rolling.
Doesn't need to be an ex-player. But if they insist on that, then it doesn't need to be a HOFer. Just an ex-Skin who understands play calling and can explain how a play just happened based on assignments and certain packages.
I'd be fine with a Phillip Daniels. But they would need to pair him with somebody much better than Larry (who's below average IMO).
Smoot on the sidelines would be funny.

If Sonny and Sam decide to mail it in. I think Joe Theismann is pretty much a lock to take over, they may pair him with Doc Walker or Jon Riggins if they want a 3 man crew.
Hokie_Skinz
January-4th-2011, 09:44 AM
You folks honestly think Riggins would be a candidate for the job? The man who said Snyder (who would be his boss as an official member of the Redskins broadcast team) had a 'dark heart'. I think JT is a serious candidate, but they need to look younger if they want a long term team like we have had with Sonny and Sam.
DG wouldn't be too bad, young enough, beloved enough. I really can't think of anyone on the offensive side outside of JT though.

I don't know. It's the local radio broadcast. It doesn't need to be a highly professional product. I've heard the Dan Patrick/Theismann idea. That just strikes me as a boring ESPN combo. A lot of "We talked to Trent Williams yesterday and he said he's never been more excited about the talent around him" type of bs.
When I had Sirius, my favorite color commentator was Ron Wolfley from the Cardinals. Nothing he says makes any sense, but he says it like a Pro Wrestler from the 1970s. He's awesome.
I love the idea of Smoot as a sideline reporter. I think he would be a bit much for a whole game, but I think it would be endlessly entertaining to give him one minute twice a quarter to say whatever the hell was on his mind - someone's ugly shoes, what the cheerleaders are wearing, how the team meal was, who is doing the best trash talking, etc.
With Sam and Sonny being a combined 314 years old and Larry Michael shilling Papa Johns every two seconds, the Skins' broadcast has lost its sense of fun.

Darrel Green? He never impressed me during his "show" with Czabe and Pollin. I have a feeling he would be one of those color commentators who bring everything back to how he would have done something. Lavar and B Mitch do the same thing. It's never good when the color guy has a huge ego.

Yeah, I was going to bring up Jeff Bostic. Maybe Ken Harvey as well. I love the idea of Smoot on the sidelines, and as much as I liked Darrell Green, I just don't think he would be a good broadcaster.
I agree with most, as many memories many of us have and as much as we love Sam, it is time to hang up the mic. I still love hearing Sonny, but as has been pointed out, it is not really hard-hitting broadcasting. I honestly would still like Sonny to be on the air, but replacing Sam with someone younger. Maybe Harvey, maybe someone like Charles Mann.

Anybody hear anthing about our radio booth? I guess it is business as usual correct?
I have always felt that the insistence of keeping the group together is a direct reflection of how poorly managed this team is/was. It is a real shame. I also grew up turning off the TV and putting on Sonny/Sam/Frank, but jesus, enough is enough.
I almost feel lke keeping the group together, espcially Sam (god bless'em and I mean no disrespect) is an insult to my intelligence.
Snyder, to a fault, is being way too loyal.

I haven't been able to tolerate listening to the game on the radio for years now. It's an insult to my intelligence and these guys should have been forced into retirement long ago. Sam was on Sirius NFL radio with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan a couple weeks ago. They asked Sam what position the Redskins need to improve the most and he said RB. This was before the trade for the 2nd pick and they were shocked by the answer. They tried to talk some sense into him but he wanted none of it. He just kept talking about how the Redskins should find another Riggo. He sounded insane.

I actually got to meet Sam at an autograph siging in New Jersey. He is like you all say losing it a bit. His handler was kinda getting PO'd at him. Constantly had to keep him on track wewith what he was doing etc... He is a very nice guy though. Shared a couple funny stories, told me that he thought the Skins should skip over Manning and draft a QB. Mentioned that the last time we did that was Joey T. He said no one really liked him though which made me laugh. Got love getting older!!!

