With ODU's Spring Game being tomorrow and this being ODU's first year as a football member in the CAA, I figured I would create a thread dedicated to CAA football, and give us ES CAA fans a place to banter and talk smack with one another.
CAA football is quite different from basketball in that the teams 11 teams that currently make up the CAA football conference are:
Delaware
JMU
Maine
UMass
New Hampshire
ODU
Rhode Island
Richmond
Towson
Villanova
W&M
For those of you who have not already heard this will be the last season that UMass will be in the CAA for football. Starting next year they will be moving up to the FBS level and will be a member of the MAC.
Also, there had been rumors circulating for months on whether Villanova had an invite to join the Big East, and supposedly they were going to make a decision on April 12th; however, it appears as if they did not have an invitation, but I still believe it's only a matter of a few years (2-3) before Villanova will be playing football in the Big East.
The CAA football conference has been labeled the "SEC of the FCS" since the CAA has several teams who are capable of winning the National Championship year in and year out. Here's to another great season, and I'm glad that ODU Football now has a conference to call home, even if that home is the toughest conference in the FCS.

I know the 2nd half of the season wasn't very good, but beating VT last year still had to make it a good year for JMU.
Plus JMU will be unveiling their new upgraded 25,000 seat stadium, just another step setting up the process of moving up the FBS level.

I believe we should start out 3-0 with games vs. Campbell, @ Georgia St., and vs. Hampton. Then if we can get 3 conference wins I'd be ecstatic, and if we get more than 3 wins then I would be absolutely giddy.

A bit of bad news for ODU on Friday, when DE Andrew Turner ruptured his left Achilles tendon during a mini-workout and is expected to miss 5-6 months.
Also, the Oyster Bowl will be making a comeback to Foreman Field this fall when JMU comes to town to take on ODU. The Oyster Bowl had been played at Foreman Field from 1946-95.

At least you all have football though, and like you said you all do play against Maryland this year. It could be worse, you could have no football team, and sitting around just waiting for basketball to begin.
Also, if Towson ever wanted to move up and become Div 1 (FBS level) entirely, they have the most needed piece a football team, while they need to become successful, who knows that could very well happen 5-10 years down the road. Football drives conference realignment, and Towson still has the asset it needs if they ever want to move to the next level.
Plus, if Towson can turn their football program around they won't be left in the dark when the CAA either moves up to the FBS level or falls by the waste side, when several schools (ODU, JMU, UD, and possibly W&M) leave for BCS conferences in the years to come.

I know I'm a few days late with the news, and I'm sure it's already been posted in the other college football thread, but JMU will be playing WVU on September 15th, 2012 at FedEx Field.
http://www.dailymail.com/Sports/201106260119
This is a huge step for JMU, to get a FBS power team, to agree to play on a neutral field with an FCS team. Hopefully JMU does well and this continues to open doors for the other CAA football teams in the future in trying to get FBS teams to take them seriously and schedule either neutral site games or home & home series.
Edit: On a later side note, it was announced back in April that UMass will be leaving the CAA to go to the MAC. This upcoming season will be the last for UMass in the CAA for football.

Don't forget about Mason fans as well.
Anyways, only 30 days until the first game!
Here's a list of the preseason rankings for this upcoming year:
http://www.collegesportingnews.com/content.php?500-2011-FCS-Consolidated-Preseason-Ranking
CAA teams:
#2 William & Mary
#6 Delaware
#11 New Hampshire
#14 Richmond
#18 James Madison
#19 Villanova
#23 UMass
Once again it appears as if the CAA will be the class of the FCS. 7 out of 11 teams are ranked in the top 25 in preseason, and it's going to be another murder's row in CAA play this upcoming season.
As for ODU being picked 10th out of 11 schools, I wouldn't be surprised to see ODU upset a team or 2 in the CAA and finish more around 8th in their first season in the league.

As a W&M student I have to hype my team right here!
We ended last season ranked pretty high, ending #10 due to a poor playoff showing. We were ranking #1 at times with a QB carousel and our star RB hurt. This year we'll have some stability at QB, probably with Mike Paulus (Yes, that is Greg Paulus's brother and former UNC QB) and our RB, Jon Grimes will be healthy again. Expect big things. Our defense is always stout and we run a solid prostyle offense. Some pre-season polls have us at #1. We'll probably lose a couple games cause our schedule is so hard with our conference. We play UVA at UVA for our first game...we beat them 2 years ago in C-Ville pretty nicely, 26-14. I hope for a repeat of that.

