View Full Version : Sooo.......which player gets to wear the #10 jersey?
OBX4SKINS

Sooo....Gaffney now wears the #10 jersey, which is RG3's number also, so who get the number? I believe it is customary for a player to offer some sort of compensation to another player if you take his number, so if you were RG3, what would you give Gaffney for the #10? I heard on Mike & Mike this week players have given vacations, cars, college educations for their kids, etc. to other players for their number. Hmmm.

March-11th-2012, 10:10 AM
Hmmm...Gaffney is a serviceable wideout but Hankerson should be back and Moss in the slot and a true #1 coming to town likely via FA. Perhaps RGIII should just let Gaffney know I can make you look better than you really are, as in I can look your way or not look your way.
I'm sure they can work something out. Ownership and marketing will make sure RGIII gets the #10.

Gaffney wants to make the team right?
Burgold
March-11th-2012, 10:16 AM
It's Gaffney's right now. Griffin, if we get him, is a rookie. The team and its vets should not cater and bow to him. We don't need swelled heads. Now, if Griff wants to buy the rights to that number that's fine, but it's Gaffney's to give or sell.
Added to that. Griffin needs to carry towels, be made to sing, and taped to a flagpost at some point during minicamp.

RG3 seems like a guy who doesn't care about the number, I could see him just moving over another number unless it really meant a lot to him sentimentally, of course I don't know him personally so this is just based on assumptions about his personality. I agree with RFK Lives, the ownership and marketing will want him to grab number 10 if he so wants, so it's all up to what he wants, it might be a gesture of good faith to move over for an existing and veteran player.

Yeah, Griffin doesn't strike me as the type of guy that will come in and ask a vet to change his number. I'd say, since the NFL won't let him put Griffin III on the back of his jersey, Griffin and the # 3 would be awesome.
Which means Jonathan Crompton is going to have to give that #3 up.

I agree Burg. And Griffin also strikes me as the type to not even care about his # enough to offer the money for it, he seems too humble for that. I have nothing to base it on, but I have this gut feeling he's going to wear #11 and Aldrick may not be back.

I've never really understood why athletes put so much importance in a number, like "I had this number in college, I must have it in the pros" and "I had this number with my old team, I must have it for my new team." It's a number, not a name change lol. I don't know if it's superstition or what.

That is definitely an attitude I don't want the leader of my team having. I don't think that is going to be an issue though.
As far as the thread it's Gaffney's number. He's been wearing it since Florida and he's a vet and currently our most productive reciever. I don't think he is going to want to give it up and I don't think Griffin will care enough to make a stink over it.

A lot of it is tradition and superstition. Kobe switched from 8 to 24 because 24 is 1 more than 23 (Jordan). I don't have a link for that, but I remember hearing it or reading it some time ago. Lebron is 6 in Miami because 2x3=6.
My thing was I always had to have a 2 in the ones column for my number. I wore 82 as a receiver in high school and college, 12 in baseball in high school, and 22 in lacrosse in college. No real reason, but I seemed to play better wearing a 2 (in my mind anyway).

Ideally, Gaffney would offer his number up for sale....for a fairly high price (respect and all that). Even more ideal would be for Griffin to turn him down, telling Gaffney he's earned the right to keep the number, and to pick a different number, such as the 3 which would be an EXCELLENT marketing move. Redskins fan base would eat it up, as would NFL fans in general.

What I understood is that there are no more first initials, but I'm not sure about Jr., III, etc. Probably not allowed.
As for 0 and 00, definitely not allowed. A few years ago there was a C looking to get 00 (Jim Otto tribute I think) and it was not allowed.
As for the number, if 10 remains in use by Gaffney, using my own athlete number logic, I'd combine the existing numerals and get 1. JC chose 8 when he went to the Raiders, and I think this is a common practice, so my thought is RGIII's preference would be 10 then 1.
We'll see.

Me too! I played C and have a last name that has two ohs (@o@@o@) so always wanted 00. I had a custom jersey (Champion outlet stores used to make custom ones cheap) with my name and 00, but never actually got it in organized football mainly because it's not considered part of the standard number set.
