View Full Version : Dear Coach Shanahan: A List For You

Shanahan,
I hear you're going to make a splash in free agency. Will you do me a favor? We suck. Can you fix that? I have a to-do list for you and would like you to use it. OK? Thanks.
To-Do List:
1. Tell Brian Orakpo it's time. This defense revolves around him.
2. Sign Braylon Edwards. Why? Because he's a star and needs another chance to prove it.
3. Resign Santana. Braylon will benefit from that.
4. Sign Vince Young. Crazy? Make him 3rd string. He knows he won't start immediately but it puts his play making skills on our team. You're a hard ass, you can handle him. Think he's not worth the gamble? Go talk to Andy Reid. He was a step ahead of you on McNabb. I think he knows risk vs reward.
5. Don't release Albert Haynesworth. Worthless he may be to us, but not other teams in the NFL.
6. Our O-Line needs another piece. I hear some are on sale.
7. Nnamdi Asomugha is worth the contract. Don't believe me? Ask the thirteen, yes 13 reception he allowed last year. That's 16 games of playing half the field. Make it happen.
8. We may need a Qb, but I'll let you figure that one out.
If you are confused just give this to Bruce.
See you in September.

To-Do List:

Vinny created yet another account here on ES.
I could be down with Nmandi...but he's going to cost a fortune. That money could be better spent elsewhere. Braylon Edwards? The guy who constantly underperforms and has terrible hands? Yeah, great addition. Fat Al needs to get the hell out of town. He's a lazy, self-righteous cancer. Sign Vince Young....he's probably better than Beck and Grossman, but he's still not a long-term solution.
Your list needs work, Vinny.

Expect #7 is an extremely rare talent and ELITE player, quite possibly the BEST player in the NFL. And while you might have been able to say the same for Haynesworth, there is no off the field issues, and his job doesn't revolve around being 300+ lbs. The issue with getting Nnamdi is exposing D.Hall.

I think it's just a salary cap thing personally. I think the vast majority of football fans are aware the guy is a true talent. Although I have seen posts here questioning his work eithic and character, which blew my mind. Never ceases to amaze me how some see things the way they do.

I'm OK with except for the "worth the contract" part lol...he very well may be worth the contract, but I don't want us being the team offering him that contract. If it's possible to get Asomugha for a reasonable contract, then go for it. But let's face it, it won't be, not by a long shot.

Uhm, no. Certainly not where I'm concerned.
My issue with Asomugha is he's 30 and would want a monster contract. We're rebuilding. Aside from the fact we have a kid of our own who's been waiting in the wings for two years now in Kevin Barnes, we aren't an Asomugha from challenging. FAR from. 30 year old FA's don't fit the model of a true rebuild for the future that's gona' be another few years in the making. Much less ones on major contracts.
Hail.
*Edit* And even if we weren't rebuilding, and Asomugha was seen as a quality vet (which he is) to take us over the edge, Haslett likes to play more zone coverage than anything else. The Raiders one of the best man corners out there. As top notch as he is, he has a different skill set to the scheme we've put in place.

Vince Young is not a leader. This guy throws tantrums when he doesn't get his way and sets a poor example. Comparing his case to Vick is ridiculous and a pipe dream. Beck may not end up being the starter or any good, but the guy is leading by example and hustling. I do agree getting help for the OLine.

We are a zone blizt team now, which means we don't always put our CB on Island so why would you sign a man-to-man specialist. Signing a big name CB doesn't automatically put you in playoff contentions. The last two suppose great CB's to be plucked from their original teams were Nate Clements and Champ Bailey. Their teams haven't be a factor towards winning championships. If you are a complete team and need an upgrade and have cap room to spare without having to destroy your roster or locker room then go for it, but for the Redskins we are not one player away or one season away from greatness. This guy has played his entire career for the Raiders and he's tired of losing and wants to play for an contender so their is no way he would sign with us anyways.
Now I have with these suppose new rules and having to pay players 90% cash of the CAP, then we may go out of way to sign a few big names but I just hope we are not stupid and forget the guys that we drafted that deserve a big deal like LL. Even with those signings we could still be short of the 90% threshold so how should the Skins spend their money?