It's definitely going to be tougher for W&M to go up to Charlottesville and beat UVA like they did 2 years ago. If anything, beating them 2 years ago, you all got their full attention, and Mike London will make sure his team is ready to play. With that said, I still believe W&M has the talent to go up there, and I refuse to say upset UVA, because it wouldn't be an upset if W&M won this game on Sept. 3rd. Both teams are pretty even, and I would give W&M the edge based on their QB and RB compared to UVA's QB and RB.

I think we will both be better than 09. We're getting better recruits in the 'burg as well. It'll be a good game. One I think W&M can pull out esp since it'll be UVA's QB's first game starting, no matter who it is.

Meh, gave up my 4 ODU season tickets this year. That stadium is so cramped it was miserable. I know, I know, what can you expect from small school college football. But the increase in ticket prices combined with the thought of 7 home games sitting on a grooved metal bleacher for 3.5 hours was more than I could take. However, I still say "GO BIG BLUE!"

Well today wasn't a very good day for the CAA outside of Richmond upsetting Duke (if you want to call that an upset), and ODU & Towson beating up on lesser opponents in Campbell and Morgan State.
Results from today's CAA games are:
UNC 42 vs. JMU 10
UVA 40 vs. UVA 3 (very disappointed in this result, I thought W&M could win, but didn't think they'd get their doors blown off)
Navy 40 vs. Delaware 17
Maine 28 vs. Bryant U 13
Richmond 23 vs. Duke 21
Towson 42 vs. Morgan St. 3
ODU 41 vs. Campbell 14
For this week the CAA finished 5-5, but the high ranked teams were throttled by FBS teams.

Wasn't that good of a game from JMU yesterday, not a lot of us expected to win, but more so expected to keep it close. One big positive though was Thorpe playing well and our new LT AJ Scott playing well against a guy who's expected to be a top 10 pick.

Absolutely pathetic. I expect more from them. They're a good FCS school and should've been able to keep it close against a low-tier ACC school like UVA.
Sidenote: I wonder how Jefferson would've felt about this rivalry between W&M (his Alma Mater) and UVA (his creation). I guess he'd have to switch sides at the half or something.

What does Fairfax have to do with Mason not having a team?
BTW, do they still have a club team? I was a charter member of the Football Club at Mason and played the first two seasons. Good times. We didn't win many games those first two years, but we had some quality coaches and players and went toe-to-toe with other established JuCo and smaller school programs. A group of plaers and coaches gathered bleachers from surrounding Fairfax parks, put them around the Rugby field, and striped the field the morning before our first Homecoming Game. We went on to win that night.

Maybe earlier considering the way the president is pushing it plus the money pouring in from new donors and the Final 4. Not to mention how bad ass would it be on Saturday afternoon/evening with VCU and ODU tailgating before another epic face off?

If you believe that VCU will have a football team on the field in 5-10 years, then you're kidding yourself.
VCU has nowhere near the endowment they need from alumni/fans, also VCU has no stadium to play in. Not to mention VCU has shown by their actions that they are concentrating on basketball by giving Smart a $1.2 million annually in base pay. Football is not in the immediate plans.
In this economy VCU can't afford to build a stadium, or reconstruct a stadium off campus. They would need at least $50 million (what it cost ODU, and we had a stadium already in tact on campus), and my guess would be more like $75 million to start up a football program, and there's no way VCU alumni/fans are able to gather that amount of money so they can have football.
For now you and other VCU fans can have fun sitting inside an empty Siegel Center on Saturdays while ODU fans enjoy football games at Foreman Field.

In the opinion of clearly unbiased ODU fan lol. First, VCU has a lot more money than you think it does. Second, our alumni numbers are rising fast. Third, who said building a new stadium? There's a stadium down the street from us that would just need some renovating and reconfiguring. In case you didn't know taking something old and making it new is VCU's specialty. Fourth, the new president is a football guy and he's pushing hard. Fifth, students are pushing harder than ever. The club football team had almost 500 VCU fans show up a high school football stadium to cheer them on. I repeat our CLUB football team.

Towson off to a start!!! Homecoming next week against Colgate and then the big showdown at College Park!
I'm actually looking forward to the Towson game at ODU on October 15th with the way they're playing. I knew the game would be somewhat of a challenge, since every CAA game will be tough, but now it looks like ODU is in for a true test with Towson.

Towson's offense has been great so far. I know its early and Morgan St doesn't really count, but 73 points in 2 games is very good. Plus only allowing 13 is great too.

