The one we'd now have if it wasn't for those meddling, no good hicks from TN.
Hail.

I voted for Cam. Assuming that by success, you mean personally.
The Panthers will suck again this year. No WR, running threat will be cut in half, and the line is still suspect. But that doesn't mean Newton won't perform. His scrambling ability will keep the Panthers in games, but like most Rookie Quaterbacks, his arm will help them lose some games. Ponder might not see too much time, Locker will be okay, and Dalton will be in some serious trouble because the Bengals might lose their top three receivers and he has to play the Steelers and Ravens four times  .

I am not a big Cam Newton fan, but I think he will have the most success. Based on that list, Locker might be the only one who get's as much playing time. I might change my opinion after free agency.

I said Locker. He has CJ behind him running the ball, they have a good line and some decent receivers. Plus, he plays the Jags, Colts and Texans twice a year. with only the Colts with a fearsome pass rush.
Dalton will have to play the Steelers and Ravens twice along with an improving Browns defense.
Newton will have to play the Falcons, Bucs and Saints. While none of them have defenses that scare anyone, they all have offenses that can put up way more points than the Panthers. Plus, if Steve Smith leaves, the Panthers don't have jack in the way of WRs.
Ponder has to play the Packers, Bears and Lions defenses. Enough said.

I love lamp -- b/c they're all going to struggle this year. I have serious doubts about all of the QBs to come out this past year...

Ponder...got the best RB in the game, decent help in the passing game, and a decent defense to bail him out when needed.

Do any of them play against the NFC West?

Agreed. They're going to feed AD (with Toby Gerhart to spell him), and he has some dynamic weapons with Harvin, Shiancoe and Rice (if they resign him).

I'll go with Locker. Though Gabbert should be among the choices IMO

Does success mean wins or statistics? Jake Locker and Christian Ponder (presuming the Vikes don't sign-and-start McNabb) will have more wins, certainly, but I think Cam Newton will be featured on far more highlight reels and will have a couple spectacular performances.
I think when this year is all said and done, Cam Newton will have proven himself to be a prospect worthy of the #1 pick -- and I strongly doubt that there will be another QB that will perform in a manner to be retroactively considered as such

I asked the mods if they would edit to include Gabbert but they couldn't.

With the lockout I suspect Cam Newton might be the only one who gets significant playing time. The rest might well be holding a clip board this year.

And since both teams are running new offenses the rookie QBs have gained some ground against an outside candidate because of scheme knowledge.
I think Cam has done an outstanding using the lock-out to prepare for the season.
I'm surprised more coaching staff's didn't try/set up something similar w/ their QBs.
But, I still don't think Cam starts.
My money is on Chuds acquiring Derek Anderson.

Derek Anderson? Thats desparation stuff right there if a team is starting him.

The Panthers may be in the market for a placeholder til Cam gets ready.
Derek would be cheap, he knows the system and has been productive(pro-bowl) under the OC.

Ponder. He was considered to be one of the most "pro-ready" QB's coming out by scouts, and he's going into what I would consider to be the best situation.

It sounds like Locker might sit for a good bit FWIW.

Agreed on all counts. He was my vote (and my hope to draft at 16).

Tris, do you think Ponder or Kerrigan will have a better year? I'm not going to turn this into a "we made the smarter choice" debate because we have no idea how Ponder would have done in our system or Kerrigan in another, but who do you think has a better year this year?

Right - but he has been flat terrible since that one year. His last year in Arizona he was just bad.
I cant see him getting a shot to start this year anywhere - a camp invite sure and he may make a roster as a 3rd string contingency guy but I cant see more than that.

For me it doesn't and that's exactly the type of QB mentor I would bring in to start a few games until Cam is ready.
One that not only knows the offense but has worked directly under current OC/Chudzinski.

I have to say Locker. I also feel that if Tenn didn't draft him at 8, he would be a Skin now.

Locker simply because the Titans have CJ and a solid D. Carolina is terrible and Cam isn't ready. Ponder is behind McNabb. Dalton and the Bungles will be terrible.

Locker will be behind Hasselbeck in all likelihood.

The battle to be Carolina's starting quarterback just got more crowded.
The Panthers have signed Derek Anderson to a free agent contract, allowing the veteran quarterback to battle with former Notre Dame standout Jimmy Clausen and #1 overall pick Cam Newton for the starting spot.
Anderson showed up with cleats and a number 3 jersey at practice Monday night. Clausen was taking first team reps with Newton working with the 2nd team. Based on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, Anderson is not able to start practicing with the Panthers until Thursday.
Anderson was the man who kept Brady Quinn off the field in Cleveland, where his offensive coordinator--Rob Chudzinski--is now the man guiding the Panthers offense.
The 28-year-old Anderson is in his seventh NFL season.
I think this is a great move to help the development of Cam Newton in Chudz offense.

Not sure why he isn't an option but from what I've heard...saying Gabbert has looked awful in camp and in their first preseason game is generous

Thanks for the vids dgreenie. Awesome stuff.
Let me preface by saying that I don't follow college football AT ALL. So this is the first time I've seen a couple of these guys. Anyway, some (train of) thoughts:
I thought Locker looked the sharpest overall. I thought Cam Newton had the best one throw (3:15). Gabbert had a bit of that deer-caught-in-the-highlights look to him. By far the weakest performance of the group. In the little bit of Ryan Mallet in there, he kind of reminded me of Drew Bledsoe. But maybe it's just more super-tall QB+Pats uni, than his actual game/performance.
Ponder might be the one who intrigues me the most though. I heard so much talk of him being a reach at 12, he was really a 2nd rounder, etc. But from that one video right there, he belongs in the discussion with the other four. Some great improvisations and great mobility in the pocket. The one thing I question with him is his arm strength. His throws really don't seem to have that zip on them, at all. I was actually thinking Chad Pennington while watching the vid and now I've gone to walterfootball.com (http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2011cponder_greg.php), and that's who they used as his NFL player comparison.
(Sidenote: I was thinking about starting a "Rookie Watch" thread a few days ago. All rookies, not just QB's. I'm real curious to keep up with Green, Jones, Ingram, Fairley, Miller, Peterson, etc do. I found this year's draft class particularly interesting for some reason.)
