View Full Version : The SB commercials

I really thought the Darth Vader/VW commercial was the best.
I think Doritos and the beer companies are trying way too hard.
Eminem = total sell out. Glad to see Lipton bringing back the claymation cartoons, but how can anyone take Eminem seriously if he's pitching iced tea? They should have brought that concept back along the lines of the Rocky or Babe Ruth ones that were awesome from back in the day. The Eminem motor city commercial was tolerable until he said something like "This is Detroit and this is what we do" and pointed to the camera.
The E-Trade baby has lost all steam.
Your thoughts on the SB commercials?

disappointing. I was hoping to see Polamalu Head & Shoulders and Matthews Suave.

Beer commercials are almost always terrible, and tonight was no exception.
Coca-Cola's commercials were all really boring.
The E-Trade baby needs to go.
The two creepiest ads were the one for Doritos with the guy desperate for Doritos dust and crumbs, and the one for some vacation website featuring this plastic baby getting its head crushed:
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2236/babyabusegifpagespeedce.gif
I thought the best ones were the Eminem Chrysler ad, the Teleflora ad with Faith Hill, the VW Darth Vader ad, and the NFL ad showing all of the TV characters, which included this particularly awesome image:
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/2779/sofiaskins41.png
Sofia Vergara in a tight Redskins shirt is always FTW.
The usual movie trailer ones were cool too. Thor, Captain America, Transformers, Cowboys & Aliens, Battle: Los Angeles, and Super 8 all had good spots.

Yes, that's a gigantic win.
And I agree with the Darth Vader ad, that was good.

I gave a standing ovation to the Cowboys & Aliens trailer in the bar I was at, and a couple dozen people joined in. The title alone is inherently awesome.
Anyone who hasn't turned off sigs should know that I liked the House spoof of the Mean Joe Greene ad, but judging by the reaction of a crowded bar, it was a pretty good ad even if you're not a fanboy.

I also thought the CarMax one was funny. The wrestler in the folding chair factory sold it for me:

Not to be a hum bug but I thought these commercials as a whole stunk. Sure I liked a few like the Vader kid and...umm...well honestly that was it. Just seems like there is a total lack of creativity by whoever is on the "creativity" team. I remember the commercials from my younger years and they seemed so much better...and way more creative...of course this could just be selective memory on my part.
Rant over.

Volkswagen/Vader was the winner by far. That was just great. Audi/Kenny G. was a clear second in our house. After those 2, a pretty steep drop off. House/Mean Joe, Coke/Dragon, Beetle/WV, Beaver/Bridgestone played well in our house.
The most polarizing was the Adrian Brody ad. All the single ladies liked it. The rest of us fell asleep.

The joys of trying to watch NFL with a 5 year old. We turned off half the commercials and ended up missing Volkswagon/Vader.. at least until the tail end of the commercial. It's not a problem strictly with the NFL, its a problem watching any sports with the sexual-ized commercials; and then the ads for violently-themed movies.... we can't make it through a TV break without turning off the TV. For what I saw the most memorable commercial was the "One Epic Ride" Kia commercial, where the car gets stolen by a policeman, a supevillian, Poseidon, alians, and the Aztecs (or maybe the Mayans?). Some reason I saw the Eminem Iced Tea commercial and liked it. My son would've liked the Vader commercial... maybe I'll show it to him on YouTube.

1) My 9 year old son and I laughed hysterically at the Doritos commercial where the guy licked the dust off his co-worker's finger, that was awesome.
2) I burst out laughing when Rosanne Barr got creamed by that giant log.
Oh and "Test Baby" was hilarious too.
3) Epic ride was a really nice concept and well executed.
4) Darth Vader has really cute, my son liked it a lot.
5) House/Mean Joe Green was great, although I had to explain it to my son.
Bud Light = Fail on all attempts

Didn't care for many of them.
The Vader one was a winner. I also chuckled at the Pepsi Max one where we could hear the girl and guy's thoughts.
The rest? Bleh. Though I did like the part of the claymation Eminem commercial where he started to sing and there is guy there pushing a button and bleeping out about 90% of his lyrics. :ols:

Have you seen this racist Pepsi commercial that negatively stereotypes black women as angry and violent yet? In it a black woman bullies her black husband for eating bad things and at the end throws a can of Pepsi at a white woman he smiles at. Think I'm kidding? View the video here (you may have to click to see it on Youtube):Yes I do think you're kidding. Kidding that you are upset over this nonsense.

