An Army soldier who had been absent without leave since earlier this month was arrested this week near Fort Hood with a gun and suspicious materials in what local law enforcement officials described yesterday as a “terror plot’’ to kill other soldiers.
During questioning after his arrest, the soldier, Private First Class Naser Jason Abdo, admitted that he specifically planned to attack Fort Hood, Associated Press reported last night. An FBI spokesman said that he could not provide further details because it was a continuing investigation.

When he signed up for the military, Abdo said he had not thought that his religious beliefs would be an issue. "I was under the impression that I could serve both the U.S. Army and my God simultaneously," he said.
But as his deployment neared, he began to rethink things and eventually worked up the courage to approach his unit and tell them how he felt, he said.
"Islam is a much more peaceful and tolerant religion than it is an aggressive religion," he said. "I don't believe that Islam allows me to operate in any kind of warfare at all, including the U.S. military and any war it partakes in. I believe that our first duty as a Muslim is to serve God."

An AWOL Muslim American Army private arrested near Fort Hood has told investigators that he wanted to attack fellow soldiers at the military post, the police chief in Killeen, Texas, said Thursday.
"Military personnel were a target of this suspect," Chief Dennis Baldwin told reporters about Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, who is expected to face federal charges. Baldwin said Abdo, who was arrested Wednesday, had no accomplices, "as far as I know."

At least this one didn't go to Virginia Tech.
And he's a good Muslim. They found child porn on his computer. Whatever happened to Sharia law?

There are very "normal" jobs in the Army. There's no disputing what the Army's ultimate job is, but it is absolutely possible to serve, and have, essentially, an every day job.
I must also say that the Army does a phenomenal job of accomodating people of all faiths. I'm Lutheran, and they didn't have a specific Lutheran service at Ft. McClellan, where I attended basic training. After speaking with the chaplain, I was allowed to not only attend Catholic services, but to assist him as a lector/cantor, and assist with the distribution of communion. I've never felt so welcomed in a faith community as I did there. And obvoiusly, HUGE concessions were made to allow me to participate the way I did.
IMO, if someone is getting to this point with the Army because of faith issues, it's on them, not the Army.

Yeah, as ex-Army I'll second everything h_h said. Though there is some stray stuff here (http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/us-military-weapons-inscribed-secret-jesus-bible-codes/story?id=9575794) and there (http://harpers.org/archive/2009/05/0082488) (for example), I never witnessed anything like that and served with people of all faiths, no problems. They pressed hard mutli-faithism(?) all through. Hell we had military from Muslim countries, coming into Fort Hood and training (pilots on the Apache).
Navy Dave, I'm curious, what year was it that you met your first Mormon? The Black guy.

humorously paraphrasing..."My Islamic religion is peaceful and not aggressive. So I joined the Army! I was disappointed to find out I had to serve in warfare as a soldier in the Army. Who knew!?!? Now I'm sad. I went awol but instead of going forward with being a quitter, I'll get a gun and kill lots of people at Fort Hood. That'll show em!! B/c you know... my religion is peaceful and not aggressive..."
what a psychopath.
