http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/jenkinss-progress-lands-him-with-redskins/2011/06/22/AGMjhUmH_story.htmlGood story :)
2 things of note:
The Redskins plan to move Jenkins from tackle to end, but Jenkins said he doesn’t mind. Nor does it bother him that an end in a 3-4 defense mostly is asked to take on double-teams to free linebackers, who chase the quarterback. Taking on multiple blockers at Clemson while Da’Quan Bowers posted 151 / 2 sacks got Jenkins used to that. Bowers was drafted by Tampa Bay 10 picks after Jenkins.Listening Fat Al?
Also, I can't even fault him for missing the team practices:
Jenkins said he has missed all of the Redskins’ informal workouts this summer because he was 12 credit hours shy of completing his degree in sociology. When he realized he wouldn’t be able to report to Redskins Park because of the lockout, he went to his parents and told them he would remain at Clemson for the summer to take three more classes.
“Finishing my degree, it’s something I think about every day,” Jenkins said. “It hurt me not being [at the workouts], but I felt like this was something I should do. I don’t feel like it was selfish to keep pursuing my degree. If it came off as selfish, then I apologize. But football’s not forever.”
EDIT: TB's D-line w/ Bowers and Gerald=scary.

Anyone else read that as Bowers having 151 sacks? lol...

I really liked that he stayed back to complete his degree. While it would have been great to have him up here for the camps, I like that he kept his eye on the prize and completed what he set out to do 4 years ago and made good use of his "time off".

I agree, it shows me that he is a finisher and intelligent. He knows football isn't forever and is already planning for life after football. As a player, I don't know a lot about him, but reading these types of things impresses me with his attitude.

Yeah, bad spacing = confusion. Obviously should be 15 1/2.

It's a shame that the NFL doesn't have a progam like MLBs where draftees who didn't finish their education can return to finish it after their carer. But any edge given to him by attending the players only minicamps can only enhance his multi million dollar contract. A degree in Sociology may not yield such lucrative results. If he returned because he promised his parents that he would get his degree, then kudos to him. I look forward to watching this young man play either way

I like the fact that he didn't argue his point that finishing his degree was not selfish, rather said, IF it came off as being selfish, he is sorry.
Personally, I believe finishing his degree is a great thing. He has a long career ahead of him, taking the summer/lockout to finish his degree shows that he is a smart kid.

Or written as 15.5 sacks, just saying. LOL

I've always been a fan of Jenkins from the day he was picked. Could never understand why some thought he was in danger of being cut, he seemed like a better fit in a 3-4 than a 4-3to me anyway.

The lockout itself should teach these kids that getting a degree is extremely important.
The NFL is a short term lottery for these kids. But, they still have 40 years of living after the NFL to support.

Jenkins is saying all the right things. Nothing wrong with finishing his degree, and he is 100% right when he stated that football doesn't last forever. Nothing he has missed has been that crucial to his success.
The kid is smart, and seems perfectly happy to be a work horse while others get the glory. He realizes that he serves himself by serving the team, and his success is tied to the team's success in a team sport.
Hopefully, he becomes a great Redskin.

It sounds like you're confusing Jarvis Jenkins with Jeremy Jarmon.

I think it's pretty cool that Jenkins was picked 10 spots ahead of Bowers (who essentially reaped the benefits from Jenkins play). Just goes to show that the scouts recognize hard work, even if someone else receives the spotlight for it. I doubt anyone had Jenkins being drafted ahead of Bowers. Kudos to our scouts, especially if this kid has as good of a career as I believe he will.
Anyone else have a feeling this could be THE draft that we'll be admiring 5 years, or so, from now? you know... the precursor to the "2015 Superbowl Champion Washington Redskins" special. :D
"The DC Fix"? naa... "The road to glory?" naa... ehh its early.. :p

To be fair, a lot of people were worried about Bowers's knee. However, I am putting a lot of trust in Shanallen again. It was a GIVEN that if Gabbert dropped to us, then Gabbert would be our quarterback for the next decade. Nope. Not only did we trade down, the pick went to the defense to find someone to boost Orakpo and then the NEXT pick went to do the same thing.

Too funny. When I logged on a second ago I instantly realized what I had done. Guess this group is too quick to expect a mistake like that to go unnoticed.

You can't imagine my surprise when we traded down. I was literally jumping up and down when Gabbert fell. But lo and behold, we traded down. I am pleased with the outcome, and glad we got Hankerson, Paul, and Helu/Royster. But our D needed a big upgrade, and we got it.

Haha love the optimism. If both Kerrigan and Jenkins become long-term contributors and at least two of the later round picks become starters, then this will have been a very successful draft.
Now if Kerrigan and Jenkins become the cornerstones (along with RakAttack) of a top D, Hankerson becomes our #1 WR, Helu puts up a few 1000+ yard seasons, some of the other guys become contributors (especially the S, CB, OT, or DE), and we win a few division titles and then some... then this will be a legendary Redskins draft.
... you got me way too excited... damn offseason