Ok, so I agree that the commercial is depicting Black women as being controlling but it is also racist against white women. Why in the world did pepsi think it would be a good idea for a black woman to throw a can of soda and hit the white woman! They really did not think this commercial through very well!

Interesting. I wonder how racist it is to automatically assume that the producers of that commercial made the girlfriend angry because she's black, rather than the alternative explanation that they wanted to make a commercial about an angry girlfriend and happened to cast a black woman?

Agreed, I watched it, and the commercial made me feel just a little bit weird, not so much the angry black chick, just the concept in general. Maybe if she had thrown the Pepsi in the dudes face, and he ducked it and the couple had run off, maybe that would have been a better concept. But I didn't find it racist. Though in the write-ups it seems the context of the ad is misrepresented. She doesn't throw the Pepsi at the white chick, she throws it at her dude who ducks the can, and it hits the white girl. Either way, I don't think it was necessarily racist. If I dig deeper I can see it, but I think at that point it's all unnecessary speculation.

A 6-year-old heart patient from Children's Hospital Los Angeles appeared in a Super Bowl commercial Sunday, playing Darth Vader in a car commercial.
Max Pagehasm, who is also part of the cast of "The Young and the Restless" was the little "man behind the Darth Vader mask'' in a Volkswagen ad that aired during Super Bowl XLV.
Max took off his mask Monday on TODAY. He said he had never seen Star Wars, so he didn't know a lot about the character he was playing.
When Max was just 4 months old, he was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect. His parents, Buck and Jennifer Page, brought Max to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where he received a pacemaker.
"Max's prognosis going forward is very good,'' said Dr. Michael Silka, head of the hospital's Division of Cardiology and Max's pediatric cardiologist. "He can essentially have normal activity and with careful care, a full life is a reasonable expectation.''
Max's parents see the attention as an opportunity to reach out to parents whose children suffer from heart conditions.

Billy Bob Thornton is a movie star. Not on the Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise/etc. level, but the guy's got money and fame. His looks don't factor into it. You think Kim Kardashian would have ever dated Miles Austin, or known that he existed even when he was in the NFL, before he broke out and became a star player? Hell no.
When it comes to a guy without the fame and riches, the looks do matter, when you're talking about a famous woman.
Obviously, all bets are off when it comes to two non-famous people, no matter the looks.
And Kevin Federline was a decently well-known backup dancer for many very famous groups before he started dating/married Britney Spears, who also probably wasn't/isn't mentally stable :ols: So he had access to a sex-symbol with mental issues.

I thought the "Reply All" Guy commercial was funny.
The only problem was that it was for Bridgestone Tires, but it didn't get that message across at all considering it concentrated on a guy doing crazy things like jumping out of a tree on someone or running into a meeting to take everyone's laptops so they couldn't read his accidental e-mail. It just showed some tires screeching around tight corners, but that could easily be a sign of him driving like a maniac, not him having great tires.
Humorous commercial, but bad advertisement. At least the weird Doritos one focused on a part of Doritos that a lot of people actually recognize and enjoy- eating the dusty bits at the end of a bag.

I thought it was a very lame crop of ads this year.
All of the ones that i've been reading or seeing on the news for the "top ads" i thought were awful.
I didn['t think the "reply all" was funny, the kid in the Darth costume was cute, but not OMG Super Bowl Awesome... and certainly not "let's have him on every news show" good.
the pug was OK, but predictable. Doritos usually have some of the best, funniest and most creative ads, but not this year.
I did somewhat like the Detroit ad, because it was something different. A new message, and interesting to watch.
Overal, I think Super Bowl commercials are now suffering from "We have to make the most awesomest funniest commercial ever!" syndrome. They're trying too hard.
Oh, and i hate Go Daddy. As a web developer guy, I can't stand it when one of my clients tells me that is who they used. It means I have a ton of hoops to jump thru to get my work done.
But hey, titties! That's what Go Daddy sells. Tits. They're "services" suck. The only reason anyone ever uses them is because of tits in their commercials, and while i recognize that as effective marketing, it smacks of all the plastic packaging with no substance that our country seems to prefer these days.
Oh, and Danica Patrick isn't really all that. Joan Rivers is naturally funny (the only natural thing she's got left!) but all the Go Daddy commercials ever do is show me some whores. Nothing sexy about trash.
Usually after the Super Bowl there's one or two that stick in my head, and mostly all of this year's ads were totally forgettable.
Because it's Tuesday, and I've already forgotten them.
Oh, and Rennaisance,, you were certainly not the only one that caught the creepies watching the Groupon commercial.
I thought it was extremey tasteless, and it's actually the only ad I've seen since the Super Bowl, and it's just as classless the second time around.