The Harrisonburg newspaper reported that JMU Athletic Director Jeff Bourne has said that JMU could go 1A as soon as "18-24 months".
This is a complete 180 from his normal conservative - "we have no intention of moving up anytime soon", which makes me think something may already be in the works as a result of all of these other conference realignments.

I can't say I'm surprised, especially with the all of the chaos going on with the BCS conferences, I'm not surprised to see JMU being a candidate to move up to 1-A very soon. I could see them joining either C-USA or the MAC. I think C-USA makes more sense. I can't see them getting an invite to the ACC or Big East, assuming there's a Big East when all the dust settles.

Crossing my fingers that it ends up being true and that we end up in a conference with some relatively known teams - like ECU and Marshall, and perhaps some Big East castoffs that don't make the cut for the new Big East/Big 12 superconference that sounds likely.

I saw the article/thread you saw over at the Zone and it really doesn't talk about JMU moving up, it's more of forming a new conference comprised of lower level 1-A schools, and upper level 1-AA schools. The schools included in the article are JMU, Appalachian St., Delaware, Marshall, Ohio University, and ODU.
I read where it said the CAA wouldn't be reformed to fit all of these schools in because 1-A wants to have schools that play football, which means VCU, Mason, Hofstra, Northeastern, UNC-W, and Drexel are SOL.
The journalist also states he believes schools like Richmond and W&M would remain at the 1-AA level.

Happy that we hung with and played tough against a very solid Delaware team; however, disappointed in the fact we had a chance to shock the CAA world and actually win this game and our special teams let us down with allowing that horrible kick off return)
Boston College 45 vs. UMass 17 (2-1, 1-0)
Rhode Island 21 (1-2, 0-1) vs. Fordham 17
New Hampshire 45 (2-1, 1-0) vs. Richmond 43 (3-1, 0-1)
Towson 42 (3-0, 1-0) vs. Colgate 17
Villanova 30 (1-3, 0-1) vs. Penn 21
JMU 20 (3-1, 1-0) vs. W&M 14 (2-2, 0-1) (By just looking at the box score it appears as if JMU just ran all over W&M's defense by ending up with 271 rushing yards, with only 69 passing yards. While it also appears as if JMU's defense was able to contain Grimes and the W&M running game and force W&M to pass and it appears as if they couldn't do enough to win the game, congrats to JMU and their fans)

I'm just happy ODU showed we can hang with a UD who was the top ranked CAA team (#7 in FCS top 25) going into week 4. I no longer live in the 757 so for me I want to find a way to watch both home and away games.

Had a bunch of players with positive drug tests - including starting QB Justin Thorpe, who has been suspended for 5 games.
The 5 game suspension means that this is his second offense - embarrassing.

Yep, this could kill JMU's season, even though they don't really rely on passing the ball much. With that said I wouldn't want an unproven QB to go up against Richmond, Maine, Villanova, @ ODU, & @ New Hampshire.
Here's a link to an article about the suspension:

They don't pass the ball much because Thorpe (although no Rodney Landers) is a huge threat on the ground.
I'm not sure if Jace Edwards fits the bill in that regard.
Honestly, I hope this forces them to pass more. If they have any hope of going anywhere this season, they will eventually have to show the ability to be dangerous through the air.

A little off topic but I figured it worth mentioning. Old Dominion alumni Justin Verlander has a 24-5 record, 2.40 ERA, 250 strikeouts, and a 0.92 WHIP. Yep, nothing like tailgating on a crisp, fall day and then heading into a sold out stadium to watch your Alma Mater play.
I'm assuming both Northeastern & Hofstra didn't have the fan support/revenue they needed to keep their programs afloat. Sucks because both schools will be left behind whenever re-alignment takes effect at the D-1 AA level.

Well, I don't know about Hofstra but unlike the rest of the CAA, we have D1 hockey to support and in New England that's a much higher priority, so that combined with low attendance/sucking = kill the football program. I mean to be honest, it would've been hard to convince me to go to an FCS game when all my friends get to see FBS but would be nice.

ODU dominated that game, and had a chance to put Towson away early in the 3rd quarter after we recovered the onside kick, but Vaughn was not able to hold onto the pass in the end zone, which would have made the game 42-24. Congrats to Towson and their fans, y'all hung in there and never gave up. I hope the defensive coaches for ODU teach our guys how to tackle and not just try to strip the ****ing ball which allows the offensive player to gain several more yards and score!

