We've come so far :)

... and we've only begun the journey. I think it's undeniable that the Civil Rights movement has a profound and positive effect. The spectre of racism is not conquered though and I don't think it can ever be. There will always be fear, hate, distrust of other, and a weakness that leads to scapegoating. Still, today and every day I'd like us to celebrate both our differences and our brotherhood.

we should have no holiday to honor any one man, that includes Washington and the stupid Columbus day

Instead Should have been a civil rights holiday instead to honor ALL not just one man

Why do you feel that way? Individuality has always been important to America. More, MLK is an incredible symbol. Civil Rights Day becomes an amorphous thing that is harder for people to wrap their mind around. It's like Memorial Day. Everyone celebrates it, but few honor what the day is supposed to be about. By focusing it on one person we get to think about the trials and struggles of that person and how it contributed to all of us.

Figured this would be a great place to post this:

Please take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices that so many have given for the rights and freedoms of others.

I'm appreciative of today because it only took me 35 minutes to get to work as opposed to an hour...plus I got to sleep in just a little bit longer too. More sleep = appreciative Toaster

"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."

This is one of my favorites from Dr. King. It delved into a more personal side of the man, and dealt with the real fear that came along with his work, but also his unshakable resolve to make this country a better place for all people.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character".

Getting there, but still work to do. Here's to MLK on his day.

I'm first generation Mexican American, and I date a girl who is half black. My parents always tried to raise me as "color blind" as possible. One day after they had met her several times, I was talking to my parents about her. I mentioned that her dad grew up in rural West Virginia during a very racist time.

Both my parents looked up at me and then my dad said "Honest to God, I didn't notice she was black." It was a very funny moment, but I remember thinking to myself "this is when racism will truly be gone." When everyone is like my parents, and they can have multiple conversations, have met someone on multiple occasions, and honestly have no clue what color their skin is...because it just doesn't matter.

No offense to the NBA but I find their wall-to-wall NBA action on MLK day a bit disingenuous. I saw a bit of NBA and I'm fairly certain it was 100% basketball action and 0% anything on MLK.
