View Full Version : Redskins.com Locker Room video 10/2 (Sam Huff REALLY losing it)

Did anyone watch the post game Locker Room video on Redskins.com?

Looks like Sam Huff is doing worse than I thought. Around 6:45 through the clip, he asks Stephen Bowen where he came from, noticing he wasn't picked up in the draft. Larry awkwardly corrects him and they move on... but really left me pretty shocked. I mean we all knew he's losing it, but did anyone realize it was this bad? Probably gonna have to replace him real soon unfortunately...

On another note, the players seem pretty confident (but not too confident) heading into the bye week. We still got the reality check in Dallas to keep the players motivated. Torain excited to jump in and contribute. I hope they all get at least a few touches every game. Could be a similar rotation to preseason, that worked well. Rak always great with reporters.

This thread is mainly intended to discuss Sam Huff, though.

EDIT: they removed the link.... it shows the organization definitely knows it's a problem.

LOL @ the look on Bowen's face. Sam Huff was losing his marbles the last time I listened to radio coverage about 10 years ago, I can see why people want somebody new.

After not listening at all last season, I decided to give the radio another go this season. They are still awful.

Sam Huff is an embarrassment. He is clueless about just about everything. I will say that I credit Michael and Jurgensen for not letting his mistakes stand most of the time. The correct him on air alot.

The radio seems to miss the ref announcing a penalty alot now and this led to Larry Michael sounding like a moron when the ref called a penalty on one of the punt returns and he clearly said "enforced from the end of the play" (which was the hit that forced the fumble and the ball bounced backwards before bring recovered by the Rams at like the 5). The ball was placed at the 20 or so and Michael said they must have picked up the flag. No Larry if you were paying attention 5 plus 15 is 20.

The radio booth is as bad as ever. My wife, who is learning the game, keeps saying "these old men are driving me crazy".

I will say this though, after taking a year off, as bad as this booth is and all three should be long gone, I do find listening to their call the lesser of two evils. I just can't stand the tv booths for Skins games. Especially the C grade stuff like Myers and Ryan.

I love Sam Huff, but this is just sad.. The Skins front office needs to find a nice way to tell Sam thank you, but get him off the air. It's difficult to listen to at times.

Actually I like Larry and Sonny. Sam to me, nice guy, represents nostalgia, but its not only these mistakes that are striking me, listening to him it sounds like he just shows up on game day without doing any preparation during the week. In other words, it seems like he just wings it and it shows.

OP....Link?

Last year Sam Huff was calling Albert Connell's name. I pretty much knew what I needed to know after that.

Sam: "That was Albert Connell"

Sonny: "Albert Connell hasn't played for this team in 10 years."

Before the game they asked Sam what he thought of Landry last week.

He asked if they meant Tom Landry.

Please, get Sam off the air. It's gone beyond funny into embarrassing/cruel territory.

It's sad. That's pretty much it. It's clear that dementia is well on it's way and I can't understand why they continue to let it happen. If Snyder wanted to do something classy, he'd let Sam come in and watch the games in his suite with him.

I hope they get someone younger to come in and do the games after Sam is gone. It would be nice to have someone in there who's played in the last 20 years or so. No exaggeration, I just think it would be nice to have someone like Rypien or Gary Clark or someone from the Skins most recent glory days.

I think everyone is being a little to tight about Sam. I listened to the radio on the ride home, and really enjoyed it. Sam's going completely bonkers, Sonny is like his stable, and intelligent wife, and Larry's like the obvious-stating son (yes, I know that's his job, it's not a knock on him.)

It's almost like a sitcom with my football.

I stopped listening once they replaced Frank with Larry. Being a Dish subscriber makes it almost impossible as the radio is delayed by 30 seconds at least. I did listen a little yesterday and I agree Sam is in a sad state of affairs. He needs to retire. Period.

Did anyone notice when Ryan/Myers insisted that Rex had grounded the ball, when the line of scrimmage was at the 34. They actually watched a slow motion replay of it, when the ball clearly made it to the 29, but still said "yep, didn't make it to the line of scrimmage, refs missed that one." I wanted to barf.

I remember I listened to the first preseason game on the radio, Sam said it was first time he'd seen Rex Grossman play.

They really need to gracefully remove him from the booth, he clearly lacks the mental capacity to do the job.

It is very obvious Sam needs to retire.

The gaffes and "senior moments" are now 1/2 the things he says. The other half he just sounds like an upset old man

I think it was the 1st preseason game. Steelers get a 4 yard gain.

"They look like they haven't practiced all week!"

