-- The penalties, three fumbles and injuries concern Hue Jackson. The fact that the Raiders scored only 18 points despite completing 23 of 36 passes in Thursday night's preseason opener doesn't faze the first-year head coach in the slightest.

"The issues with scoring in the scoring zone ... We got better as the season went on a year ago so I think I know how to fix that very quickly," Jackson said. "I feel very comfortable with that one."

Especially considering how efficient all three of his quarterbacks were in the 24-18 loss to Arizona. Jason Campbell completed 6 of 9 for 66 yards, Kyle Boller was 7-for-8 for 42 yards and Trent Edwards completed 10 of 19 for 140 yards and a well-placed touchdown pass to David Ausberry.

"I was impressed with all of them," Jackson said. "Obviously Jason did a fabulous job of running the first team and getting the ball to different people. That's what we were trying to do ... is get everybody an opportunity to touch the ball.

"Kyle came in and he lit it up ... he was spectacular. That's what I expect from him. Obviously Trent, who hadn't been here very long, I was so impressed with him because here he is getting the information from me and trying to figure it out in his mind, and then going out and executing pretty flawlessly."

Jackson said all three showed poise and the ability to lead the team. He could see the big fight between Cal's Boller and Stanford's Edwards for the backup job going down to the wire.

"Both of those young men are very competitive and they want that opportunity," Jackson said. "It also makes it fun. Those guys go and every day they compete in the classroom and they compete on the field, and they're very good friends."

As far as the injuries, Jackson didn't shed much light Friday night on safety Hiram Eugene's dislocated hip or receiver Chaz Schilens' knee. He said there was no timetable on Eugene yet and with Schilens, "we're just further evaluating what's going on. I think later in the week we'll know."

Jackson liked what he saw out of the offensive line, singling out center Samson Satele, center/guard Stefen Wisniewski, guard/tackle Stephon Heyer and tackles Joe Barksdale and Jared Veldheer.

And he wasn't too concerned with the troubles that backup cornerbacks Walter McFadden and DeMarcus Van Dyke had against Arizona.

"I'm comfortable because they're young players," Jackson said. "They'll step up. They got to rise up and play, and I expect that they will."

It would be funny if Al Davis re-assembled the recent Skins roster (Campbell, Heyer, Rock, etc, etc) and actually won the division with them :ols:...

While they may (or may not) improve this year, I just don't think Emperor Palpatine can stay patient long enough for them to have any sustained amount of success.

The bad news for the Raiduhs is that the Chiefs and Chargers look like they could both be very good this year, which means that no matter how good their record is at the end of the season, they'll still most likely be on the outside looking in, which won't make The Emperor happy.

So long as the Raiders O line / running backs + defense can stay healthy they will win inspite of their qb.

Jason Campbell goes 6 for 9, in the first preseason game, and it's considered front page news ?

He's got nothing on the sex cannon.

I don't see Denver doing much this year, and I suspect that KC will regress from last year (this is a hunch moreso than anything - I haven't followed their offseason much, though Oakland beat them handily at the end of last year and they were beaten handily in the 1st round of the playoffs). I'd say SD is the favorite - they'll probably continue to have great yardage #s on both sides of the ball, though we'll see if that translates into wins: it didn't last year. We'll see how it turns out. Even if Oakland does win the division, they won't go anywhere in the playoffs unless JC finally starts being consistent.

I'm more optimistic about Grossman than I am about JC at this point.

PS: Regarding JC's stat line from that game, I think it should be noted that a deep pass attempt of his resulted in defensive PI, setting up a FG.
