With Sam Huff back on the radio this season, I feel that he needs his own thread. We at ES will use this thread to post quotes from the genius that is Sam Huff.
A couple gems from last year.
"The lineman should try and sack the quarterback on this play"
"Its third down so what they should do is try to get a first down on this play."

He's a senile, old man. He says odd things. No reason to belittle him as "the genius that is Sam Huff".

Can't be worse than John Madden...
“The goal of football is to score more points than your opponent.”
“Wasn’t “Vixen” the name of one of Santa’s reindeer?”
“Gado needs to learn that the second you stop moving your feet, your gonna get tackled.”
“Whenever you talk about a Mike Shanahan offense, you always talk about his offense.”
“That wasn’t a boom! Al, that was more like a WACK!”
“Here’s a guy who when he runs, he moves faster.”
"I still don't know how that referee changed that call. He was right there - the referee has one responsibility and that's the quarterback - he's the guy standing right behind the quarterback. He sees that play and called it a fumble - that was his call on the field. His call - not a back judge, a side judge or an umpire - the referee made the call. Now he's the same guy that goes and looks at it during a challenge. On the field he made the call a fumble and I didn't see enough evidence with the pictures to change that from a fumble to an incomplete pass. I know the "tuck rule" and the arm going forward - all that stuff - but I still didn't think there was enough visual evidence for him to change that."
“I guarantee you one thing, Jack Tatum never hit anyone from behind.”
“From the waist down, Earl Campbell has the biggest legs I have ever seen on a running back.”

Amen to that. I celebrated the day he moved on from TV. I'll take Gruden any day over Madden.
I'm sure for someone who's never watched a down of football (or any other sport) he was alright, but after a season or two of that, I don't know how anyone could listen to that guy.

As long as he's in that booth, he, as well as the Washington Redskins, are saying (albeit indirectly) that he's still competent to do color-commentary on the Redskins Radio Network. When he, or the Redskins, concede that his time is up, then you won't see this anymore.
For the record, I adore Sam and Sonny. Sam, though, is well past his prime and needs to hang up the mic.

Some of us just hold on to the last pieces of glory from the good old days. I used to mock Herzog and then when he was replaced, I was heartbroken. I will be sad when Sam hangs up the mic as well, he may say some goofy things, but he is our goof. I guess I always had a soft spot for Madden but the old Madden. Classic Madden and Summerall calling the games of our glory, I would love to see some stats from their partnership in the 80's and see a percentage on how many Redskins games they called compare to other teams in that stretch.

I stopped listening when they kicked out Frank Herzog. But I was at the beach 2 years ago and couldn't get the Saints game so I was forced to listen on the radio. I had no idea how bad Sam was, it's like he knew nothing about the game. When the Saints tied it with just over 2 minutes left he was actually warnng that they would try an onsides kick. Again the game was tied with a little over 2 minutes.
It was really sad.

Sam is hilarious to listen to, did you hear what he said after the D. Hall touchdown return against Dallas?
"Dadadadada Dallas should have just killed the clock,an an an and they got beat on a play like that, I mean that's that's just great thing for Washington Redskins, but that was a dumb play call I think on Dallas' part."
Couldn't stop laughing, he's a good man, but I agree, he shouldn't be on the radio anymore.

Really, how much actual insight do you get from even the so-called top NFL commentators? Not all that much. Even less for local radio guys. So who cares if Huff lost a step? You're watching the game on TV anyway.

Do you like Duke Vitale as well?

I think everyone has forgotten how really really really good Madden was for about two decades. Towards the end, he and Summerall got kind of sad - Pat couldn't follow the action and John just relied on schtick. And he never really clicked with Michaels. But I learned a ton from John Madden over the years.
Two things hurt Madden historically:
1. He was old and schticky on tv for a lot of years
2. He inspired a whole generation of imitators who didn't do his act nearly as well - the Bill Maases of the world.

