View Full Version : Light Beer Snobbery....what gives????

Serious question, because I know this topic includes some in this forum.

I go to sporting events all the time. This happens more times than I can imagine.

And it is never directed towards one light beer.

Oh and this isn't a thread about bashing light beer versus your full bodied beers....just getting a beer at a sporting event.

You go to a stand and they offer only (for this example lets say) Miller Lite. The person you are with says ahhhh Miller Lite is crap. Lets look for a stand that sells (Coors, Bud) Lite. I can't drink that crap. So you walk a quarter of the way around the stadium to find one of the few stands that offer (Coors, Bud) Lite.

Are you kidding me?

It's a freaking LIGHT beer. Man up Sally :pfft: I know some people in this forum do this. What is the reasoning.

I remember a long time ago, before Coors light was a "Union Beer" someone with me told me he would never drink a non union beer. Well, at least he had some valid reasoning. :ols:

I have heard all kinds of stories about X light beer causing abdominal discomfort the next morning ;) Or hangovers...or whatever. But I have heard the same excuses for all three mentioned in this thread.

So tell me why you are a light beer snob?

Personally I never have had an issue with relation to any specific light beer, maybe other than the quantity I drank. :evilg:

miller lite tastes like carbonated water to me. other light beers arent much better. i'd probably walk to the stand around the corner to get a different light beer, if that's all there was.

I'm not a big Coors fan, it's WAY too watered down. It tastes like alcoholic beer-flavored water. If I had to choose between the "big three," I'd go with Bud Light.

I too am a fan of Miller Lite, and prefer it. I have no problem with Bud Light either.

Coors Light, on the other hand, is a heaping pile of ****. It also gives me the worst hangovers. I only need to drink one. I don't know why, but its happened enough times that I will never touch the stuff again........

I'll drink Bud Light or Miller Light, not that picky about it. Coors lite on the other hand tastes like water and I'm not a fan of it at all. I actually know a guy who ONLY drinks Michelob Ultra Lights, we once wen't to a bar that didn't serve it and he drank water instead. We still make fun of him for it.

I regularly drink Miller Lite and Coors Light, and I can taste the difference between ML, CL, and BL. I cannot drink Bud Light. Probably because I've been drinking ML solidly for the past 5 years.

I do enjoy other beers, (Octoberfests, Shiner/amber bock, Smithwicks, and any other malty beers I can find) but I wake up with the worst headache. I could drink 15 "light" beers or 5 "normal" beers and wake up with the same killer hangover...

I seem to be one of the few who has no trouble the next morning, after drinking lots of light beer. Although I have a strange resistance to hangovers. No matter how terribly drunk I get, or what beer/liquor I drink, I feel great the next morning. Bud Light is my preferred brand, but I'll drink any of them. Coors Light sucks ass though. So does Keystone, but that's the point....its cheap ****. Like drinking PBR. Or Steel Reserve. You know going in.

So anyways, arguing over light beer reminds me of this. Specifically, from the :48 mark.

I like Amstel Light and I'd probably migrate to a stand that sold it if I knew one existed nearby. Otherwise miller lite or coors light does the job. Bud light has a after taste for me that I'm not a fan of but it's not bad enough to disqualify it completely.

I will not drink Natty light or Beast of any kind.

Why do you drink light beer? Is it because you want fewer calories? Is it because you don't like the flavor of regular beer? Is it because you plan on drinking alot and don't want to get too drunk?

What is you rationale for drinking light beer?

Tweedr01
March-9th-2011, 08:08 AM
I don't really drink beer all that much anymore, the only light beer I really never liked was Coors Lite, but I think that had more to do with the fact it was the first beer I ever tried and I didn't really like it too much. Now mind you I still drink, not as much as I used to, but usually keep it to liquor, less carbs/sugar/calories.

EDIT: If I'm gonna drink beer I will drink beer, not lite beer, they pretty much all taste like Natty now

I think most want to save on calories, but when you compare light beers to some regular beers you aren't saving much, at least not until you get to the true piss water beers, the ultra-low calorie beers. A beer at 55/64/92 calories? It has ultra low alcohol content so you might as move onto O'Douls or you will be drinking twice as many just to get a buzz, and in the process drink the same amount of calories. A bottle of Bud Light has 110 calories. Guinness Draught has 115. I know some of you don't like Guinness but a beer that many claim is "heavy" tasting has slightly more calories with a full taste. There are other options.

Now, if you are drinking beer just to get hammered, then drink Natty Light or Bud Light Ice. Otherwise if you just enjoy a beer in the evenings drink a regular beer or two.

And which liquor are you drinking? 1oz. of Whiskey has 70 calories and 28g of sugar. Vodka is probably the best choice as 1oz. has 65 calories, no sugar/carbs but 280mg of sodium.

Many studies have been done using the big three Light beers (Miller Lite, Coors Light, and Bud Light) in blind taste tests. The results have been conclusive that no one can actually taste the difference (a very small percentage, thus rendering it statistically negligible) between those three.

In fact, Coors Light "when the mountains turn" blue brings it to such a cold temperature that taste buds can't function properly to discern differences in flavor.

People say they can, but science and research says they can't.

Not sure where that info is coming from but it's not correct. Hard liquor does not have sugar unless it's added after distilling.

The process of distilling turns sugars into alcohol.

I'm with the OP...I can't really tell the difference between Bud Light or Miller Lite. Now, I can tell the difference between one of those two and Michelob Ultra (or any of those low-low-calorie beers). And, once the beers get a little darker, I can obviously tell the difference between Sam Adams or, say, Blue Moon. But, I never got the whole Red Team (Bud) vs. Blue Team (Miller) before.

