DEANGELO HALL NAMED NFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ASHBURN, Va. – The National Football League announced today that Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a Week 12 win over Seattle.

Against the Seahawks, Hall had a career-high seven passes defensed, seven tackles and a game-clinching interception late in the fourth quarter of the Redskins’ 23-17 victory. The Redskins’ defense held Seattle to 126 yards passing and a 46.7 completion percentage (14-of-30 passing), the lowest of any NFL team in Week 12.

This marks the second time that Hall has won NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. He previously won the award after a four-interception performance against the Chicago Bears in Week 7 of the 2010 season. The feat tied an NFL and Redskins record. Hall became the 19th NFL player and third Redskin to record four interceptions in the same game. He became the first NFL player to record all four interceptions in the second half, including returning one 92 yards for a touchdown.

Redskins players have won 80 Player of the Week awards, including 33 NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, since the NFL started awarding weekly honors in 1984. Before Hall’s selection this week, linebacker Brian Orakpo was the most recent honoree, as he was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week following the Redskins’ Week 4 win at St. Louis earlier this season.

From goat to Conference player of the week, huh? Look, I don't expect him to be able to shut down likes of Dez Bryant one on one every time, because no one does. I hope DHall retires a Redskin. He can still handle his own against most WRs in this league, not everyone can do that, and believe it or not he just turned 28 a couple days ago...

This is the epitomy of the Redskins season. From dog of the week to defensive player of the week. Absolutely no consistency from week to week. Good thing we didn't cut him after the Dallas game. :silly:

I have been critical of Hall's performance this season for good reason. He hasn't played at a high level for most of the year. I think one of the biggest reasons is not have a corner on the other side who is great in coverage. If Rogers were still here I believe Hall would have had a better season. The Skins must draft a corner next season. Wilson is decent but not exactly someone you fear throwing at.

Pretty much the life of all but a handful of DBs whoever played. Its rare that a DB who plays for a team that wins/loses so many close games isn't scrutinized.

He's the player that you love to hate. He's the Rex of the defense. You'll either get good Hall or Bad Hall. He's what we got and a keeper imo.

Last year the week before he won it, he got chewed out by Haslett. This year he said he should be cut the week before he won it. Apparently if you put Hall's back against the wall he destroys offenses.

how is this award determined? is it voting by players/coaches/media? i wonder if his comments last week saying he would cut himself (and the ensuing tweets from ray lewis, roethlisburger, etc) factored into it.

Seven passes defensed is an incredible number. Leading the league are Brandon Flowers with 17 and Jabari Greer/Joe Hayden have 16 -- for the season (11 games). Granted, you have to be thrown at to defend passes, but he clearly played well on Sunday. But I don't know how the award is determined. Surely not the players, they wouldn't vote each week. I'd guess the press.

Hall is a good player. He's exactly what he's always been. Feisty, playmaking corner. He is not a cover corner/shutdown corner. INTs come in bunches. I say he gets one against Sanchez this weekend. Heard it here.

Josh Wilson has been playing better as the season goes on. I'm expecting him to be above average at worst next season and probably a surprise.

You deserve it, Hall. You get a pass from me even when you play poorly, because its obvious you care like a fan. Bouncing back like this after being critical of himself last week proves that, especially in a lost season like this one. We need MORE players like Hall, as much as people hate his personality. He gives a ****, which is rare in today's NFL.

I need a triple facepalm for this post. When our players do well, we have no problem calling it a fluke, but when they do poorly, they don't get the benefit of the doubt. Hell, we could have Revis, Rogers (because everyone now loves him since he's not a Skin ), Sean Taylor, and Ed Reed as our secondary and we would have some "fans" calling for their heads if they have a bad week.

if you think dhall just has a bad week problem then you're watching a different football team. like i said in the other thread:

dhall is a playmaker who hasn't made plays this year and that makes him just a bad corner.

when josh wilson goes out and westbrook comes in other teams still went at hall, that's not a coincidence.

i'm not a rogers fan, but i would have taken him here instead of dhall every day and twice on sundays. i prefer players to shut up and play as opposed to talk, get burnt, and then blame everyone else or throw a pitty party.

i don't know where to find secondary stats, but i am more than willing to assume that josh wilson has outperformed dhall this season.

