Updated: 6:16 p.m. ET April 29, 2004HAGERSTOWN, Md. - When millions of cicadas emerge across the eastern United States for a rare mating season, they will appear as tasty morsels to pets who could get sick from eating the insects, officials warned.

The insects are protein-rich but their hard outer shells can cause vomiting and constipation in cats and dogs, said Randall Lockwood, vice president for the Humane Society of the United States.

“Imagine a yard full of chicken nuggets, that’s sort of what it’s going to be like” for dogs and cats, Lockwood said Tuesday.

Millions of the large, red-eyed insects will soon emerge from the ground for a once-every-17-years mating dance lasting well into June.

Experts say the insects will climb into trees and shed their shells to reveal their wings. Males will attract mates through a loud buzzing sound.

The approximately 1˝-inch-long bugs “combine all the stuff that particularly dogs like to chase,” Lockwood said. “They’re kind of flying pet toys: They are loud, slow-moving, often low-flying.”

The Washington-based Humane Society advises keeping pets indoors, securing screens and holding tight to dog leashes outdoors.

I have been digging around my yard a lot lately and finding these things still in the ground. I have already despensed with about 30 of them. I still have a few million to go.

I know it is going to be just scary. They are estimating 1 to 1.5 million per acre  The are only a few weeks away from emerging.

My dog is going to go insane.

However the cicada is supposed to be one of the main treats on the low carb diets so just put a bunch in a basket and give to your low carb friends :silly:

Every 17 years they come. This will be your first encounter with them. They live underground for 16 years then come up and mait and then die. They don't harm anymone just annoy.

If you want to have fun with all your buddies have cicada races on the hot pavement. We would just watch them try to move and all they do is melt :)

Are you serious? SWEET!

My dad told me about when he was younger and lived in DC. This was like 34 years ago, and the things were just EVERYWHERE! That's just beyond weird, but there's no point in not making some fun out of it. :D
