I saw the movie Sinister over the weekend and noticed something very unusual. Throughout the movie, the main character uses about 5-6 different features on his iPhone and Apple computer. It's not too distracting from the plot, but it's certainly very noticeable...they even show him navigating to software, etc. I'm aware of product placement and am sure this happens on some TV shows, but this is the first time I noticed it in such an egregious way in a movie.

I'm not sure I like if this is the direction that marketing is moving. I understand that companies need to be as creative as possible, but when I'm watching a thriller, I don't really need to see an online training course for how to launch specific apps.

By the way, the movie was very intense and pretty disturbing. If you like thrillers/horrors, it's a good one to watch, especially this time of year!

I was very disappointed personally...

I actually enjoyed the movie for the most part. There were some parts that I didn't love, but overall I thought it was pretty effective. What didn't you like about it?

I don't like movies where kids are the killers. It had potential, but it didn't do it for me.

I've grown to "enjoy the ride" with thrillers lately just because I think the ways they ultimately conclude them suck. So, if a movie has a scary tone or great atmosphere that keeps me spooked, I worry less about the ending or explanations. In reality, scary movies are pretty unrealistic so I'm sure they are tough to write.

I updated my title so that people realize they could get spoiled...the point of my thread really wasn't to discuss the movie itself.

Does anyone have any opinions on the product placement in movies?

Product placement in a movie does not bother me as long as it does not affect the flow of the movie. If someone is drinking a coke then I dont care. If some one is drinking a coke and holds it to make sure you can read the label then I have no use for it.

I've seen the previews, and didn't really seem interested in the movie itself.

As for the subject, I've never been influenced in one way or another by marketing within movies, but going to the lengths of what you're describing, definitely sounds a little weird. I'm definitely not a fan of the way that marketing in general is going. I hate all commercials nowadays that don't feature a product I'm interested in, and even if I'm interested in it, it gets annoying when it keeps getting shown time after time (loudly), to where I have to constantly change the channel to keep from going insane.

I don't think any product deserves that high of a level of marketing, in movies, and I could easily see how it could turn people off.

This scene immediately came to mind:

This was similar to the latter. It didn't kill the flow of the movie because the things needed to be done, but the main character used his iPhone as a flashlight, used his Apple computer to video chat with someone, used another Apple app to edit photos and record videos, and used Safari to search some earlier murders. In every case it seemed blatant and they would be sure to show some of the navigation steps. I don't know, it was just the most obvious case I've seen since the parody of it in Wayne's World (Nuprin. Little. Yellow. Different.).