Apple pie and ice cream. Turkey day and football. Peanut butter and Jelly. Batman and Robbin. Garfield and Odie. Unique things that just go together and scream America. And Sonny and Sam are RIGHT up there on that list when it comes to the the B&G.
If Sam goes, then Sonny goes. You can't have one without the other. Sam Huff may have gotten forgetful with age and have a big disconnect between his brain and his mouth (Ok, A LOT forgetful); but he's still yin to Sonny's yang. They play off each other, and one wouldn't work without the other. Their a Redskins institution as recognisable to many as any coach, player uniform in Redskins lore. For 34 season's they've lived every down with us as they've broadcast our mutual love into our homes.
If you want to make a complete break, and go with a completely new broadcasting team, then be my guest. But you can't have Sonny J and A N Other doing the analyst gig. It's not Sonny and Joe. Or Sonny and Mike. Sonny and Art. It's Sonny and SAM. You can't have one without the other.
And regardless of what anyone thinks about Sam Huff @ 77, I hope it stays that way until BOTH decide to hang it up together.

Agreed. I had to listen to quite a few games on the radio last season and it was just tough to listen to their broadcast. Hopefully, Sunny knows what's up and calls it quits for the both of them. What the Redskins should do is offer them a spot on like a pregame or postgame wrap up tv show and then they can spend the games watching it and not having to do a show. Also, I assume Sam has children, If I'm his son I definitely get him to call it quits this year. Honestly, I'm surprised it didn't happen last year.

Sonny is still the best out there. Sam is getting a little....senile but I wouldn't replace him for anything in the world. Those two still crack me up every week. Sonny gets such attitude by the end of the season having to explain the same rule over and over. I love them both, That said, they are getting up there and will eventually retire (hopefully they won't go out like Frank). I like Doc Walker, he would be the Sonny replacement, over flowing with knowledge of the game specializing on offense. Now Sam's replacement they could play it safe with someone like Charles Mann or go outside of the box and choose Dexter. He would bring so much life to the broadcasts and I think Doc could keep him somewhat reeled in. I just wish the station in RVA wasn't so awful.

I love Sonny & Sam and what they have done for the organization, but it is time. Red Zebra just re-up Sonny and Sam for 2012-2013... wow. I think Sam really does needs to take a lesser role.
EDIT:
Here is the 980 Facebook status:
RED ZEBRA BROADCASTING announces today that they have re-signed Hall of Famers Sam Huff and Sonny Jurgensen for the 2012-13 football season on the Washington Redskins radio network. Sonny and Sam have been broadcasting Washington Redskins games together since 1981. A span of over 600 broadcasts, including 25 playoff games and all three Super Bowl victories.
Larry Michael will continue as the Washington Redskins radio network’s play by play voice and former Redskin Rick “Doc” Walker will provide commentary from the sidelines. The Washington Redskins radio network’s 20 game pre and regular season schedule will begin on August 9th, 2012 in Buffalo and conclude December 30th, 2012 at Fed Ex Field against Dallas. Marquee matchups include the season opener, September 9th, 2012 in New Orleans, and a Thanksgiving Day broadcast November 22nd, 2012 in Dallas.
Larry Michael and Sonny Jurgensen will broadcast all 20 games. Due to the rigors of travel, Sam Huff has decided to broadcast 12 games. All 10 home games at Fed Ex Field and two road games, October 21st, 2012 against the New York Giants and November 22nd, 2012 against the Dallas Cowboys. Sam Huff has been a member of the Washington Redskins radio network since 1975.
The Washington Redskins Radio Network can be heard on 33 stations, including their flagship, ESPN980 (WTEM-AM) in Washington DC.

I would think/hope they'd try to keep an offensive player and a defensive player. Theismann would be way too much for me, but I barely listen as I am at all the home games. I'd love for us to have a guy like Smoot do it for the defense, but he isn't a Redskins great. Charles Mann showed more and more on the tv broadcasts last year, BMitch now works for 980, Rick Walker has been waiting for his shot. So there are no shortage of greats that are in the wings waiting.
We'll know soon, because the first away game is Aug 8 at Buffalo. (that's if they stick to a three man team on the road).
Maybe they will do a bunch of guest announcers and see who does best. Who knows.