Hall is a below average no1 corner, but would be a fantastic no2 corner - he's not good when he's relied upon, but when he has solid backing his ability to make plays is excellent, in many ways, he's a kind of greg williams type player - good with turnovers, but not 100% reliable to cover

Hall deserved it, he played lights out Sunday. For the rest of the haters on this board who love to see the Redskins lose every week, and who love to see players screw up so they can quick log into a messageboard and say "I told you so", you should just become Eagles fans now. Our fan base is turning into pathetic fans like the Eagles. Hopefully we retain DHall until he retires. Guy has so much passion for the game and I love how he is critical of himself in the media. He will be a solid #2 for us in the future and I'm willing to bet he will restructure in the offseason.

He hasn't been flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty this season, according to the Penalties by Player thread. Seems if Hall was trying to start something every game, as you claim DieselPwr44, then he would likely have accrued a bunch of those penalties.

http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?359284-Penalty-Count-by-Player&highlight=penalty+player

Hall does have 1 unnecessary roughness call, but only 1 other penalty (unnamed in the thread) all season. Seems to me that a player who tires to start something every game would have more than 2 penalties on the season by now.

It still doesn't change the fact that we need better CBs. Preferably guys like Cromartie, Revis, Nnamdi, KirkPatrick, & Claiborne.

Just out of curiosity, did any of the coaches say anything after Hall's comment's about "deserving to be cut" last week?

After their performance this season, I agree, but they are still better than anything we have. They were part of a defense that went to the AFC Championship game two years in a row for crying out loud.

We need good cover corners that have the ability to shutdown the opposing receivers on a consistent basis. The likes of Josh Wilson, MeAngelo, Barnes just won't do it for us. We need to take it to the next level.

Not necessarily.

There are countless times during these games we've seen Hall get into someone's face after the play was over for no reason.

Heck, even read some fans' account of him trying to get into it with a ref before the game even starts. Why in the hell you'd want to do that as a player is beyond me.

Hall won a weekly award. Hooray.

For once, he backed up his big mouth. Wish he could do that on a more consistent basis.

I wonder if the response to his saying he should be cut was a wake-up call. Overall, he's had a pretty poor season. He is a better player than the guy who's been on the field most of the year. His guy has been open, wide open, way too often.

:kickcan: I won't ever understand some Skins fans... People saying - slow NFL week, get his trade value up, just above average day, not stellar... etc..

Guy has 7 PD's, 1 INT, 4-5 tackles, solid coverage all day... Oh, and by the way, he is 2nd on this team in tackles, and tied for 1st in INT's... So I'd say he has been very busy this year, and holding his own. He is also the best all around corner we have.

this forum, more than any other life lesson, place I've been, people I've met, and so on; has truly taught me that no matter what, you can't make everyone happy.

I think people see what they want to. If Hall was constantly doing what you claim then his penalties would be higher. It's much easier to go off of that than to believe someone going solely off perception, using heavily biased language.

Hall has been consistent this season. Sure, we can fall back on the Dallas game about those 2 plays, but then again, you can't put all the fault on him during those plays. Remember, even Darrell Green even got burnt time to time. Hall may be more outspoken than others, he's more passionate about the redskins when compared to others on our team. We need more players like him.

This is classic D-Hall. Not the best in coverage but he is one hell of a playmaker. True ball hawk but can be shaky in coverage. Thats always how he has been and will always be that way. I like him a lot. When D-Hall has a big game he explodes. He is going to give up some big plays but you live with it because of his playmaking ability. Rock on D-Hall.
