The Philadelphia Eagles will use their franchise tag on Michael Vick next month, a league source said Sunday, ensuring the quarterback will be back for the 2011 season.
Vick, who enjoyed a breakout 2010 campaign, repeatedly has insisted he wants to stay in Philadelphia.
"We'll see what happens over the next couple months," he said last week as he prepared to play in his fourth Pro Bowl. "I just got to be patient and take it day by day."
Vick will receive a one-year deal under the franchise tag.
Vick, 30, set career highs in passing yards (3,018), touchdown passes (21), rushing touchdowns (nine), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2) this past season, less than two years after he was released from a federal-prison sentence on dogfighting charges. The Eagles (10-6), who were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Super Bowl-bound Green Bay Packers, went 8-3 in games Vick started and finished.
Vick's return raises questions about the future of Kevin Kolb, who began the season as the Eagles' starting quarterback but lost the job after he was injured. Kolb has said he wants to start in the NFL.
Why did I think Vick's stats were better than that?...
*Edit: his ypa was 8.1 yds, that's why lol...

They would have been much better had we not knocked him out for several games.
*edit* unless you mean career stats...then yes, he just wasn't that good before lol

We made up for that, though, in the 2nd Eagles game lol :ols: ...

Does the franchise tag even apply anymore, until a new deal between the owners and players is made?

ughh...now the eagles can have a chance to beat us 2 times each year until our defense and offense become good

If we draft a stud @ NT & OLB and a playmaker @ FS I think we can consistently (notice I said consistent, we played him tough at certain points last year) do a better job of stopping/containing Vick in the future.
I hate talking like this about another player but the more we knock vick the **** out (injury) the better our chances are of beating the birds twice a year.
Hail!

THREE studs on D in one draft? That'd be impressive.

If you can't beat 'em, hurt 'em? Classy!

Seriously, why are we trying to predict wins now? We don't even know who is on the rosters. Or the coordinators.

I know fever said draft, but I'm amending that to the Draft and Free Agency.

yea this was so expected if they couldn't get a contract extension done....I mean it is a win/win for the eagles....especially if he gets injured or flops and doesn't have the same year as this year...they just paid him this year instead of giving him a 4 year deal with over 80 million dollars and probably somewhere around 35 to 45 million guarantee

This is the year for quarterbacks who get the franchise tag...if it's an average of the top 5 salaries, with Manning and Brady getting new contracts for a huge amount, Vick's going to cash in.

He didn't do a second of time for any animal abuse and now he is going to get out of his financial hole. Makes me sick.

This is a heart breaking look at what actually happened and what he should have been held responsible for.

Which is why whenever someone says he's paid his dues couldn't be more wrong. That scumbag got off easy for what he did, and the Surry DA showed he was nothing more than a coward for not pursuing charges for the death of the dogs he murdered for fun.

Vick has to be furious about this. At his age the franchise tag is killer. He's looking for a long term big money deal not a one year deal that could result in a career ending injury.

I could not agree more. If he did his time, maybe I'd feel different. But that POS got off easy, because he is good at a game. Makes me want to stop watching football, when people like him or Big Rappy get off free like that.

I doubt it. He's lucky that the Eagles took a flyer on him and he got a chance to start. Those millions were long gone before the Eagles gave him a chance.
Actually, you're probably right. He probably does feel furious. But that's probably because he's a coddled athlete fool who has always had everything handed to him. The only one he should feel feel furious toward is himself.

Fair enough. I had no idea that he was convicted for that. Changes my opinion entirely (well, kinda, because I don't think he should have been allowed back in the league anyway). But I really didn't know that, thanks.
I don't know what to make of the Big Ben though. While the seeming evidence is pretty damning, he hasn't been convicted of anything, and nothing has really been proved. If that changes, though, so will my opinion.
As for the money issue, the franchise tag gives him one year at the average of the top 5 QB salaries in the league. With Manning and Brady both cashing in this year, that number is going to skyrocket.

I know people he went to college with and Ben was doing that **** back then too. He is a pretty deplorable person too.
It's getting hard to be an NFL fan anymore, with all of the domestic abusers and criminals in the league.
It's definitely making me more of a hockey fan. Go Flyers! I like all Philly teams, but was lucky enough not to be raised an iggle fan by accident.

That's an interesting story...how were you raised on the Flyers, 6ers, Phillies, but not the Beagles?