Orakpo is great. If it weren't for being held on almost every play last year, Brian Orakpo would have had at least 25 sacks. But even though he didn't, he still made the pro bowl. As a fan, I'm very concerned about Mike Shanahan's confidence in John Beck being our quarterback. The guy has done nothing but hold a clipboard during his NFL career. We need to either keep McNabb, or go after a veteran QB in free agency. To help aid on the defensive front, I would like to see the Redskins sign Cullen Jenkins and Kris Jenkis. The only question is, which one will wear #77?

Everything else will take care of itself. But if you cant run the ball and stop the run "up here" you'll never win. Period.
Think we need a QB? See Mark Rypien. He had an amazing O-line that ANY of us could have thrown behind.

The issue with getting Nnamdi is exposing D.Hall.
I like D. Hall as our CB2 behind Nnamdi. I think he is an above-average man-coverage corner, and makes plays on the ball in the air better than most. Not as good in zone coverage or tackling in the open-field, but we could conceivably cover these weaknesses up by keeping him out of potentially dangerous situations. Theoretically, with a true ball-hawk FS in Atogwe, his range, instincts, ability to find the ball, and familiarity with Jim Haslett's scheme would allow us to keep Nnamdi, D. Hall and Landry close to the line of scrimmage pre-snap and back up blitzes with tight, physical man coverage. I would feel confident in those guys winning on forced hots/quick-reads with reliable help over-the-top. Who knows...we might even get some more turnovers too (sorry Carlos, I'll defend your man-coverage skills 'til the day I die, stone-hands). This would also make other coverage packages available and help disguise them at the same time, assuming everyone else is doing their jobs...and would hopefully reduce the number of open-field tackle attempts D. Hall would be asked to make.
In regards to the OP:
To-Do List:
I'll play.
1. I know what you're trying to say. It's time for him to unleash everything we know he has inside him on every play and become dominant. Play through the holds and any doubles/triples, do WHATEVER he's gotta do before/during the season to be a sack/play-changing pressure threat on every play of every defensive series. He should be settling for nothing less than being the best player on the field every time he suits up.
2. Signing a large able-bodied WR via free agency...not the worst idea if the price is right. Although I personally am and always have been a huge Randy Moss fan, and I think he can still change defenses and take the top off any given play, when motivated. Plaxico is looking more and more enticing when I think how well Vick turned out and how much I don't want Plax to end up somewhere else in the NFCE, again. Hate it or love it, he was right when he said he was the best player on the Giants Super Bowl team. Consistent production. I love Santonio Holmes too; young, big-game experience, playmaker. I'm not sold on Sidney Rice or Braylon Edwards.
3. Re-sign Santana. I agree wholeheartedly.
4. Not a Vince Young fan. Third string......maybe. On second thought......maybe not.
5. I'll agree. Only because some sick part of me wants to see the Lions make us an offer we can't refuse and then somehow motivate Haynesworth to be the final piece in a devastating defensive line that includes Haynesworth, Suh, and Fairley. Damn. That'd be an offensive line's worst nightmare in today's NFL.
6. This is hands-down our biggest need. I love young OL, they play harder and are less comfortable/more aware. Not always comfortable signing free agent OL, but if someone fits our scheme and his resume isn't littered with red flags, I suppose exceptions can be made. Next years' draft class should be lead by a LG with our first pick, if you ask me. Put someone next to Trent who can hold his own and lock the left side down. Perhaps pick up another G or C with another pick.
7. I love Nnamdi. Would make our secondary very exciting to watch.
8. McNabb would be the best QB under center week one. Beck could eventually perform better than McNabb did last year, taking everything into account, but that remains to be seen and my money would have liked to see him given the starting role if - and only if - McNabb gave it away again this year. I hate everything about Rex Grossman. I'm sorry; he looks like a douche and is a poor man's Trent Dilfer.

I think he might be saying that Nnamdi excels in man coverage while DeAngelo is better in zone. I think that was part of the reason Hall was so terrible in Oakland. Essentially we would be recreating the failed environment that the Raiders had.