Larry: "Its the first play of the preseason Sam"

And when Sheehan asked Sam about Landry and he went off on a 30 second tangent about Tom Landry

"Tom Landry? You know, he was my first coach and I learned everything about football from him."

it is sad ... people should be a little more respectful with their commetns and not make light of his situation. you are gonna be there, i'm gonna be there, and your parents are going to be there.

this goes to show the INCOMPETENCY OF SNYDER and those around him. no idea how to handle this situation ... they let go of people they should keep (brad johnson, peirce, ryan clark) and keep the people they should let go, i.e. sam.

I mean, our front office is doing better, but a situation like with Sam goes to show they still are not a well oiled running machine.

Yesterday was the first time I've listened to a radio broadcast in a few years, I was putting together furniture in a room with an old television that gets picture but no sound, so I fired up the Internet radio broadcast. Nevermind the fact that they were a solid minute+ behind the TV feed, calling plays that happened 2-3 plays ago. It was the first time I had heard Sam in awhile, and I was shocked. I think what did it for me was when he went bonkers that they were playing Chris Cooley at linebacker.

Sonny: You mean fullback Sam.

Even my wife, who doesn't like football and barely understands the sport, wondered why he was making so many mistakes. When even she knows he got something wrong, there's something really wrong.

Since I do a lot of public speaking I'm about as patient as anybody with people making honest mistakes and "miss-speaks," but I have to agree that Sam, and really the whole radio broadcast is getting to be an embarassment. I would personally like to see a whole new line up in the booth. Does Snyder not see that this reflects very poorly on the whole organization??

yeah it's a sensitive situation. Who knows maybe this is Sam's only decent source of revenue and Sam needs this job to keep him afloat... Maybe Snyder can transition Sam into a new job that is more on the behind the scenes... who knows...

There has to be some good reasoning on why the Redskins have not cut him loose so I would not be so harsh on Snyder or the Redskins for keeping Sam around.

I don't think any of us really know what goes on behind the scenes, so it's hard for me to comment. We all know that Sam's on shaky ground and honestly these threads involving Sam's mental state pop up on a weekly basis it seems and i'm not sure if a point exists to even go out of your way to complain about it anymore. The Snyder bashing in this thread has me scratching my head too. Jesus, it's like the man just admitted he was the Anti-Christ or something in that nature, enough is enough already damn.

Sam asked the same question about Bowen during the game broadcast and they just ignored it and moved on. At some point Sam tried to make some point about the game and Larry goes....do you mean the Skins or the Rams? They had no idea what he was talking about. But it's beating a dead horse, Sam has needed to move on for at least 2-3 years now. I don't think Snyder wants to be seen as the one to do it since they got backlash for letting Herzog go and bringing in Michael.

Yesterday Sam said something along the lines of, "St. Louis should move back to Los Angeles. They never should have come." To which Larry responded, "They won a Super Bowl in St. Louis." Then, "They did?"

SonnyandSam
October-3rd-2011, 11:50 AM
Sam's mental deterioation has been going on for several years now. Snyder and the front office have known about it and wanted Sonny and Sam leave on their own terms because of their history with the franchise. Snyder certainly does not want to be the one to force either or both to go after the Herzog reaction by fans. If Sam goes, Sonny will be going, too. It's always been a package deal. Sonny and Larry have tried to hide the worst gaffes but have always tried to correct mistakes by Sam. Sonny has even tried to use humor to minimize the gaffes because of their solid friendship.

I doubt they would remove Sam during the year; but there may be more pressure to encourage him to retire. The announcement this past year that the three would be back seemed to take longer this year than past years....but maybe that was caused by the lockout.

I understand some fans being upset with the quality of Sam's contribution. But let's have some compassion. Sam is a big part of Redskins history both on the field and off. And folks, remember....that could be your grandfather or grandmother some day that begins to forget your name or memories of your life. Have some compassion.

Last year he referred to Devin Thomas as a tight end. This wouldn't have been quite as bad except Thomas had just returned a kick-off about 3 plays earlier (it was preseason).

It's sad, but I think they have to figure out a way to keep Huff financially sound while changing the radio team. Honestly, it would have been easier for me to stomach if Frank, Sonny, and Sam all left at the same time. That's the broadcast team I'll always remember.

That was akward at least Larry Michael quicky changed the subject. I think it's about time to ease him out the booth. I don't listen to the games on the radio but how is he doing on the radio call? I don't listen to the broadcasts much either because I make sure I'm able to watch the game ALWAYS. I used to have to listen a couple years ago, apparently it's gotten worse since then. He's just way out of touch. He doesn't even really know much about the current team.
