View Full Version : Redskins have faced 6 Rookie QBs since 2006...... Their record????

0-6.

Wow. Chick Hernandez mentioned this at the end of Comcast's Post Game Show. Guess Vegas is aware of this statistic as the Skins open as a 3 point dog to the 1-5 Panthers.

Here's hoping the streak ends at 6 on Sunday.

That feels about right. Every time I think our aggressive D is going to be licking their chops and going after a rookie QB, and then we let a Vince Young sit back and pick us apart.

I was watching the post game show and my mouth dropped open when that stat was given. Trevor Matich had a look of disbelief as well. Sure hope that changes this Sunday.

Everyone said the same thing about the Eagles and they were held to 20. The Panthers are no Eagles. Cam Newton has been an interception machine this season. (let's hope Rex stays benched and we'll be fine)

I mentioned this in another thread before the season started when looking at the schedule. This is a huge game for us. Losing puts us right back into contention for bottom-dwellers and everyone will start feeling like this is the same old ordeal without a serviceable quarterback. Winning keeps us in contention for the playoffs and everyone focused on the next game against the Bills.

I realize that if we were to lose our next game it doesn't disqualify us from anything because there is still a long way to go. But looking at our schedule and knowing we still have some big holes on our roster (losing Lich for the season and Cooley/Trent for a good amount of time doesn't help) I just don't see any group of weeks where we'll be ripping off 3-4 game winning streaks. It's going to be a battle almost every game and we're going to have to win games in groups of 2 at the most at a time so we cannot afford to be sitting around .500 or below because that will pretty much be the end of it for this team.

Gradkowski while he was on the Bucs...and Fitz was the QB on the Bills when Gibbs called those back-to-back timeouts, I believe.

He was drafted in 2005, so that one is out.

We did beat Kellen Clemens, but I guess that was year two for him.

I'm not surprised. The Redskins are so scheme oriented they suck against any kind of improvisation, such as the kind a rookie still learning a playbook or trying to keep down panic might engage in.

Newton Is big, strong, mobile and has no fear from most of the highlights Ive seen of him of late. His teammates love him. would probably take a bullet for him.

Cant blame Vegas. 3 point disadvantage against a damn 1-5 team is insulting but what can you do but prove it wrong? I don't think our Skins can do it tho. Panthers hate us in general and need this win badly. And as usual Skins will more then likely play down to a team like this.

not suprised. when rookie or backups come into the game, our defense in the past has fallen apart. they dont seem to be able to cope without something new or outside of the scheme or what they had gameplanned for.

however, i do think that this year's defense is different. its legit and im not worried about it. hopefully our offense will be able to give us enough points to win.

The Panthers put up a lot of points, I'm not sure if our offense can match that.

Don't let the total yardage and individual prolificness of Cam Newton fool you, the Panthers sit in the bottom half of the league in points scored.

RandyHolt
October-17th-2011, 11:21 PM
i have seen our passive D's of the past sit back on rookie QB's, you have seen it too. But we did it with all the other QBs too, so its hard to remember.

The most annoying in recent memory was when Kurt Warner had an elbow cast and we didnt get after him all game. We were lucky to win that on what was our only sack of the game.

I think we can finally say we have an aggressive play caller on D. I have heard that everytime a DC is brought in, but I think this time it is true.

Yea, Im not afraid of the Panthers offense as much as I am our own..

This is true. The Panthers have also given up a ton of yards, I believe.

The 'Skins can't win a shoot out. Not with Beck, not with Grossman.

But they MIGHT be able to clobber a few turnovers out of Carolina. And if Gross-Beck can manage to hang onto the ball, they might just be able to get a win.

4-2 is MUCH better than 3-3. 4-2 going to Canada to face a Buffalo team that has a good offense, and a questionable defense. Could be a good matchup against the 'Skins who have a good defense, and a putrid offense.

The Redskins need to hit Cam Newton and hit him hard. 0-6 is a terrible statistic, but I doubt if Newton has the ability to elude this defense the whole day. He's going to get flustered. He's going to make mistakes and throw pics to Atogwe, Hall, and Josh Wilson will pick him off all day, and most importantly, He's going to get hit by Orakpo and Kerrigan.