But when it's time to make the change, I say put them both out to pasture at the same time and give it to Joe Theismann and Doc Walker

Sam seems to be like that sick dog , and the family doesn't have it in them to put him down. You could have a haph hour special on his blooper lines from just one game alone. Its not even funny how bad he is anymore, just plain sad. Keep Sonny, Larry is a tool but he does the play by play good. And I think it is time to take Doc Walker off the sideline and into the booth. IMO

i really like doc's sideline reporting. so much, in fact, that i'd prefer he stayed away from the booth and stayed on the sidelines.
also, theisman wouldn't let sonny get a word in edgewise. so, i don't want him in the booth either.
i'd be okay with a two-man booth with just sonny and larry

Sonny & Sam have earned the right to call it quits on their own terms. Yeah I know Sam hasn't been good over recent years, but the poor product on the field exacerbates it. When the team becomes a winner again some of Sam's in the booth deterioration won't even be focused on.
Whenever that day comes next in line should be Doc and Theisman. They both have the most broadcasting experience out of anyone else. Doc can analyze the defensive side of the ball, he always done that well as part of his whole broadcasting career

I used to turn off the TV sound and listen to the radio broadcast; but the last two seasons the radio has been so out of sync with the TV here in the Ocean City area that I have not been able to do that. Sam may have got worse than what I recall from a couple years ago; but I mainly enjoyed them because they were real fans and made me feel like I was watching the game with fans who also knew the game. I wish I could listen to them on the radio like I used to.

Everyone use to turn down the TV and listen to the radio broadcast. I remember it well as a kid growing up. Those games with the radio on were a big part of childhood Sunday afternoons. You're right though, it's nearly impossible to do anymore with the way things are so out of sync. My own kids aren't familiar with the experience.
To me, Sonny and Sam are like family. I'll let them stay as long as they wish. They've earned it. Besides, you have to admit the element of humor that has been introduced with their older age. They don't pretend to be spring chickens, and they are humble enough to laugh at themselves. The day of their last broadcast together will be bittersweet. You better believe I'll be listening.

I stilllisten to the radio call either while watching the game live, or on the tv when the team isonthe road. Ihate listening to former cowboys call a redskins game.....especially when we r playing dallas.
That said....i enjoy listening to sonny.....but agree with many posters about sam.....his comments are sometimes so far removed from what is happening on the field.....he is almost like a cheerleader only. Hahaha, Riggins, Joey T and Larry Michael? Two guys that are never wrong, one of whom unrealistically picks the Redskins in every game, and then Larry, who I like more and more each year, who is as much a company man as I've ever seen and doesn't like to upset anyone. That would be listening gold!
Didn't Joey to just sign up with NFL network last year? Would they allow him to call Redskins games? I'm sure he'd rather call the games, but still...

Yeah, that's very true, hahaha. But you'd have to wonder what a booth of BMitch and Smoot would sound like. My guess is by the end of the first half they'd both be so deep into country slang that you wouldn't understand a word they were saying until there was a penalty they disagreed with.
I still think next up should be Ric Walker and Charles Mann with Larry Michael. I'd also love to see Kevin Sheehan take over for Larry Michael...

Very good point.
The sync problem is a very big issue and if "Redskins Radio" wants to have any shot at anyone listening, other than for the morbid entertainment listening to the train wreck that is the current booth, they must fix this problem. The whole selling point back in the day was "turn down the tv and turn up Sonny, Sam and Frank". Well right now and for the last several seasons, this cannot be done due to a serious sync problem. So even if the booth is top of the line (Buchantz, Joey T and Doc), most people will not listen because it's either too ahead or too behind the television.
I know some people try and do the DVR thing and delay it and try to sync it that way, but most are not going to do that. It is the responsibilty of the broadcaster to engineer a solution, not each and every viewer/listener.
So they can "limit" Huff or change the whole booth, it doesn't matter until the sync issue is fixed they will not have very many listeners.

The radio booth needs a 100% turnover and downsize to a 2 man booth with one person on the field.
Its funny, on 980 they were having former Skins call into the Sports Fix. Guys like Mark Rypien and even Tony Banks spoke very well and cleanly about details of the game. Coverages, protections, routes, etc. I know Tony Banks was here for a cup of coffee but when he called in to talk about the Marty season, I was impressed.
Ideally I'd like them to go young when upgrading the play by play guy and then after a guy like Ryp to be the analyst guy. For sideline, I know people like Doc Walker even though I'm not a huge fan of the whole nickname thing he tries to do. But, could live with him doing that still.
Today Sonny is fine, I still think the booth needs a complete overhaul. Maybe keep Sonny to do post-game interviews or something.