Its a game every JMU fan is concerned about because I'll be honest I was one of the people who thought ODU would be a bottom 3 CAA team this year.

late to the party but JMU Alum and season ticket holder here..
The only game left on the schedule that I'm potentially worried about is ODU. Their players are going to be some hyped that they may come out of the gate a little slow. I could see some early personal foul penalties against them as well. URI doesn't stand a chance in Bridgeforth. Mickey knows exactly how to gameplan against UNH and we match up very well against them. Who knows about UMass.
I think JMU finishes 9-2 and just misses getting a seed.
Also, never listen to Dukes n Skins - kid has no idea what he's talking about

I'm in 407 row F - 2 tickets. I've sat in the endzone every game because my roommate who has the other ticket still has a girlfriend at JMU so we sit in the student section. I went up to my seats a couple times to check out the views and they're amazing. Highly recommend that section if you're looking for a good location in the upper deck.

Today's loss by W&M eliminated them from the playoffs, and Delaware's loss may have eliminated them as well, even though they may sneak into the playoffs if they win out, which will be tough with having to go to Towson, and then hosting Richmond & Villanova.
Towson took another step to prove they are legit and will be a playoff team this year.
ODU bounced back after last week's nightmare finish to pound Villanova and clinch a winning season in their 1st season in the CAA and to keep playoff hopes alive. All we have to do is win 2 out of our final 3 and we should be in at 8-3; however, doing so will not be an easy task with hosting JMU & Richmond in the next 2 weeks, and then traveling up I-64 to take on W&M.

Nope, and it's been made even harder with last week's meltdown.
Going into this season I said I would be happy with 5 wins, and ecstatic with 6 wins. We're at 6 wins and I'm ecstatic that we'll have at least a winning season in our first year in the CAA, and any win from here on out is gravy to me.
I know the team doesn't have this same mindset and they are set on making the playoffs, which would be great, but I'm not going to get my hopes up prematurely.
Wilder has built this program up the right way, playing lower opponents and raising the player's confidence and getting them to buy into his system. It doesn't hurt that we are in the heart of one of the largest, if not the largest, hotbeds for high school football in the Mid-Atlantic Region. This program is only going to continue to go up from here, and the sky is the limit.

Rgr, concur with all. It's so great to see the Monarchs doing so well. When I was going to school there, it seemed that having a football program would be an unrealized dream. Also, you are dead on WRT the recruiting area. It's nice to glean some of the Hampton Roads-area studs from Techs and Madison's of the region.

Well no one thought that Towson or ODU would do much this year and both teams are in the top 25 and in the top 5 of the conference. While W&M was the highest ranked team in the conference starting the season and now there's no way they stay in the top 25 after yesterday.

Towson did beat ODU; however, I hope ODU has another shot at Towson because everything went right for Towson in order to win that game and 9.9 times out of 10 ODU wins the game; but, on October 15th Towson escaped Norfolk with a win. I would love to see those two teams play again in the playoffs.

I think we would've won. Although, our WRs in that game had some big drops so it wasn't all on having a backup QB in there. But I thought Towson might be for real after the UMD game. They played well enough to win, but just had too many turnovers.

You have to put in a bid and a team with a worse record can host a playoff game if they outbid a team with a better record, or if a team doesn't put in a bid at all, they won't be hosting a game.

Found this little piece...
http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfoot2/news/newstest.aspx?id=4449982
Towson, MD (Sports Network) - Growing up in Baltimore, Terrance West was very familiar with the struggles that had plagued Towson's football program the past couple of seasons.
However, the fact that the Tigers had won a combined three games the past two years didn't matter to the now freshman running back.
"It reminded me of high school, because I went to a high school that had a losing record," West said. "We're trying to build, if you go to a program that's already winning then you're not building or striving for anything. He (coach Rob Ambrose) was trying to build, and I love it, I love playing for Towson University."
The feeling is mutual, Towson loves having West carry the ball.
For all of his efforts, which include scoring more touchdowns than Towson's entire team did last year, West is a heavy favorite to win the first-ever Jerry Rice Award (sponsored by Fathead.com), which is presented to the FCS' Most Outstanding Freshman

If I had to guess I would bet that y'all did not put in a bid to host a playoff game. With the lackluster attendance you all have had I doubt it's worth even having a home game. You all only had 8,366 for the New Hampshire game which is sad, especially given the magnitude of that game.

Yes. There should have been. But 70% of capacity is not "sad". Especially for a student population that had not seen a team (lacrosse, Football, or basketball) come close to winning anything. It's not like Towson has a proud athletic tradition to be proud of outside of:
Gary Neal
Dave Megget
Sean Landetta
and Jermon Bushrod
The new university administration has really made a push towards improving the athletic teams.