October-18th-2011, 04:53 AM
It's a sad stat but in reality none of those games did the rookie QB beat us. He just didn't make killer rookie mistakes and his team beat us.

On the flip side the Skins did pound rookie Alex Smith in 2005 and rookie Eli Manning in 2004. But neither was putting up the numbers of Newton so who knows.

Oh abso-friggin-lutely we'll play down to them. All we look at is a teams record and prepare like we're playing a high school team. If we were playing the Packers and their 5-0 record we'd be better prepared and play our best. But 1-5 or worse teams will haunt us. Always have and always will.

Meh. I call it a coincidence. There's no magical curse that makes us lose vs rookies. Every year, a few teams start a rookie, some end up on our schedule, and we've lost most of our games since 2006 anyway, so there ya go. What's the record vs second-year players? Right, who cares? Players need to get this stat out of their head immediately. It doesn't matter. Just beat the Panthers.

I think we're going to lose on Sunday. I hope not, but I don't see it. We're in shambles defensively, and Foles had some good moments yesterday, without a week of starter reps in practice. We have no pass rush. Our secondary is terrible. Unless our offense can get it together, we are going to lose, and that streak will get longer.

I think this will be a good game to break the streak. The Eagles are in shambles and are falling faster than we are (which is pretty bad) also we are coming off a bye and should be healthier this week than previous. Nick Foles might be a long term answer but their offense doesnt work on the dink and dunk stuff that our defense allows. Our defense has been doing better at containing defenses and I think that continues this week when we play a team that has essentially given up.

1) Week 6 of the 2006 season - 1st round draft pick Vince Young came into FedEx Field and won 25-22 with the aide of some gaffes by the Redskins.

2) Week 11 of the 2006 season - 6th round draft pick Bruce Gradkowski spoiled Jason Campbell's debut as a starter with a 20-17 win at Raymond James Stadium.

3) Week 13 of the 2007 season - The Sean Taylor game - Rookie 3rd round pick Trent Edwards and his Buffalo Bills kicked the Redskins and their fans in the heart with a 17-16 win at FedEx Field, in the cold rain, minus #21...

4) Week 14 of the 2008 season - first round pick Joe Flacco contributed to the Redskins slide at the end of the 2008 season by beating the Redskins at M&T Bank Stadium 24-10. This game wasn't even as close as the score indicates...

5) Week 3 of the 2009 season - number 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford ended a 19 game losing streak by the Lions by defeating the Redskins 19-14. This was the game that affectively ended the Vinny Cerrato era in Washington, DC.

6) Week 3 of the 2010 season - number 1 overall pick Sam Bradford gives the home St Louis Crowd their first win of the 2010 season and the first win of his career in a 30-16 win... it was as much fun then as it sounds now....

7) Week 7 of the 2011 season - number 1 overall pick Cameron Newton led the Panthers over the Redskins at Bank of America Stadium 33-20. The ballad of John Beck was born in this game... and it would become a hit single the next week in Toronto vs the Bills.

8) Week 16 of the 2011 season - first round pick Christian Ponder led the Vikings to victory - well, sort of, he was hurt in this game, and Joe Webb came in and cleaned up the Redskins... but the loss still goes to the Redskins. Christmas eve at FedEx and the Skins got a 33-26 lump of coal. Thank goodness I had a DD for this game....

I think it's because hasbeen always plays rookies like they're John Elway or Joe Montana, rush few and drop the rest into coverage (with predictable results)

Why he doesn't get a clue from the other 31 coordinators out there who would blitz a rookie to hell is beyond me.. it seems like he makes his plan and sticks to it, results be damned.

Did the home losing streak end at 9 games? I think it did, but it may have been 8.

Another weird stat that I believe Chic Hernandez put out: We have lost something like 9 straight home games when facing teams that have a five game losing streak or more. So there are two factors working against us.

IMO, the streak continues to 0-7 this Sunday unless they develop a pass rush and have a secondary that can cover which they don't. This is a typical game that the Skins ALWAYS lose. A desperate team coming in on dire straights facing the Skins. Guys like Sam Bradford and Vince Young, and most recently last year with Cam Newton all came in and somehow figured out how to beat the Skins. This Sunday should be no different. It's depressing, but has become the norm when it comes to the Skins. I hope I'm wrong, but I probably won't be.