I'll admit I'm a beer snot now, I drink mostly Guinness, occasionally a Smithwicks, Harp or Bass, or I'll go to the Belgian place down the road and drink their Trappist beers which are all full flavored. What kind of whiskey has sugar?? Typically any distilled alcohols are zero carb.

:secret: Defined chemically (as neutral compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen), alcohol is a carbohydrate. But the etymology of the word is that carboydrates contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and are usually in the proportion to form water with the general formula Cn(H2O)n. So people will say it's not a carbohydrate because the oxygen isn't in proportion.

Low carb does not mean low calorie. Alcohol contains more calories per gram (6) than sugar (4).

man, i feel truly sorry for people who have actually developed a palette than can discern the miniscule gradients of taste between the various pisswaters of bud light, miller lite, coors, etc. What a waste.

the most infuriating thing is the Millier Lite commercials, which try so darn hard to pretend their beer has flavor. such a blatant lie. and then, based on that faulty premise, the commercials try to terrify men into ordering Miller Lite, for fear of being perceived as a wimp by the bartender. stupid on so many levels. the irony is, you would be hard pressed to find a wimpier beer than miller lite (or coors, or bud, or whatever). fear that your machismo is being threatened is a truly idiotic factor to base a beer choice on, but if you really are that insecure, i suggest seeking out REAL beer such as Dogfish Head or Unibroue or Stone or Rogue. hell, even stadiums and crappy chain restaurants usually have Sam Adams somewhere -- not a huge fan of the boston lager, but most of their seasonals have some character.

No, it's a place down in Occoquan called the **** and Bowl. Their menu revolves around mussles and frites (french fries) so they're trying for some authenticity. I believe at least one of the owners (a married couple) is from Belgium.

The food I find to be a little overpriced for what you get, but their Belgian beer list is incredible, though marked up. If you go, try the Rochefort 8, that's quickly becoming my new favorite beer.

I drink Miller Lite.. because it's a halfway decent pilsner, and it's usually the ONLY pilsner in the beer case... except for Pilsner Urquell, which tastes like sewage.
The beer coolers in the stores around here are like 85% lagers, and 14% ale. I like a pilsner.. Sam Adams used to make a Golden Pilsner,, and it was delicious.. but they don't anymore. the last pilsner of theirs I got was an Imperial Pilsner,, 4 bottles of the worst tasting stuff I ever bought. WAY overdone.

I don't bash others for drinking lite beers or companies using commercials to promote training beverages. Eventually when the youngins' voices deepen and they have their first signs of chest hair they might be ready for a Guinness or Heineken. :) :D

j/k

I get spoiled with the beer selection up here around Vermont, it's pretty rare to see someone actually drinking bud/miller/coors light willingly. We've got a lot of local breweries who make great beer like Switchback, Long Trail, Harpoon, Trout River, Rock Art, Otter Creek, etc..

The exception of course is cheap beer specials like $1.50 tallboys of Gansett or PBR. I'm not going to turn that down.

You might be thinking of their Noble Pils, which is a spring seasonal beer. I had one last night (delicious), so I know it's available now.

I agree with you about the imperial Pilsner, I wasn't a fan either.

Since youre closer to Maine, have you tried Allagash? I bought one while I toured the brewery that was aged in a Jim Beam bourbon barrel...it was awesome - Allagash Curieux is the name

Yea, Allagash makes great stuff. Their Allagash White is actually what I would consider a very "good" light beer.

Their Dubbel is great too, I may have to pick up a bottle to drink while watching the Caps tonight.

Definitely, it's you can basically find it anywhere that's not a 7-Eleven or a gas station. I'm a big fan of their IPA and Oatmeal Stout.

Allagash White is a great beer, but I don't think it counts as light unless Belgian whites are naturally light beers.

Thanks for the heads up Forward, gonna be giving this place a try.

Just came back from VT over the weekend, went to the Burlington Brewery or something like that, they had some GREAT unique beers brewed there...the Burly Irish Ale was the best for sure.

I didn't mean to imply that it was in the "light beer"category like Miller or Bud, just that it's a light-bodied/summer time beer like wheat ales, pilsners or whites.

If you're ever skiing or driving through the Waterbury area (near Stowe, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen) you should go The Alchemist for some beer. That place is out of this world.

I prefer Miller Lite, but it's all pretty much the same if I'm going for quantity.

I get what you mean now. I definitely agree, they're awesome summer beers. I don't think I've had an Allagash White or Hoegaarden since last summer actually.

None of you have ever heard of the best light beer, is my guess. Genny Light. Cheap and gets the job done... And it's local. Mmmmm. (And by Mmmm I mean I don't know if there is a taste or not, so it takes on the taste of whatever it is you're eating. If you're not eating you're probably so far gone that it doesn't matter in the least :ols:)

Ah Genesee, the beer of kings...or at least the preferred beer of my backwoods Pennsylvania cousins.

By the way, Genny gets bonus points for having a beer spokesman named Chet Hammerton.

I never said where it was brewed, I just said it was the preferred beer of my cousins. And it is. My uncle Chuck pounds Genny Cream Ales non-stop at our family reunions, or at least he used to.

I still believe the Man Card police recruitment increased after guys back in the day started Sampling Zima Beer and claimed it was great beer.
FACT: zima was never a great beer, lol

I think that plays into the point though. Teenagers who watch the commercials want zima because it looks cool in commercials, in real life when you outgrow the immaturity of it all you get something that you want or enjoy because you could give two craps what anyone else thinks.
