Like I said in the OP, it was a gradual accumulation of breaking the rules by several users that did it. Many people have posted things in The Own3d Thread that tempted the Mods to close the thread. But this time, on top of breaking the rules, your posts weren't funny -- and that's just not permitted.

The point is that you didn't "own the Own3d Thread", you simply showed your stupid-ass up at the right time.

Well, lets face it.. . the term "owned" is pretty much ten years played out, right?
The thread needed a name change... hint hint.


And for real, I HATE that thread is gone. I don't check it all the time,, sometimes I only look at it once a month or so.. but there's been plenty of nights when I'm winding down after a long day, and the mindless fun of that thread was great. I'd look at every post going back to the last one I saw however long ago. It has consistently been the best thread on the board, even if it's only to look at unsonny's Japanese kid sig... that damn thing is hypnotically goofy.

Maybe the mods could find someone who can be responsible for just monitoring that thread (or it's inevitable replacement)? Any volunteers?

Let me give some of you, especially some of the iggys that are going to continue to post in this bumped thread in typical ES-clueless fashion a guidance hint. :)

Do yourselves a favor and stop, since you seem too dense to think your way though this matter even though the obvious is right in front of you. I edited out a post I wrote last night that was harsher, that many of the people who have and are going to comment in here, past and present, would be well-served to start resisting posting every dumbass uninformed opinion you have (on many matters, actually) just because you have one, and instead just sit back and shut the **** up for awhile and observe (maybe even think). :evilg:

It's a good way to actually learn what might be going on regarding any subject---like just maybe sometimes waiting for any story to develop a bit before you spring into some opinionated version of the "oh! oh! I thinks I smell a pile-o-crap and must jump in to add my own sweet odor" mode :D. I

Absolutely, but what happened, DAN, is that any mod who has ever done this for years will get so tired of constantly policing that thread (that we all love--and most every mod here has a wicked and wild sense of humor, we aren't ****ing prudes or "natural censors"---and intelligent people should grok what that implies when we do take an action) and for the same reasons that end up causing the demise of many "chick" threads. :(

It's because there's always those dumbass posters who can't think OR follow endlessly repeated and always-there-for-the-reading rules, and the equally repeated failure of some of the membership in reporting violations (often deliberately so they can "get away with having sneaky fun" <eyeroll>) when we try to leave the matter up to youse guys.

A staff member can just get to a point where they say "**** it", these clowns aren't worth all the constant trouble if they can't get it right." I know I have, and I'm not the only one on staff over the history of ES--I really don't know of a mod ever that hasn't. And that "**** it" can come over what may seem rather minor out of context to people who don't have to go through this crap for the zillionth time. :)

It's just nother reason for "opinionators" to just stfu a bit, just every now and then :D, so they don't make it worse via their ignorance (whether understandable or not---and it's usually "not").

You totally have me there---and much of my work invloves dealing with children having various clinical diagnoses of behavioral issues (and ones who are just acting out per "normal") and their parents (who are usually the main focus of what needs to be "adjusted') so don't think that I don't make my share of jokes comparing them and other populations I work with to "internet posters." :D

And in such practices, the "interent posters" often suffer by such comparison in several areas. :pfft:

Anyway, I feel the need to point out that we seem to be lacking something important here, and that's something that will prevent someone who's stumbled upon ES for the first time from signing up and immediately destroying a thread that we've loved for years in his first two posts. That shouldn't be possible.

EDIT: Here I read through most of the thread only to just now find out there we're talking about two different instances. I'll leave this post up though, because I still think it's a concern. Can we somehow limit posting abilities for, say, the first 100 posts by any new member?

I hope I don't get banned for this post, but as a dedicated member, I'd like to make one final stand - then you can slap your Maxi Pad on me like you've been doing to everyone else (which includes good, thoughtful, contributing members of this forum). As a person in a military family, and having a mother that held two jobs, your scathing insults towards good members of this forum is (for lack of being able to use several other terms) - lame. If it's so difficult, I think there are others who camp on this forum enough that they'll have enough time to edit everything without their heads spontaneously combusting.

Okay, so I got that off my chest, if you Mods got bitched out by a higher-up then I can understand. But intimidating members of the forum with a slew of insults is sad.

That said, there's no doubt that we have respect for you guys, you do a good job, but right now it simply looks like perspective has been lost.

For every 1,000 posts in that thread, you might get one mistake. This here thread that I'm typing in right now was made in MAY. That's a pretty good gap, I don't see how it causes so much labor for you guys to police The Owned Thread. For the vast majority of the time - people "keep it clean" in that thread.

This all being said, I don't want to get banned :ols:, especially because I love talking to the guys in the MMA Thread (and there is a big UFC card coming up this Saturday). So I emphasize that I approve of the job the Mods do here (I'm not sucking up, I swear!). I like how this forum is policed, but there is no way in hell that you'll convince me that The Owned Thread was even remotely close to being difficult to moderate. Especially when you read some of the drivel in the Stadium.

I say give us one of the only havens we have from those nasty conversations in the political threads, or those every-day "best of" threads. If not, once again, RIP Owned Thread. (And perhaps RIP d0ublestr0ker0ll :ols:)

Is it really that serious ? It is just a thread about randomness that can be found all over the internet.

