Who has been the biggest dissapointment
Sidney Ponson - The O's ace on the Staff. With a record of 3-7 and a 6.47 ERA. With the Orioles giving him a $22 million contract, Ponson entered spring training 15 pounds overweight, and has shown no desire to improve upon his performance.
Mike DeJean - Brought in to become the orioles right handed stopper, dejean has been hardly that, raising questions about his major league status. Whenever he enters the game he has O's fan wondering if we can hold on to a lead that is less than 5. He has a 0-5 Record and 7.66
Kurt Ainsworth and Matt Riley - Ainsworth and Riley both had strong springs, and earned the three and four spot in the opening day rotation. Ainsworth is a pitcher who looks to locate his pitches, but in his 7 starts has walked 20 battesr, with an ERA of 9.68, prompting his demotion to Triple-A Ottowa. Riley, after a stellar against in Toronto, in which he allowed just one hit, has also been plagued by lack of command on the mound, walking 16 batters in just over 20 innings of work, on his way to 6.33 ERA, and a ticket back to Ottawa
Jay Gibbons - Been Hurt for a good part of the Season. ibbons, after knocking in 100 runs last year as the Orioles best hitter, has failed to live up to expectations this year, batting only .250 wich is lowest on the team with over 50 At Bats with 6 HR

A lot was expected from Sidney coming into this season after his stellar last season. The Orioles invested so much money in this guy, but appears to have lost interest and desire to be the same pitcher he was last year after he has become financially set.
Gibbons has been plagued by back problems all year, which forced his time on the DL. He has been able to come through in some situations, and has a pretty high RBI number. I think once he is fully healthy, we will see the Jay Gibbons of old.

Ponson. (over DeJean cause he's only signed for 1.5 million) He wants the ball, he gets the big contract, then shows up to spring training overweight.
I don't see Gibbons as a dissapointment in the least. He put up excellent numbers last year while playing hurt with a wrist injury. He's been hampered by that back injury this season, which caught up to him as he was starting to heat up at the plate. Gibby will get his by batting .275 with 25-30 dingers and 75-80 rbi.
A dissapointment not on the list is Javy Lopez. Sure, he's batting .300 but he hasn't been very clutch in hitting and furthermore is PITIFUL behind the plate. I know that he's catching a young pitching staff with control issues, but get down on those low pitches! The orioles have a tradition of excellent defensive backstops from Gus Tradios, to rick Dempsey and Chris Hoiles (till his body fell apart). block a ball in the dirt javy!

I agree about Javy but He is still batting well, and our pitching isn't helping him like you said..

Javy does a great job behind the plate blocking balls. You rarely see a ball get by him.
I would not call Javy's offensive production a disappointment at all. I know he is only hitting like .200 with runners in scoring position, but its not like .300 with 7 HR and 32 RBI is anything to be ashamed of. If you thought he was gonna come in here and hit 43 HR and hit .340 again, you were kidding yourself.

The Orioles have 29 wild pitches this year. Although they are blamed on the pitcher, it's the catchers duty to stop it. If you watch carefully you'll see that he's not technically sound in his technique.

well, i also went with Ponson.
he's our #1, got a nice contract, and hasn't even come close to earning the bucks. he needs to get kicked in the ass by clemens, or find a good mentor to help him discover what it takes to be a staff leader.
i expected a lot from gibbons but he is injured.
i didn't expect jack **** from DeJean, and he hasn't even shown that much yet!!!
Riley and Ains...... didn't expect much from Riley. Ains has also been a big dissapointment, but it's not like we gave up anything to get him....

My gym teacher is a big fan and she told me a few years back, that Ponson was asked to go to Roger Clemons workout program over the summer because Clemens thought he could be great in the MLB If you got in Playing shape. and Sid Responded "Thats not for me"
When one of the greatest pitchers tell you, that you could be great and turn it down because your lazy... Your not going anywhere in the league

I think the coaching staff struggles in so many ways.
When to pull a pitcher, having guys swing on so many 1st pitches.
I can't believe this is the team that makes Selig think there shouldn't be one in D.C.

I really hope DC Gets a team so i can root for a NL and a AL Team

Ponson. He is supposed to carry the rotation. He should be trying to prove that last year wasn't a fluke.

SAMBO, if you want to root for a NL team, you should root for the Colorado Rockies.

Why would you want to root for the Rockies?

The Rockies have high-paced offense, providing a lot of entertainment; no pitching, which helps the other teams provide a lot of entertainment: and they have the best hitter in baseball, Todd Helton.

I dunno about Helton. He has some help in the mile high air. In the past 3 seasons he has 26 more homeruns @ home alone.
Ravens&SkinsSuperBowl40
June-20th-2004, 05:32 PM
I think you are right about Helton. He is only a power hitter because he is playing at Coors Field. He can still hit for average away, but he doesn't have nearly the same power.
TheDoyler23
June-20th-2004, 05:39 PM
No doubt he's an awesome hitter.
....and you can always chip away @ a player for various reasons: Arod hit 50 homeruns a season becuase his team was always far behind. Jeter has always had a stellar lineup around him for protection, etc etc etc.

helton is a great hitter, but i think Vlad is better than him. Guerrero can hit a pitch anywhere around the plate. so he may not be the most disciplined, but he is the best hitter IMO.

There's no doubt that Vlad is a better hitter than Helton. He has had no protection all of his career until leaving the Expos and joining the Angels. Not only is he a better hitter, but he is a all-around player.

Vlad would have been loved and admired in Orange. He would be best friends with Tejada (who grew up in the same place) as well as the very latin-based team the orioles have. He balked @ playing in Baltimore becoase of their lack of a latino population, but Orioles fans have had a love affair with their high-profile players forever.

I was wondering where the O's would be right now if they had acquired:
Tejada, Pudge, Vlad (RF) and played Gibbons at 1B
instead of:
Tejada, Lopez, and Raffy...
The pitching would still suck but all three of our acquisitions might have been All-Stars.
TheDoyler23
July-13th-2004, 03:30 PM
It would have been different, no doubt. Javy lopez put up a good average in the first half, but Pudge is leading the AL. And Vlad is blowing up...
Fighting for old D.C.
July-14th-2004, 11:16 PM
Right now we're a pathetic 37-48. If we had gotten Miggy, Pudge, and Vlad, we'd be a very respectable 45-40.

First, i guess no one saw Sambo write that Ponson was 3-7, hes 3-12! Second, with vlad, pudge, miggy, and DEREK LEE(Jeff Conine for Derek Lee...Remember we declined that) we would be better. But Pitching wins championships, and we could score 12 runs per game and still be in the cellar of the East(Texas v. 2.0) Hopefully we do trade for Edwin jackson to give us a good young pitcher who is only 21 who we can build our rotation around. Hes got great numbers to go along with a high 90's fastball and solid offspeed stuff. He has never struck out less then 1 per inning(9+k/9 ip). He is just what this organization needs, but what im sure we will not get or when we do trade away for Mike Timlin(We really needed that solid RP, you know, Grimmsly).

Oldskool, you realize this question asked for the Orioles' biggest disappointment, not the Angels' biggest disappointment?
