View Full Version : Now's the time to pursue Nnamdi Asomugha!

Now that the Texans are out of the running and Jets are evaluating their options, now is the time to aggressively pursue Nnamdi Asomugha. We're making incredible strides with our Defense in free agency and a shut down corner would really boost an already strong secondary.
Shanahan, Allen and Haslett have got to be at least pursuing this.

Tampa Bay just dropped a bomb on him, one that only 49ers can match. Jets can't match and will have to rely on him wanting to come to NY.
No way do I want this team involved in that kind of money.

He'll want way too much money. I'm happy with Hall, Wilson, and Barnes at CB. Ideally, I'd want to add another CB for depth, but we don't need to spend $12-$15 mil/yr on a 30y/o CB.

IF we're going to sign a big name dude, I could live with it being Asomugha. Unlike some of our reaches, this guy is in his prime and is a good citizen. He's not some fat, drunk, lazy POS like some guys that we have signed for huge contracts and then traded to NE for a fifth round pick in 2013 - not to name names...
This would be a good signing. But I can live with it if it doesn't happen.

He is an amazing shut down corner, but i am cautious about making big big splashes in free agency
Buford
July-28th-2011, 09:52 PM
getting Joseph would have been nice. But I think if they bring back Buchanan, The DB situation if healthy will be fine for 2011.
Use that cap and get a bunch of blue collar lunchpale type guys to modest deals. Depth on the OL, DL, LBs.

Nothing wrong with big splashes.
If Nnamdi was 26, I'd give much. But, at his age, I'd prefer to just stick with one of the next tier down OR even Cromartie as I've always liked him.[COLOR="Gold"]

If the Redskins aren't at least looking into signing him, they're crazy. We definitely have the cap room and a corner like Nnamdi only comes on the market once every couple decades. Say what you will about being afraid of big contracts but this is a new regime. Some of you think we're going to win by signing super cheap 25 year old Oline and Dline with "great character" (i sure as hell don't care about a guys character as long as we win football games) but sometimes you have to sign veteran players with experience who can still play at a high level. Cheap does not mean good. Cheap is depth, not starting material. Face it, we aren't going to sign a starting guard or tackle for 5 years 5 million 0 guaranteed, although i know some of you wouldn't mind (as long as he's under 30!!!!!). Think of this secondary....Nnamdi, Hall, Atogwe, Landry with Orakpo and Kerrigan rushing from the outside and Cofield and Bowen bringing the inside pressure.

Nothing good ever comes from trying to corner (no pun intended) the market on one position.
I hope the jets do get him.
They'll probably deteriorate quickly after doing so.

How would Nnamdi fit here if we have DeAngelo and we just signed Wilson? Are we giving up on Barnes and forcing Wilson to play nickle for $5,000,000 a year? Because DeAngelo isn't not being on the field for every damn play because he gets paid way too much. Why don't we just cut ties with Byron Westbrook, and pick up a cheap veteran CB or resign Phillip and have our 4 CB's set. No need to overpay for Nnamdi.
While he may be the best player to hit free agency in a very long time, it's just not what we need right now. I always preferred how the Redskins are acquiring players now.
We have:
1.Cut ties with 2 major issues within the organization
2. Drafted 10+ players.
3. Signed via free agency several possible starters and acquired depth instead of making the big splash contract.
This along with another solid off-season will make this team a playoff contender. We have guys who want to play, want to win, we have a very physical team. We're gonna have a solid run offense, with a play making turnover and physical style defense. This team not only has ammunition to make a playoff run more likely next year, but go deeper then we have before in recent years. It's not about making the playoffs every 3 years now, it's about making it, deserving it, earning it, and doing something with it. Depth allows you to do that. Not only is the a fact, but it was forced upon our last Superbowl winner as they were forced to dig through their depth chart to fill in roughly 9 positions.

I agree with most of your post, except for the "solid run offense" part. We have done a great job thus far building our defense this year (let's hope Haslett knows what to do with it), but at this point our offense is going to flat out SUCK. Our OL is still weak, our WR is mediocre, we have some decent tight ends, some unproven RB's, and our QB situation is a laughing stock this year. Of course, I do hope that I am wrong.

This would be an absolutely foolish idea. There is absolutely no reason to bring him here.
The Jets feel they're 1 player away from the Super Bowl, and have for the past 2 years
The 49ers and Texans sorely need help in the defensive back field...
Now On paper a starting 4 of Hall, Asomugha, Otagwe and Landry sounds like a dream list of DB's....because it is. This is not fantasy football. We tried that with Deion Sanders, Adam Archuleta, and Jeremiah Trotter. That didn't work out so well for us. Vinny Cerrato was fired because he was stupid. Accept it. NEXT

From a negotiation standpoint I can't imagine why now would be the time to pursue him. The guy is quiet, and I'm sure he makes sure that extends to his agent. Teams have no incentive to advertise their offers to him while he's still on the open market.
Just because we aren't hearing about it, does not mean his value has dropped or interest has waned.
edit: I assume (and this is as uneducated a guess as there is) that Nnamdi is deciding whether he can live with turning down major money to play in NY or possibly SF. Or even deciding where he would prefer to play. It might not be about the money at all. This guy is not your typical top tier CB.

i like Nade but i was thinking we should go aft Johnathna joeseph, very good and young cb. and we let him sign with the texans. hasavin joeseph signed with the bucs? we need another guard and a rt.lb help and a starter caliber cb. and by our slow movement on some of this we may either miss out completely or be forced to enter the nadi sweepstakes.we also still need a nose tackle, coefield is not i repeat is not a 3-4 nose tackle.