It's not really there fault dude. It's everyone's fault. None of the systems jive/talk to each other.
If you sync your radio and let it ride out, within 5 minutes the radio could be as much as 45 seconds ahead of the tv or 45 seconds behind without touching anything. It's just weird. But I agree, those days were awesome when you could do that! Even then it was a little off but you didn't care.

I've actually had no problems with Sirius' feed (the only reason I've subscribed to Sirius for about 6-7 years now) and a DirecTV DVR. I synch it up once at the beginning of the game and never have to touch it again. Only bummer is that I can't use any trick-plays on the DVR (rewind to see a play again, etc) or else I will have to synch again. Usually by the first penalty, I can synch it up so that the refs lip movement on the TV is in synch with the audio from Sirius.
Why Sirius? I don't live in the broadcast area. I've never tried the internet feed -- when I first subscribed to Sirius, there was no internet feed of the radio crew. If I could get that to work, I would drop Sirius. The audio quality for music is trash with excessive compression for so many useless channels.

I can't imagine what the entire game is like. Well I can. I caught some pregame earlier this year, and It was again, very painful to hear Sam struggle.
In the Michaels call of the Cousins two point conversion ... Sam yells "TOUCHDOWN!!" when Cousins scored ... Larry had to two or three teams interupt his own call to say, "That was just a 2 pointer!" :ols: pretty funny.
I think Dan if being a stubborn **** for keeping Sam on. He is doing more harm to him than good because in the end people are going to remember his last years as opposed to his entire carreer in the booth.

Doc is the best and should be with any broadcast team going forward but I really like him on the field, instead of the booth, where he is excellent at getting the current vibe of the team and can provide a more vivid picture to the radio audience as to what's going on on the field. He's been the sideline reporter all year but I believe he has a hot mike and constantly contributes throughout the broadcast. I think that is a very cool element. I haven't listened to a broadcast in years unless I am in the bathroom at the stadium or through highlights... but I have heard the replays on the play by play. I really like Doc Walker. I don't know if he has much say, but to be honest, if it is him... he is in a tough spot. No one wants to be the guy to let a HOF Linebacker/generational player in the NFL go. We all love Sam the player, but Sam the broadcaster has run it's course. Dan is a fan like the rest of us, this would be like him letting go of part of his childhood. I'm sure it's in the works, but that's easier said than done. And Dan knows Sam on a personal level, which makes this that much more difficult.
But to me, the moves that were made this season with Doc, and adding Cooley and maybe another (I like BMitch... but I also like him on Comcast for the post game), I think this was the last year.

I wonder if the organization needs a push on this. I'm sure they see it just like most fans who feel just awful for Sam and his senility on air. I wouldn't want to start a petition or anything, that seems sacrilegious, but maybe if some from ES wrote some nice respectful letters asking for a change for the better and asking what the organization was panning for the future there...IDK, just a thought, but I would love to keep seeing and hearing those two guys, just not every game all through the games.

If Sam is pushed out and does not leave of his own accord, Snyder will be verbally abused for being insensitive and cruel. So people will ***** and moan either way, and blame Snyder. The sad thing is that if Sam goes, Sonny almost assuredly will leave also. They are best of friends and love each other dearly as brothers. Based on recent comments from before the season. Sam is convinced he can continue. He did not like being benched for some of the away games this year.
I listen to the radio broadcast at every home game. Despite the approx 30 second delay, I pick up information that I cannot get while in the stadium watching the game. Yes, Sam makes a lot of mistakes; and these days does not add much to the commentary. Doc has been an excellent addition. He brings an insider's knowledge and energy to the broadcast.
Years ago, the Sonny and Sam repartee was fun and informative. Not so much any more. I can tolerate Sam because I grew up listening to the two of them and remember both as players. He should have retired a few years ago. But I don't want to lose Sonny. Sonny is still a very good analyst and fun to listen to.