I don't think Vitale was ever a good color guy. He was decent when paired up with Valvano for a brief time as Valvano actually made him focus on the game and not his schtick.
In fairness - when I was in high school, Vitale was really important in making college games seem important. And he was fantastic at hyping college guys into superstars - back when college had superstars. Vitale was able to make mid-season college games seem extremely important.
Vitale's biggest problem is that the game left him. It's really hard to do your diaper dandy and PTPer schtick when both sides are playing five freshman - none of whom can throw an entry pass. So, he spends an inordinate amount of time talking about the juniors who stick around in the ACC or - in desperation - the coaches. He used to be able to build a player up slowly over four years.

I thought Vitale was excellent in the 90's but the 4-Letter, as Czabe would say, just shoved him down your throat, so it gets old, Chris Berman anyone? So, if the talent does not keep reinventing themselves, they become victim to all the media tools we have at out disposal. I remember how SportsCenter used to be unique, and I would plan my morning or evening classes around it, but who cares now, I can pull up everything online or tune into their News channel. I could not even tell you who the hosts are.
Madden and Summerall hold so many fond memories for me. I cannot be sure but I wonder if they started the whole Team 1, Team 2 thing as far as commentators went. Were people so excited when their team got them, you knew it was a big game. I know Summerall used to be with Brooksheir but I am too young to remember all the teams and how the telecasts worked in the 70's.

The thing that Madden did in his day was to make the game fun. When John Facenda was still narrating NFL Films like they were war documentaries instead of games and commentators were oh so serious about how huge and important and complex the football games were, here comes Madden showing that it really wasn't rocket science and that you didn't have to take yourself too seriously in the booth.
And LKB is right -- he knew the game too. But he knew how to keep it in the proper perspective.
I was a Madden fan right to the end.

Madden was gold in the 80's and part of the 90's. Is it any coincidence that I began to tire of Madden's schtick once the Redskins were officially off the top shelf of NFL teams? I don't know how much Madden "lost" and how much it was me just tired of him slurping other teams and not my team anymore.
As for Huff, what I remember him saying every friggin week is "I've never seen that before" or "that's the greatest play ever". I thought it was schtick for a while but I guess maybe he's senile now and does mean that stuff. It just got very annoying to listen to. Couple that with Jurgensen's boredom in the booth and it just seems like this booth should have been retired in it's entirety after 2003 instead of just dumping Herzog (who also btw was going through the motions his last few years).

Madden became an industry. That doesn't help things.
In the early part of his career, he was just one of the guys in the Miller Lite Less Filling/Taste Great commercials - albeit the "star" who burst through a wall at the end or whatever. By the 90s, he was the Tuff Actin' Tinactin/Ace Hardware/EA Sports/Rent-a-Center/Outback/Madden Cruiser/Turducken/All Madden machine. At some point, he had to shoe-horn his schtick into everything because he had to keep the family business going.
Vitale and Berman have fallen into that same trap - though I don't get Berman. His schtick seemed dated by 1992 and he doesn't come across anywhere near as likeable as Vitale or Madden. It's impossible to find anyone having a personal interaction with Vitale who doesn't come away loving him.
I'm tired of Vitale as an announcer, but I want him to have a long and happy retirement in Florida. I want Berman to be eaten by wolverines.

I don't disagree. I think it's time for him to move on, but I've also found that men who tend to know a lot about a certain subject, they speak about them in simplicities. They are all about basics, because that's where the details come from. I loved listening to Madden right up until his retirement. And Sam and Madden are close to each other in age and football iq. Basics and detail, that's what they look at to know how well a football team is performing. Because when you've mastered them, you can focus on other stuff.

I just met Sam huff this weekend at the csa show. He was one of the best autograph guests that I have met with. He didn't rush me through the line and he talked about the redskins and their defense. He was funny and totally candid. He said exactly what he thought. Great guy and one of the greatest players ever.
