Thanks to HapHazard for posting the stories on this guy.
He actually studied JPP all week and schemed on him....
This is the kind of lineman we need in our rotation.

agreed, he got beat the one time for the sack, but it looked more like a communication/rookie error since he didnt even try to block JPP. but other than that he had a good game

Eh, he's given us a few competent games. Even if he never played another down for us, we still got more out of a UDFA than I ever thought we would. I call this one a win.

Lets try him out at RT next season IMO

And no false starts, which automatically makes him an upgrade over Heyer as our backup swing tackle.
Smith seems to be a conscientious hard worker, I'm happy to keep hm around as a backup moving forward.

He got beat more than once guys. JPP was in the backfield several times, making plays and hurrying the QB
Name a T on any team where JPP hasn't got pressure on? I think W. Smith faired pretty well against him yesterday.

Yep...if nothing else we have a RT candidate going into 2012 or rotational depth for the OL. At most, we have a potential starter.

JPP only had three pressures all day according to the postgame show. One of those was the sick which was just miscommunication or bad play design(shouldn't have a WR on JPP either way). I don't recall any holding penalties on Smith either, and at least once JPP got pressure when he moved to rushing up the middle, so really Smith may have been beat straight up head to head once. That's pretty damn good for an UDFA rookie going up against a guy with 12 sacks who abused our top 5 pick LT earlier this year.

Willie Smith looked good with one on one battles I thought. Obviously, I think stunts were a little confusing for everyone. I still think he faired well. These next two games will get to see more :)

but let's not put this guy any Heyer on the pedestal then we have to ...

I am hoping for a few o-lineman drafted and it will be nice to see some competition between rookies, current starters and some current backups who have played well (including smith).
Depth at OL has been an issue since the 90's and it would be nice to strengthen that area as we bring in a new QB.

Another example of how hard work and character are some times worth more on game day than talent and a high draft pick. Need more Willie Smiths.

Agreed JPP is a beast and one of the best ALL-AROUND 4-3 DE out there. I think if Willie Smith works on his overall strength this off-season he could be a viable option at RT. Currently, due to his athleticism and lack of strength, he is strictly a LT. Again with a full off-season working out with the strength staff I think he can make a pretty good RT.

8. Please use descriptive and accurate topic titles for your thread. < edit part of rule>
We are having a preponderance of threads being started, particularly in the Stadium forum, where a title of 2 to 3 non-descriptive words is used. <edit>
.... if your thread title is simply "Santana Moss" or any other person's name and nothing else, you may find yourself in the No New Threads group. In all our forums, we expect accurate and clear descriptions of your topic in your title.
To avoid the NNT, the OP needs to read the entire rule and edit his title appropriately.

Agreed - going into the season I thought "Wow our OLine depth is TERRIBLE" -- now that we have had all these injuries, these young guys are showing they can play some ball AND are getting valuable experience. Another TOUGH test these last 2 weeks - Jared Allen and crew and then Cole and Co.... Hope they fair well the rest of the year!

Me doubts that Trent Williams would have done this...Maybe between hits on his TOKE or BONG, huh?

Rewound that play a couple times and it looked to me like that was supposed to be a quick pass to Niles Paul but the FB missed the block on JPP.

Happy with Smith, Polumbo, and Hurt's play the last couple of weeks. The Skins have developed young o-line depth. Add that to T. Williams, Lichtensteiger and Monty, and the Skins are well on their way to having a young, good and deep OL corps. They have done the same thing with the RBs.
This offseason (obviously) is gonna be all about QB, WRs and DBs.

There will still be some OL needs addressed... I believe we do have some depth in our backup rotation, but I am not so sure about starting...

If this is the case, I would like to see them try him at LT next year if he finish the year strong.
Then move Trent to RT, yea he would be a expensive RT. But that's where he played in College.

Hey if the kid gets stronger and continues to work hard I believe he can play. He may not be an all pro but he has been very productive since he has been pressed into service.

I watched him quite a bit in college and unless something changed he's more suited to the left.
He's a very good athlete but he's not that physical...which RTs tend to be.
Heck, I think Trent's a better RT than Willie. :2cents:

We should remember that other teams don't have much film to study on Smith yet. So let's see how he does over time. I'm sure we all remember Heyer looking pretty decent his first couple times out there.
But having said that, it was a good start for Smith. And you gotta respect the work ethic.

The number of sacks is one statistic of many to evaluate the offensive line as a whole. Beware of using that one stat to say you've found the new OL of the Redskins future.
I think before it's decided that these guys are now a talented offensive line, you might want to consider who it is they're playing against. One or two games is too small a sample to evaluate an OL, especially against the 32nd and 30th ranked defenses in the league, respectively. Just saying.

He gave up plays but like many others have said, who hasn't! Sorry, but JPP is an absolute stud. People here were upset when Trent struggled against him and it makes me wonder if people are actually watching games other than our own. Look at the Ravens vaunted o-line. They gave up 4 sacks to Antwaan Barnes yesterday!! Givign up sacks is part of today's NFL. We're not going to see another '91 type season where we give up a handful of sacks.
On Willie Smith, JPP's sack wasn't even against him! There was obviously a miscommunication between him & Niles Paul, or maybe even the play called for a quick throw. JPP did make plays in the run game, but overall Willie did a great job. Its funny how he's being stereo-typed for being an undrafted guy. His performance would have been impressive for ANY rookie, and Willie should be graded as such.

Let's see how he does against Jared Allen and Trent Cole, as others have pointed out. I'm definitely curious about whether he can slide over and take the RT spot from Brown, since the latter seems not to be able to stay healthy.

I don't think we want to slide Willie over to RT and see how he does.
I just think we need to evaluate a UDFA right now as a back up LT.
It would be quite an accomplishment for an UDFA to do this well and be a back up LT. He could be quality depth for us at that position and would be a big win for us to have him at this point.
I think many of you are asking to much of him to move to a different position and be a starter. If he's a quality back up at LT.. we win.

I don't think many fans realize this. They think that if player x can't become a starter they were a failure. Backup LT is a very valuable position. Filling it with an UDFA would be a major coup.

There is NOTHING wrong with an UDFA becoming a high quality backup swing tackle. That being said, it sounds like some of you guys are content labeling him as only a quality backup because he's an UDFA. Let him compete for RT during the offseason and if he's the best for the job, then so be it....

A BIG HAIL YEAH to our line these past few games! Smith played a good game yesterday but the O line as a whole has played well. Hope this carrys into next year! I hope we get a few more "fat boys" this offseason along with the playmakers we need.

True...avoiding sacks is not the be-all and end-all of a LT's responsibilities. Smith has a bit of work to do with his all-around game before he should be considered full-time starter material, but for an UDFA going up against one of the best pass rushers in the league he did better than expected in pass protection.

No freakin' way. Trent is one of the best promising young LTs in the league. He didn't give up a single sack since week 1 against JPP of all people. The short memory of this fanbase is amazing, we're ready to replace Trent with a UDFA after one good game.

It definitely gives us less to worry about in terms of depth, I think starting RT is still a HUGE need for us IMO, however with a healthy Trent and Licht I think Shanny deserves credit for rebuilding this line from a joke in 2009 to a good and decent unit

I don't have any problems with competition I just don't want to expect too much out of a developing player.

Willie Smith played well in yesterday's game against Big Blue. He actually played much better against Jason Pierre-Paul in this game than Trent Williams did in the first game. You couldn't ask for a better performance from a reserve player playing the LT position.