I listen to Doc and BMitch every day. He uses the word Skins a lot. I also follow him on Twitter and it is all over his Twitter posts. He does say "Burgundy and Gold" but he also refers to them as Skins and/or Redskins.

LCA is correct; you and More Complete are wrong. Go read his twitter timeline. "Redskins" is used for "Redskins Nation", "Hail to the Redskins", "Redskins Alumni Association", and referring to former players. He also is not shy of retweeting tweets that use the word "Redskins" And you will find the word on his facebook and website. So, I think you guys are wrong.
Yes, he does prefer to use "Skins", it seems. And "Burgundy and Gold" is a trademark phrase that he has adopted over the past couple years. But yes, he does use the word "Redskins". Not a lot; but he does use it.

On RG3's long TD run vs the Vikings, Sam called him RJ.
That was hard to listen to. Very awkward.

I remember a time when we would all turn down our TVs so we could listen to Sonny, Sam, and Frank on the radio instead.
That time has sadly passed.

I would also think that being a employee of the Washington Redskins, he would not be allowed to boycot the word "Redskins," even if he had a personal problem with that. If you want to work for the team, you would certainly be required to use the word.

2 or 3 times a year on my podcast we'll pull some of the better Huffisms and play them.
This year Sam is more like an old man who enjoys going for a ride. His main commentary seems to be "this is a pretty good game".
I made this for the show after the Panthers loss. The clips used are all from that game.

Not for me. Thanks to the Snyder broadcasting empire (poor regional radio reception), I've endured a vast assortment of inconvenient options to listen to the radio broadcast while watching road games on TV and, like SonnyandSam, I listen to the broadcast at the home games. Sam and Frank were very good, but Sonny is irreplaceable.

ahhhh the haircut one, wildcat one, and darrell helu one are my favorites. lol "darrell young gets taken down, gain of 8". "helu is good" "that was darrell young" "but didnt he say helu?" "no, i said darrell young".

I love the Darrell Young one,, especially when he goes "WHAT?!" as he's being corrected.
I hope fans don't take these as being overly mean.. I have been listening to Sonny and Sam since they've been doing games. i hope they let him stay until he's ready to leave.
i don't really care if he hasn't got much left to offer, the fact that he's there is fine with me. Even if he is just enjoying the day.
You wouldn't throw your Grand-dad out if he was a bit senile, you'd smile and nod when he said something and largely ignore him and let him enjoy himself, which is what they do in the booth.
there's one old piece of Sam audio that i wish I had.. in chicago about 10 years ago I guess... a fan was heckling him, and Sam got up and hit him. Drilled the guy!

I feel for Sam. I wish someone could just ... IDK. It's though to listen to and I can't really laugh at it, even though laughter can diffuse things, I just can't bring myself to do it.
I mean has anyone actually come level with him about how he sounds?
I would pay money to see him a recliner for every game and well removed from the mic.

I probably am wrong and I would be glad if so. However, twitter is a different story and I listen to him all the time as well. I also watch him on "Redskins Showtime" and I've been waiting for him to say "Redskins" forever. As far as I can tell, he doesn't. If someone has recent audio of him saying Redskins I'd love to hear it. Not that it's that big of a deal but as I said, I would have a problem with him in the booth if he refuses to say the team's name. Again, hope I'm wrong because I love the guy. It's just something that's been bothering me since someone else mentioned it over a year ago and I started paying attention to it.

This is funny that this has come up. Today my brother and I were talking and he brought up this very subject. He used to be a Redskins fan and he is now a hater because of things Snyder did in the past. Out of the blue, he mentioned Doc on the air several years ago telling listeners that they have every right to be fed up and should take their loyalties to a team 30 minutes north of DC that is "doing things the right way." His point was that Doc tells it like it is. He then said, "yeah, he even refuses to use the word Redskins because he finds it offensive." He told me when he heard this, he listened to the John Thompson show for months trying to hear Doc use the word because he found it hard to believe, but not once did he say anything other than "burgundy and gold." So the fact is, I could be mistaken. I'm gonna pay attention to this from now and and see what comes of it. Thanks for the info.