November-17th-2011, 12:53 PM
I guess I have higher standards when it comes to supporting your athletic programs at ODU. I'm use to sell outs for every football game, great atmospheres both on campus before the game and inside Foreman Field for football games and in the Ted for basketball games.
I just find it mind boggling that a school that has over 20,000 students and I'm assuming thousands of local alumni that a stadium of only 11,000 can't be filled when your football team is having its best season ever.

November-17th-2011, 01:03 PM
Another problem with Towson is that its a pretty big commuter school. A ton of students live off campus or not close to the area on the weekends. But hopefully improving the athletic programs will attract more students to the games.

I could be wrong, but odu is a commuter school too i think
bushwack
November-17th-2011, 01:34 PM
ODU is a commuter school, but they have built 4 new dorms in the heart of campus which opened up 2 years ago. They're trying to attract and get more students to live on campus, but with the students coming from the surrounding cities it's cheaper to live at home and commute than to live on campus.
With that said, the support not only for ODU football the past 3 years has been completely astounding and incredible, but the support for other teams like basketball, field hockey, soccer, and baseball, the fan support continues to grow and grow. It does help when ODU continues to make history, especially in football by becoming the best start up program in NCAA history by going 9-2 in '09 and now becoming the first ever 3-year program to make the playoffs in their first year of eligibility.

Big week for JMU against UMass where a win will more than likely get JMU into the playoffs. With the return of Thorpe the offense has gone back to the run heavy spread option offense we run. If we win I have a pretty good feeling we'll also be hosting in the 1st round as its been known we were going to bid pretty good money to host

I wouldn't be so sure or confident if I were you, at least not yet.
Y'alls best win is against Liberty, who lost the Big South Championship today. Besides that JMU doesn't have an impressive win all season long.
I'd like to see JMU get in, and I'm not saying they're not going to get in, but I wouldn't go around saying they're getting in so confidently.
I can't wait for the FCS Bracket Selection Show tomorrow morning at 10 AM on ESPNU.
Right now a couple of projections have ODU playing App. State in Boone, NC on Dec. 3rd. I hope that's wrong, not because I don't want to play App. State, but I want a home playoff game. I hope our AD put in a large enough bid to get one, he said he was going all-in, I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

I have to agree. As sweet as a bye will be I'd almost rather have a home game. It would be incredible to win a National Championship in our first CAA year... but it's not exactly something I'm counting on. I don't think we win the big show until we put a defense on the field that consistently stops teams. Those games when we score 45+ would be a lot sweeter if the other team wasn't scoring 40+

Well major injuries have hit the defense hard this season in losing starting DE Turner before the season started, starting LB Arian, & our best CB Cowart in the 2nd game.
I think we have a shot this year because we have one of the most prolific offenses in the FCS, and with the way the true freshman Heinicke is playing we're going to be difficult to stop. Plus we know Wilder will have a few tricks up his sleeve in case of emergency.

I'm confused, wouldn't a Bye mean that they are a top 4 seeded team? In that case, seeded teams always used to get home games.

Same thing here man, just graduated this summer. We went through 4 years of construction all around the campus and now that we've graduated almost all of the dorms are brand new and our football team looks amazing...

No reason they shouldn't be in now. They really took care of business today.
The mock brackets I've seen have them hosting Norfolk St. with a possible 2nd round matchup against Towson. That'd be pretty awesome (and scary).

Exactly what I've been seeing too. They handled business today and the teams that they needed to lose to help out did. Only Chattanooga beating Wofford would have made the day better. Still hosting against NSU then a matchup against Towson would be something I'd be excited for.

No, the first round consists of 8 teams playing 4 games. The field has expanded from 16 to 20, and then the 2nd round is the round with 16 teams. 12 teams get a bye, and ODU should be one of those 12.