I don't get why the decision is in question. Rules were violated, end of thread/discussion. Perhaps if it had not happened several times before, perhaps if you guys tried to save the last offense...that didn't happen. He left it up, no one reported it and the thread died.

Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a silly thread that some people enjoyed and loved even. But the premise of the thread needed the members to police it to protect it. That didn't happen and here we are.

So alright, dimbulb. ;) But first, just so it's clear, I wasn't involved in the closing. Any mod might make such a decision and one did.

Now, what's "really sad" to me is when someone won't take endless hints about just sitting still and shutting up for their own good just because they HAVE to say the same damn thing one more time. And do so yet again without thinking fully on the matter and without all the information--even though they've been repeatedly made aware that such factors are involved.

And then you stand chagrined, wondering where the castigating tone comes from. :rolleyes:

Here's the first key part then--about the obviousness of the matter being right in front of you and others as I posted earlier, yet missed along with all my other comments being ignored by you (who I love as a poster)....so...

Look at this thread. It was made some time back....when the "owned" thread was closed in the same manner. Right. Yet...ready for it?...oh wow!!!...did it remain closed? NO!

It was OBVIOUSLY reopened. And that's not the first time this cycle has occured. If some people paid ANY kind of attention beyond serving their own need to pontificate at all costs, maybe they would be aware of such stuff.

The thread has been closed several times, temporarily, to wake some people up since nothing else works and it has ALWAYS been reopened though we will as a staff may debate it at times. This time, when PCS did it and let us know, it would have been the same. Now I have my doubts.

We get this thread bumped instead, which then becomes a rule-breaking diversion (read rule 18) in people going on about board management and mourning its "death", actually making some staff more likely to want to leave it closed longer. This continues even after my half-fun half-hard-ass attempts to try to get the attention of those hard to reach any other way, to still the white noise.

But despite my efforts, there's always some (and I'm disappointed one turns out to be you, dsr) who feel they have to push it so they can "speak their piece" cuz God knows they'll just implode if they did try to stfu and just go about their own biz.

Now if the mods really are tempted to leave if closed permanent, it would mostly be on you DSR. Seriously.

I'm also tempted to permanently ban you for such willful ignorance and refusal to follow instructions from staff or even get a clue by thinking things out for yourself. This is not martyrdom for a great cause for cripe's sake :ols:, it's more lemming-like.

But I am going not going to endorse either a penalty for you or keeping the thread closed permanently. Of course, I am only one person on the staff. :)

With that, I am done.

My final words now are to suggest folks read rule 18 (gasp! read the rules?) and note the proper way to discuss board management with the staff. Were anyone so interested, and knowing the rules after years of being here, they'd have PM'ed a mod, and likely would have been told what's up. So, DSR, you're still one of my favorite posters, but for ****s sake. :)

Read my reply, and then go read rule 18 on the proper way to discuss board management with staff--noting the penalty for not doing do--and feel fortunate (assuming you like this place) that you're not getting kicked for a number of reasons. And I'm sorry to hear about your personal issues---I know those specific ones quite well, myself. Hope things go as well as possible.

I hadn't singled anyone out initially with my remarks, but you came at me personally in a very insulting fashion (see rule 5). And if you don't know the difference between castigating a generic TYPE of poster and individually identifying one you're attacking by name, you really aren't thinking.

DSR, you really seem unaware of just how insulting you were beyond the maxi-pad crap, and what it means rule-wise that you directed it specifically at me and only to attack or impugn my take on the matter (a move that breaks another rule, and from a position you ain't even qualifed to speak well on, as I pointed put to others before you even "went"),

my comments included the kind of over the top grousing (fully justified, let there be no doubt ;)) that I do here at times in in order to make a colorfully :) castigating point---done very deliberately but with no real animosity as most everyone here knows by now---and all without ever singling anyone out personally.

It's not that such gets to me at some serious emotional level---but I don't take crap from anyone lightly, either...so yeah, bending over backwards for you, even while being harsh simultaneously, and yet taking that type commentary from you...it ain't something that goes down smooth. but let's let it go. what anyone else on staff or in the membership has to say about it will be up to them.

Sorry about the rant, everyone. I went too far in trying to put things in to perspective. My bad, Jumbo. I'll balance out the malice by stating that I think your dramatic style of writing is aesthetically pleasing (unless it's directed towards me of course). I tried to sort of emulate your style of emphatically going-off in order to "get through to you" in some weird abstract way, but I ended up getting too aggressive in haste, definitely not what I usually do.

It's really is just that simple. Just like the rules. Doesn't matter how "minor" it was,(and others like it there or elsewhere),it was against the rules. Period. People know better yet there it was. If we can't trust some of you rocket scientists not to post the stuff against the rules much less report it,(and again,now pathetically desperate do you have to be not to report something like that?),despite the thread title and knowledge of the rules,why should I leave it open? Just one more thread in all the other threads we have here on the board in its various forums that needs to be consistently monitored by those of us who do this on our own limited spare time.
