Ok...I am new to this forum. I like to consider myself an above average person when it comes to anaylizing sports. I do not feel in any way that it is our pitchers fault that we have lost more games then we have one, we as in the orioles, and probably will continue to do so. This year the orioles were not supposed to contend. However, this year we were supposed to find out who can play and who is good enough to play next year on a team that was supposed to contend. Upper management is too blame for the Orioles struggles. They lead us to believe that we would be contending until later in the season this year, and that our pitching would be good enough to help us do that. Yet our pitchers ERA is worst in the big leagues right now. Again, it is not our pitchers fault we are now 30-41 after a demoralizing loss to the braves. The fault lies in 2 areas. First, hiring a new manager with no previous experience at managaing, at least above the minor leagues. Lee Mazilli is on too long of a leash, he has made some of the worst decisions this year that I have ever seen. He made me angry again today when, with Matt Riley pitching a great game and Mike Dejean remarkably pitching a good inning, he decided What the hell, ill let Mike pitch again. Mike Dejean has been "Holding" opponents to an average above .330. Luck went the other way in his Second inning, as any manager could see it would. Also, with J.D. Drew, and Chipper Jones coming up, what were they thinking? BJ Ryan was the best choice to come in with the lefties coming in. Yet again, Lee Mazilli used his inexperience in managing to help lose another game. The 2nd person(s) that i blame for the orioles blowing so much is Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan and all the PR staff for the orioles. They had all the fans believing that this was a new stage in Orioles history, this year could mean something, we would actually play well. Well, we have played horribly, the "pitching" staff they assembled has lost 2 opening day members of the pitching staff and should have lost a 3rd with ponson at least for a short period of time to wake him up, and our defense has just made our pitchers that much worse. The last 2 years we were above-average in the league in defense, this year we are last in the AL in fielding percentage. All of which i have discussed could be just luck, but bad decisions before more then during the season is why the Orioles are losing more often then they win.

Well, I would agree that the majority of the blame should fall on Mike Flanigan and Jim Beattie. It was their responsibility to know whether the inexperienced and unproven rotation that they put out on the field would be able to consistently give the team a chance to win. Flanigan's and Beattie's analysis of the rotation was obviously incorrect based upon its lack of success.

Upper management is too blame for the Orioles struggles. They lead us to believe that we would be contending until later in the season this year, and that our pitching would be good enough to help us do that.

So should the Orioles' front office simply say, "This is a year of rebuilding, and we don't expect to have success this year. Our sole purpose of this year is to find out what players are major league material to set ourselves for the 2005 season." That doesn't send a very good message.

Bmoreravens4life, I don't understand how it's Flanagan and Beattie's fault the O's are doing so bad just because they gave us expectations, which is what it seems you are saying.

for the Nth time in this forum:
we were never supposed to contend this season!!!

i understand Bmoreravens4life, that you posted that, but you also posted that managment opined we would contend until the end of the season... that is a contradiction.

i will find an article from BEFORE the season began that talks about Beattie and Flanny forming a team that will contend in 2-3 seasons, but we can't now because of the YOUNG PITCHING! the one thing that the front office said is that our team would come out and play hard for 9 innings, 162 times this season....

"All we want is the winning attitude, to play and compete hard, start winning and see what happens," says Mazzilli. "You never know when things get rolling. Is it tough to play 59 games with Boston, New York and Toronto? Sure, but it's up to us to make it tough on them."

i'll look for more tomorrow, but i've got to get some sleep, it's 5am! peace!