Well major injuries have hit the defense hard this season in losing starting DE Turner before the season started, starting LB Arian, & our best CB Cowart in the 2nd game.
It's always nice to have somebody who is actually in the area who can give an analysis of why the defense isn't performing since they don't play games on TV. I forgot that I'd seen Turner out at the bars with crutches back in May. Didn't realize how serious it was.
I'm surprised NSU had such a great season this year. I interned for the NSU strength and conditioning staff Fall '10, and despite being impressive specimens they were nothing to brag about on the field. Haven't really followed them this year with all the success at ODU.
Too bad we're not playing the Fall '10 team cause then I could give some kind of analysis. I will 100% be at that game though. It'll be an interesting dynamic at that game though. A lot of people at NSU have a real chip on their shoulder towards ODU, especially on the football team.
Why are there two 7-4 teams playing eachother while two 9-2 teams are playing eachother? How much of the decision to make NSU play ODU have to do with the distance?
Does it seem like ODU didn't get much respect because it's their first playoff berth? or is it just because our strength of schedule wasn't good enough?
bushwack
November-20th-2011, 09:48 AM
The distance had everything to do with matching up NSU and ODU. The NCAA doesn't have to pay nearly anything for travel expenses, and ODU will make a **** load of money like we do for every football game. I hate not having a bye, but I love getting a home game.

I enjoy football too. I go to some of my old high schools games.(sadly they lost in the final last night at home because the starting QB had a broken hand). I've seen a couple ODU b ball games on live streams this year and I noticed the Ted hasn't been looking so good. I'm not sure if that's the result of football or the low expectations for the b ball team after losing so many players.

FCS Playoffs Round 2 Schedule:
ODU @ #3 Georgia Southern @ 1:00 PM
Maine @ Appalachian State @ 2:00 PM
New Hampshire @ Montana State @ 3:00 PM
Lehigh @ Towson @ 3:30 PM
JMU @ #2 North Dakota State @ 4:00 PM
The CAA has a tough week ahead of themselves.
ODU is going to have its hands full with GSU's triple option offense that put up 21 points and over 300 yards against #2 Alabama two weeks ago. Game line: ODU +12
App. State is always tough at home and Maine will certainly have their hands full. Game line: Maine +3.5
New Hampshire will have a long flight out west to Montana and have a tough Montana St. team awaiting them. Game line: New Hampshire +6.5
Towson is the only CAA team that has a home game this week, but once again not an easy opponent in Lehigh. Game line: Lehigh +6.5
JMU's game depends on which JMU team shows up. They'll definitely need their defense this week going against an NDSU team that averages 33.5 ppg. Game line: JMU +9
Good luck to all the CAA teams out there, and let's hope we can prove Vegas wrong this weekend and come away with more than 1 win.

Maine 34 vs. App. State 12
Montana St. 26 vs. New Hampshire 25
Lehigh 40 vs. Towson 38
#2 NDSU 26 vs. JMU 14
Not a good week for the CAA. Only Maine survived the weekend to play in the quarterfinals next weekend.
I don't know about the other games, I did see Lehigh go for it on 4th down and complete a pass to the FB to ice the game, besides that I don't know what happened for the rest of that game or the others.
But as for the ODU game, I was at work and only could get the Game Cast of the game and was still on the edge of my seat. Both teams had 28 first downs each, both teams combined for over 1,150 offensive yards, but the game couldn't have featured two teams that score points differently. Ga. Southern only had 130 passing yards off of 11 attempts and 1 TD, and had 477 rushing yards and 7 TDs on 62 attempts. While on the other hand ODU had 211 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 29 rushing attempts, but threw the ball 45 times for 349 yards and 5 TDs. This game came down to capitalizing on the other team's turnovers, and ODU could not do that, and Ga. Southern were the better team today.
With that said I believe the future is bright for not only ODU (with Heinicke), but Towson with West, I don't know about their QB situation and what year he is. But the landscape for the CAA will change next year with UMass going to the MAC and FBS, and I believe but am not 100% that Rhode Island is gone as well; however, Georgia St. will be joining the CAA next year, even though I don't know if that's really an improvement to the CAA.
It's going to be a long wait until next September, but I guess it's now time to focus on CAA basketball, even though that appears it's going to be a rough season for all teams in the CAA this season.

Two words why Monarch fans should be very optimistic for the future, especially the next 3 years: Taylor Heinicke.
Here are the true freshman's final season statistics through 8.5 games:
68.7% on his passing attempts
2,380 passing yards (280 passing yards per game)
25 TDs
1 INT (Hail Mary vs. Towson)
365 rushing yards on 69 attempts (5.29 yards per attempt)
4 TDs
1 Fumble lost
Altogether Heinicke accounted for:
2,745 Total yards
29 TDs
2 Turnovers

With Maine's loss to Ga. Southern today that means all CAA teams are out of the tournament. I believe this is the earliest in a good number of years that all CAA teams have been eliminated in the FCS Playoffs. So far it's been all chalk through the first 3 rounds and the top 4 seeds remain.
