Barring the departure of assistants for positions elsewhere, Washington's coaching staff will return intact next season, Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday at Redskins Park.
"I'm gonna keep everybody," he said during his final scheduled media availability of the 2010 season. "You never know if some coaches, or assistant coaches, will have chances to be a head coach at the collegiate level. You really don't know, but I plan on keeping everybody."
Shanahan said he was pleased with the group's chemistry during his first season in Washington, and believes players made strides despite a 6-10 season. Washington finished last in the NFC
East for the third consecutive season, but Shanahan is encouraged by the performance of the team's football coaches and the strength-and-conditioning and training staffs.
"It's a process putting your best unit together." Shanahan said. "It does take some time to evaluate, you know, who was the best, once you start practicing, once you start playing games.
It's an ongoing process and we're getting better. But, obviously, not quite good enough this year."
It appears Shanahan will add at least one more coach to the staff.
Although offensive assistant Sean McVay is among the coaches Shanahan said he plans to bring back, McVay likely will not coach tight ends next season. He assumed position coach duties for the final four games after tight ends coach Jon Embree left to become the head coach at the University of Colorado on Dec. 6.
"I think Sean could fill the spot, but the chances are that I'll go in another direction," Shanahan said. "I think Sean does a great job helping at the quarterbacks and wide receiver positions.
"He's a young coach and I have a lot of confidence in the future. I'd like to keep him in that role because he does a good job. Chances are I will go in a different direction, but it's surely not based on Sean's ability. Just based on what I think is best for our organization."
As for the player-personnel staff, Shanahan said he does not envision "making any changes at this time." Scott Campbell, director of player personnel, was the top lieutenant to former Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato. Morocco Brown, director of pro personnel, is considered a rising front-office official.
"Well, No. 1, that's my plan [to bring them back]," Shanahan said. "No. 2, if it wasn't my plan, I wouldn't be sharing it with you at this time, I would sit down and talk to them. So [it's] kinda an unfair question for me. But I don't" plan to make changes.

Sorta makes sense...though, I'd like the ST coach to be on a short leash.
But, let's see what happens with an upgrade in personnel.

He was promoted to the 53 though at the end of the year hence why he didn't get that. Those guys listed are all PS guys and Cook was a 53 man guy

No days off.. i like it.
Each of them play a targeted position of need.
Whether any of them provide anything more than camp fodder,, doesn't matter. I like seeing the Redskins FO continually seeking out young players.
I can't say for certain, but it seems like this year we've made about five times as many moves on and off the PS as any other year I can remember in recent times.

And another thing.
Think back a year or so. Do you remember how refreshing it was when Bruce Allen came in an said no-nonsense things without saying "like" or "um" between every word and ending every thought with "and stuff?" Do you remember how good it felt when Shanny came in and said everyone would be evaluated, and no one was safe?
To me, these are signs of people who have plans.
This is more evidence of a plan.
If it were still Vinny/Zorny, we'd be reading an announcement that they'd brought in David Beckham on a $21M one-year contract as Kicking Coach.

I do like all the moves we've made, checking out new/younger talent, especially when we were eliminated from the playoffs.
I guess I'm fine with the staff coming back fro another year.. the defense has played better as of late.. and may actually be good with the right players. Give everyone at least 2 years to get their system installed and players to play in it before we make changes.

This is good news. I'm not that happy with Haslett, but I feel like it's unfair to only give him one year running a 3-4 with the personnel we had. Let's see how he does when we invest more on our Defense. As much as we harp on that yardage stat and what it means for our overall ranking (read: last), there were plenty of positives in even more important areas like turnovers, QB pressures and sacks.
Oh, and Bang, I'm very happy that Danny Smith will be back. That one was just for you. ;)
Would hate to see him coaching the Eagles special teams, as Andy Reid was reported to have really wanted him had he been released last year if Shanahan deemed him unworthy.

Not sure what you are talking about. From 2004 to 2007, there was only 1 coaching changes that the was initiated by the organization. There were a couple more that were forced on the organization. Even when Zorn came in, there was little change on the defense (pretty much Grilliams left and everybody else just moved up a step) and ST staffs. Given we got a new HC, you'd expect much more than that. 2010 represents the only major reworking of our coaching staff since 2004.

How can you say he was clueless...last in yards is only one stat. He had horrible guys for the D he was told to run, had a ton of injuries to include missing 3 out of 4 starters in the secondary for several games, and had to face Mike Vick, Payton Manning, Aaron Rogers, Jay Cutler. We gave up 17 points a game. Even Shanny said with the D and all its problems we did as well as could be expected. The only clueless thing here is some of our "fans".

Haslett does not belong in the NFL.

Just WHAT does the special teams coach have to do to get fired?
6 years, 3 different HC's, next to nothing from his unit as a whole to show for it.
He can't be holding pictures on all 3 HC's in that time surely? Or does he have something on the owner?

Yeah lets try a wild and crazy idea, like keep everyone and go for consistency for a change. Atm i would love to see the HC,OC, & DC all here for 3 years. After the 3rd year lets look at it again. After year 3, everything should be in place and multiple drafts. To me this will give us a real good idea if true progress is being made.

I did a bit of research but I'm finding it hard to put together the definitive "changes" list. However, between 2004 and 2009, there were 12 changes I found (and possibly more), at positions including HC, Associate HC for Offense, OC, DC, RB Coach, QB Coach, DBs Coach and O assistant.
What's more telling is that this is fewer than I thought - my perception was that we've had a coaching merry-go-round for some time. I guess even with some long-time stalwart coaches here during that time, we've had a constant state of chaos.
I'm relieved to see that dying down a bit.

Actually, things settled down a lot after Gibbs joined the team. Before that, we had a different DC every year. (Nolan, Rhodes, Shottenheimer, Lewis, Edwards), and all the other changes that goes along with that.
The problem with us making judgements about assistant coaches is that we don't know if the coach is accomplishing what the head coach wants or not. We can be happy or disappointed with the performance, but it is up to the head coach to decide if the coach is worthy.
Coaching changes after one year should be unusual, particularly from a veteran head coach like Shanahan. Someone like him should know exactly what he wants from his coaching staff, and the coaching staff should reflect his will.

So it's Jim Zorn and Al Saunders's fault Jason Campbell couldn't be good QB? And uh, kickers develop just like every other position. The ST coach affects kick coverage and kick blocking more than kicking and punting. Guess which of those we were pretty good at this year?

I thought this was alittle interesting, Denver is still pay Mike some change.
Although Broncos president Joe Ellis has said money won't the guiding principle in hiring a new head coach, the Denver Post's Jeff Legwold writes that "the buzz around the NFL" is that finances could in fact impact their decision.
It's not surprising, given that they just paid a big settlement to Josh McDaniels and have $3.5 million committed to Mike Shanahan this year. Former Panthers coach John Fox is the only interviewee to this point that would likely require more than a relatively modest salary. They're expected to be looking to hand out a similar contract to the one new Panthers coach Ron Rivera just signed (four years, $11.2 million).

Has to make you wonder how much Coach is actually making this year. ??