This year as a whole , was pretty underwhelming, although there were a few bright spots. The E Trade baby was cool when they first did it, three years ago. Besides the E Trade app commercial, most of the recent ones have been pretty meh. They need to go ahead and kill that one, or find some better material.

I give the E-trade baby another year for "frowned upon in this establishment" alone. The first time I heard that, it made me spit out my water.

Jeep/Chrysler has been trying hard to re-image their line-up the past year.
I liked the Chrysler add during the SB.
I also liked this one which came out when they released the new Grand.
I do like that commercial a lot.
The only thing that I find sort of strange is that they went to the trouble of licensing Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down," but don't play any of it except for the instrumental background. Granted, a song about Biblical vengeance isn't very applicable to selling SUV's to begin with, and it's a really cool instrumental background, I just thought it was random that they'd use that song without really using it.
And it was funny that that was actually Bieber saying that (made to look older), making fun of himself. Gained a little bit of respect for him there.
Unpopular opinion alert:
I don't think Bieber is that bad. His music probably is (although it's not clearly not targeted to me so I don't really care), but he seems like a pretty charismatic, self-aware kid.

Groupon has charity funds on their site for the exact issues "exploited" in those commercials. I guarantee you 90% of the people getting all self-righteous about those ads have never donated a penny to those issues. I'm not saying the ads were all that funny. I just wish people would quit complaining about the "exploitation" of something that they've most likely never made any effort to change themselves.

Groupon intentionally tried to create controversy, outrage and 'buzz'. It's a cynical marketing tactic. They have to hope the added notoriety was worth the backlash from the portion of consumers who will avoid the brand and their advertisers.

I'm not going to win any argument about that ad. I understand people thought it was tasteless. I'm not trying to change your opinion. I just thought the ads were more mocking the American culture of ignorance and indulgence than anything else. People act like what they did was so horrific, but at the end of the day, the company is actually making an effort to change those things, unlike most people. Pardon me if thinking that makes me an *******. I try to not get offended by these kind of things. It makes life easier. I will say that I've thought about Tibet and Deforestation more the past two days than I have in months. Maybe those ads were effective in a sick kind of way.
And before you crucify me for defending the ads...re-watch them and ask yourself this: Is the ad mocking Tibet/Deforestation more than it is mocking the materialistic/ignorant/always looking to save money society America has become? It is really more self-deprecating humor than anything else, because our society is that shallow.

I actually think that truer words were spoken very shortly afterward: "1500 years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was the center of the universe. 500 years ago, everybody knew that the Earth was flat. And 15 minutes ago, you knew that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."
(Forget, for a moment, that the reports of "knowing" that the Earth is the center of the universe or that it's flat were overstated. The basic message of that line still resonates: Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.)

Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.
That one was good, but the first line always hits home for me. The one thing that sets us as individuals apart from a wild animal, is our highly developed brains. We like to think of ourselves as very intelligent, rational, compassionate people, yet our history as a species has shown many times that we're fully capable of committing truly horrific acts, especially when faced with a situation that challenges our belief system/something we can't comprehend. We tend to become hostile.
That's why I'm completely captivated by movies like The Matrix, Armageddon, Invasion, I Am Legend, etc. I always find myself wondering what I'd do if I knew that the world was coming to an end tomorrow. How would I react? What would I do if I somehow found out that I was living in some sort of controlled alternate reality? Would I accept it? Or would I struggle to come to grips with it, lashing out in the process? It really takes you on a mindtrip.

It's going to take a miracle to win Monday. We play BC three straight games actually. Beanpot Monday then at Conte Forum Friday and then at Matthews Saturday. It is going to get ugly and fast. Also surprised at how poorly Minnesota is doing this season but as long as they make the WCHA Tournament anything can happen.
